They are my favourite fish in my nano tank they have huge characters and are like having a pet dog. Mine was super shy at first but now they come and see what I'm up too for the first half hour when my lights turn on. Great fish 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I'm really interested in this species but after doing some research I found that there are two other species that are very similar. Could you do a video on the difference between Trichopsis vittata, Trichopsis schalleri, and Trichopsis pumila? I read some reviews that vittata and shalleri are more aggressive versions. I think it would be good to know what differences to look for to make sure we get the right species in our aquariums. :)
I just got my Sparkling Gourami. Cutest little bunch ever. Full of energy and intelligence. They were shy at first now they spawn at my arrival. I feed them frozen blood worms that they love and constantly search for.
I love mine!! I have them in a 10 G planted tank with Chocolate gourami, ember tetra and chili raspboras. Wonderful fish!!!! Thanks for all you do Rach-xxoo
I finally got my 29G nano tank up & running, and a group of sparkling gouramis was one of the first fish I got for it. I love these little guys. Along with being beautiful to look at, they're not shy at all and come over to the side of the tank to see what I'm up to.
Favorite nano fish by far. They have plenty of personality. They even come up to the tank when I show up. Can be quite the aggressive with each other however. Heavy plants and hiding spaces are a must imo.
These guys are awesome. I just got one yesterday and he’s beautiful and very personable. Comes out and checks you out and Follows you around. They have bright blue eyes too. the one I got is more red and gold
Hey Racheal. Thanks for posting this. I'm on the look out for these at the moment so you've got super timing. Your channel inspired me to do a walstead nano tank. I'll post it to instagram and direct it to you when it's finished. Awesome channel as always.
Very cool fish, they really glimmer as they turn into the light from a grey into that bright blue, in person their eyes are like little gems glowing up. One of my fav fish!
Rachael, I have a 20 long and was going to make it a species tank and really liked this sparkling gourami. I've read stories of them breeding prolificly... is my 20 long going to be quickly over run by these little guys? Is there a different fish you would recommend?
These guys are lovely, very interactive fish and do well with almost any fish, got a small group in my 100 Litre with a red chin panchax and are getting on A ok, how may would you suggest in an 100 Litre aquarium? currently have a group of 4 in there :) Great videos!
I use to keep mine with cardinal tetras. They would breed on the roof of a cave all the time. Didn't have luck raising them beyond wrigglers - didn't know how in those days. I had them in the bedroom and would hear them croaking all the time. My favorite gourami!
hey, Rachel would love to see a video on top level fish, beside hatchets and killi. thought these would worker but your video has them down low. thanks

