  • In Korea, your responsibility to your dead family member extents past the funeral. You're called to offer memorial rituals (제사 Jesa) on several occasions a year, which have inevitably taken on more spiritual aspect, that the souls of the dead are present at the rituals.

    I had a dream like that as a preteen when I lived inside my paternal grandpa's old house. In my dream, my grandpa asked me to get him his favorite fruit pound cake. After I woke up, I told the adults of the family that grandpa was asking for fruit cakes, then we realized we missed his 90th birthday. When I moved to live with my maternal grandma, I never had dreams like that again.

    Well wow that’s a lot of ritual…. Actually that’s a lot of work 😅 good to know and remember but I’m actually glad not to have to do that 😬. That’s cool that everyone shares the food after though.

      It does provide an occasion for family to gather and bond... but it is a lot of work, especially expected of the women in the family to prepare all the food...

      @@talesfromkorea5179 Yes! I heard that on the Korean Pizza Club channel 😅! I agree - that’s a LOT of work - Korean food seems really time-intensive