I'm so excited that my Sparkling Gourami are spawning!! So unexpected as I just got a second one last week. Eggs are under the sponge filter. I don't know if the babies will survive as I don't have another tank.
wow these are the most interesting fish to me that you've done a piece on Rachel I learn more and more watching your videos you have a fan for life I'm use to raising huge fish from fry I guess that's why small fish such as these are a wonder to me I have much respect for you and the information that you possess it's and your amazing much love Chef
I absolutely love these guys. About a year ago, I got back into fishkeeping after a long hiatus. And I have to say I think I know more now than I did in all the other years combined! But, I find that with so much more valuable information online that just wasn't available in the past, I still have a lot to learn. I've had about 6 nano tanks up and running over this past year and at one point had a sexed pair in a 2.5 gallon aquarium, great little sponge filter I love, the Caf10, and a low wattage heater. I was lucky enough that one of the gals at my LFS really knew about the finnage shape differentiating males and females. They lived happily together, spawning, and croaking away...until, I think I killed them. I would love your feedback here about my thoughts on why it happened. I think that as they are "somewhat" shy and stress easily, at least the female in my case, that during my PWCs, it was just tooo traumatic. It's just tooo tiny a tank with nowhere to really escape from the giant siphon hose demon coming at you from above. I believe my water changes caused such stress, that their immune systems were compromised. I was unfamiliar with whatever it may have been, one had a deep mustard yellowish area near their gill, in hindsight maybe a fungus? (I don't think I either treated early enough as she was hiding alot and made it difficult to view her/or possibly treated with wrong anitbiotic). They died with in a day or two of each other fairly quickly. I believe they really needed a larger tank with more room to hide away securely from the siphon.Would that be a fair assessment? I have a 5.5 gal ready to go for them when my LFS gets them in again as the last time they came in they were very young and stressed so I opted out. With a small school of Ember Tetras as companions for a pair or trio. And hiding places on each side of the aquarium this time. Can you give me any thoughts on keeping them healthy/stress free/safe/secure :) I have no real swings in water parameters in any of my nanos (thank goodness for small favors). And thanks again, if you are able to take the time to get back on any of this.
+Carla Pappalardo it's possible they aged out too. A lot of small fosh have prettybshorrnlife soans, and if you get them sexed they are well into maturity
Thanks so much for responding! Yes will have to watch for short lives; I become way too attached. Forgot to say here that I only had them about a month. I think I stressed them and the tank wasn't as mature as it could have been. I will continue to look for research on them and look for more of your videos. Thanks again!
Nice Rachel! Would they do OK with a large shoal, 10 fish, of black skirts in a 30 Long would you think? Also same # or more of white clouds? My black skirts in this number just bother one another, and even this not often.
I was planning on some neon or cardinal tetras (depending on temp range I end with based off which catfish I choose) in my future 20 gallon planted tank- which currently houses 2 RCS (ha!). Now I'm kind of considering these... very interesting!
These will probably fit whatever temp range your catfish need. As long as the tank isn't too stocked you could possibly get a group of 6 or 8 in there over time, they cover a lot of ground so even with few fish I find they fill the tank pretty well :)
Hi Rachel, I would like to do a species only tank of Sparking Gourimes. I know they need a planted tank but I just have no success with planted tanks. What do you think about using artificial plants instead?
The breeding and care requirements are almost the exact same as betta Fish, that's really cool, do you think they could be kept together give enough space? (Like a 20 long)(and only female betta of course)
Arielle Florio This is exactly what I'm wondering! Someone in the betta group just posted a video of a 12 gallon bowl with a few of these and a betta, and now I want some!
I'm setting up a heavily planted fish bowl that holds something around 10 gallons (probably would only fill to 8 gallons since we need to leave some space for them at the top). How many sparkling gouramis would it be safe to stock? I've read some people say that you wouldn't be able to have two or more males in such a small area, but other don't mention any restrictions. I had been planning on getting around four fish, but wanted to make sure they would be happy. Any help is appreciated!
Is having a female betta sorority just as bad as having 5 sparkling Gouramis ? what makes the 2 ideas different. I have 2 sparkling gouramis and I am planning on adding 3 more. The 2 sparkling gouramis are good with each other but they do the fight dance regularly but they don't nip each other's fins.
Rachel! This has become One of my favorite species of fish to keep! My tank stays around 75•F. Would you suggest putting in an Aquatop nanoheater self controlling heater that stabilizes temp at 77? This is for 6sparkling in a 6G fluval spec. Thanks!
The first time I kept them was in a small tank near my desk. I kept hearing a sound that I thought was my computer's hard drive working, until one day I realized.... it was the fish.
is there any territorial behavior that would suggest the sex of these fish? after watching this video I decided on a pair of these for a center piece to one of my nano tanks. one is definitely a male as he had some red edging to his fins. the other I picked out was much less colorful and about 1/2 to 3/4 his size. since adding to the tank last night the smaller one has claimed a piece of spider wood and will chase the larger one away. the smaller one has already developed more color but not as much blue sheen as the big one...
Those are beautiful gouramis. so they act kinda like the angel fish. That would be nice in real life for adults, the male taking over and rearing the babies, lol. @4:39 the piece on the back of the decoration, looks like a snakehead. Great video.
Sparkling gourami are not the ones that croak. It is the slightly larger species trichopsis vittata. It's a common mistake as they look very similar, there is really just a slight color difference and then the larger size. I ADORE YOUR VIDEOS. I got into the hobby a decade ago to help with my heroin addiction. I'm no longer sneaking home with bags of drugs but bags of fish :)
Ok but can I keep them with my betta? People keep saying "gourami are aggressive!" Then saying that THESE are the least aggressive. So is it possible or not? I got a 7 gallon and my betta won't even flare for a mirror. He's living peacefully with a snail.
I find them to be opportunistic and they tend to shoal with other fish. They follow my dwarf puffer all over the tank (which is heavily planted). They would snatch the bloodworms from the dwarf puffer if its not quick enough. I would say they are efficient hunters on their own and searching through the entire tank. I had one of this fish on ah 45 liter 11.8 gallon tank with 6 endler and 1 platy unfortunate after i put it in the tank and go for a walk i returned with a missing fish. I have top cover for the tank my filter has sponge on its intake until now the possibly reason is someone pest him and ate him
Hello Rachel, once again a great review. I once had 12 sparkling gouramis that were so shy that they would hide away out of sight. I put a young Male Betta in with them (just so I didn't have to stare into a seemingly empty tank) and to my surprise the gouramis came out into the open and we're much more confident!
I introduced this to my guppy & dwarf gourami community tank They r evil. They nip on & eventually killed my adolescent guppies. They are my guppy fries already 1/2 size to their parent so I think they wont be eaten anymore. I just removed this pygmy demon.
7 years later and I still get het so mich info from your videos I come back to them. Thank you.
My favorite ever. :) My house is pretty quiet, and I often hear mine clicking away from across the hall in another room.
They are my favourite fish in my nano tank they have huge characters and are like having a pet dog. Mine was super shy at first but now they come and see what I'm up too for the first half hour when my lights turn on.

I have two of these and had no clue about them. Thank you! also it was awesome meeting you at the Chicago Aquatic Experience over the weekend.

>don't do damage to adult shrimp
my sparkling gouramis hunted down and killed all my orange neocaridina
Had mine one day, one dead shrimp so far.
same
Probably depends on how many u have, 2 or 3 will probably be pretty shy. Not too sure tho don’t take my word for it lol

They look more like a wild betta.
Sean Ford they are actually really agresive toward bettas, I had a collony and they almost killed my plakat betta.
They are in the labyrinth family so it does make sense
yes as like betta vitata
Sean Ford they are a close relative. Compare their behavior, physiology, and appearance to wild bettas, nearly identical to juvenile female bettas
hey, Rachel would love to see a video on top level fish, beside hatchets and killi. thought these would worker but your video has them down low. thanks

love the vid! keep it up Rachel!
Will a croaking guorami eat my guppy fry ? Kind of want them for that purpose
I know it’s been two years, but no, they will not
That is so cool indeed I know clown loaches click but this is just awesome thanks for sharing Rachel 🤗🤗
Love these lil fish. I like to keep them in my soft water community tanks. I have bred them but never heard them, that's wild!
it is a very subtle sound, similar to ADF, more like a background cricket sound.....LOL
Whats ADF stand for? Lol dang crickets! I will have to put my ear up to the tank next time I try to breed some if i ever do again lol.
+L.R.Bretz's Aquatics African dwarf frog
Thanks learn something new everyday :)

Hey Rachrl, what light are you using in this video? it really highlights their bright blue color!
+Ruthlyss Targaryen it's an led of some sort
Will these be ok with black neon and cardinal tetras? And will one or a pair be ok?
Hi there ! Can I keep one alone in a nano tank, or would it be too lonely and sad?
They are fine alone
Can these be with harlequin rasboras?
Do you think it's okay to keep them with chili rasboras? Aqadvisor gives me a warning that they may not be compatible :) ?
i think theyw ould work quite well
Since they like low to no flow, do you think they're unsuitable for a Spec V? The pump on that can get fairly strong.
+Anthony Ragan it's easy to divert that flow to bounce off the glass so the tank has quiet areas sp it would be fine
Thanks. I never see these in the stores, but I think a small colony in a planted Spec V would be lovely.
Any idea if the males get territorial with the females? I'm wondering if I just have two males.
can we get a species spotlight of khuli loaches or pangio loaches PLLLLLZZZZZZZ
+Sea Goo at some point. Mt secret shame is they give me the total heebie jeebies so I rarely keep them.
I really dislike snakes, worms etc but khulis are my favorite fish, have been for years!
+Theresa M I have some in a 75g. Will have to pull them to do a spotlight. I will put it on my to do list
Oh yes please
Can they be kept with a peaceful fish but two times their size? pls respond
does raising the temperature make them what to spawn
What about Neon tetra?
Will they eat fruit flies or are they too big?
they probably would
Rachel will they attack and eat cherry shrimp?
absolutely will eat the babies
@@RachelOLeary :(
Awww I miss my sparkling gorami, sickness got mine to quickly ;-;
aw, bummer :(

Can they be housed alone? Or do they need to be with other fish?
+Misty Lau they are great with other small fish
I'm assuming they wouldn't do well in an Iwagumi style Aquascape, would they?
+Misty Lau they might depending on how you have the filtration discharge set up
Okay, thank you. Calm waters for them.
Are they okay with dwarf gouramis and Guppies?
The Gymnastics Kid not with dwarf gourami. Guppies perhaps, but guppies require hard water and sparklers are softwater.
wow great fish there on your video
non schoolers? is there a minimum recommended number?
nope!
Sparkling gourami are not the ones that croak. It is the slightly larger species trichopsis vittata.
It's a common mistake as they look very similar, there is really just a slight color difference and then the larger size.

omigosh they're awesome
I cant seem to find them anywhere
G-Chi Gaming I'm trying to find some too have you had any luck?
Ohhh-maaan!! These guys are Sooooo cooooool!! I am fallin' hard and fast!! 😍
Do they get iridovirus?
+DMAN D no, they are generally not susceptible
Rachel O'leary That is good.I had a Dg and he got it,it was very sad.
Do they like being in schools or just a pair?
Can be a pair, if you want a school keep few males and lots of females.
Noé?
I got four and they love to search for food together and investigate.
So if I don't intend to breed them I don't need a lid.
Doragon
Take it from me, unless you have total vegetation covering the top you want a lid. I lost a shelldweller that should never jump out to no lid
I find them to be opportunistic and they tend to shoal with other fish. They follow my dwarf puffer all over the tank (which is heavily planted). They would snatch the bloodworms from the dwarf puffer if its not quick enough.

The Gouram's that I had; made a sound that could be described as a computer disk skipping.
They do make funny sound- like croaking skipping computer disks.you had either sparkling gouramii or pygmy gouramii
They are cute fish for small aquara.
Their eyes remind me of dwarf pea pufferfish

Very informative
khuli loaches for spotlight please :D

Hello Rachel, once again a great review. I once had 12 sparkling gouramis that were so shy that they would hide away out of sight. I put a young Male Betta in with them (just so I didn't have to stare into a seemingly empty tank) and to my surprise the gouramis came out into the open and we're much more confident!

想問如何分公母 感恩~
Maximum amount in a 24 planted aquarium?
So they're kinda like betas? They're gonna be my next fish!
They look just like Bettas. I heard they are bloody aggressive.
I just order 3 of these to go in my 7 gallon tank! Super excited.
Can I ask, how many in a 240 ltr aquarium to keep them happy? ( with other community micro fish...?)
They seem a lot like bettas in their breeding behaviors. I wonder if they would get along with a male better.
I used to have them together and they almost killed my betta
they are relatives with betta then many caracteristical beta behavior are common with them gouramis is love
👍🙋🏼♀️🇩🇪❣
😎
I introduced this to my guppy & dwarf gourami community tank They r evil. They nip on & eventually killed my adolescent guppies. They are my guppy fries already 1/2 size to their parent so I think they wont be eaten anymore. I just removed this pygmy demon.
