34 years ago today was a damn fine evening at MSG. We knew then that everything was going to be alright. One of the funnest, well played shows of the year....that setlist! The Jack opener pretty much exploded the arena into 50 thousand pieces. H>S>F to end the 1st (20 minute Franklins!) A near perfect 2nd set Playin, UJB and Let it Grow all in pre-drums!? Bananas I tells ya.
Steve is a treasure, man i could listen to him tell stories all the time. Being a GD fan I love to hear about their lives and what went on backstage and on the road. I would love to know more about Brent even if his life was dull or boring which I doubt, I want to hear everything about everything, good bad or ugly. I just really enjoy it. What a time to be alive back then.
Cool story man. I always wondered why the Blues Bros were at Winterland. Congratulations on your flowers, they look amazing. Always glad to see your videos pop up. Peace and love to you my friend
Hi Big Steve. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. We use to love SNL.. I just had turned 14 y/o and remember watching 11/11/78 on SNL and getting very excited about it because I had a ticket for my first show in Boston on 11/14/78....A few weeks earlier we went to Ticketron for Styx tickets, they were sold out so the Ticketron lady said "I have four ticket left for the Grateful Dead" My brother and I were not sure about it but said OK...The rest is history .. That night at Boston Music Hall changed our lives forever..Thanks for your insight now and all your work over all the years.......... (Steve from NH)
Thanks, Steve! I sure do remember those days and SNL. I'm going to get me some of that pain cream. Still have the Grizzly Peak t-shirts? Margaret Mumm Moore
@@BigStevesBackstagePass I was too young for the scene, so it's not only interesting hearing your 1st hand accounts, it helps me to better understand what it really may have been like.
What a pisser! That the SNL cast threw an undercover wink at you and the band, breaking your shoes like that, keep the stories alive in the dead way, fantastic!
Language of the stage get out of my face. God bless you Steve, you and your long Pole with a hook on the end of it like in Looney Toons🐰🥕😆What's up doc?
Just got a copy of a book about the Blues Brothers from library. It came out in 2024. Grateful Dead is mentioned on page 187, the Nov 11, 1978 episode; Akroyd and Belushi opened a speakeasy called Blue Bar. It was private party to blow off steam after SNL aired. That night Frances Ford Coppola and Keith Richards were the bartenders. “The Grateful Dead raised glasses with the cast.”
Hey Now, Steve!! This is great - Thanks! I know that there has always been a lotta chatter on GD @ NYC so whatcha got on CHICAGO? Maybe not as many storied venues but there has to be some good stuff you can share thereabouts?
Great video, but Steve - Cropper and Dunn weren't Mowtown, they were Stax in Memphis and later Muscle Shoals. They were part of Booker T. and the MGs, the studio band at Stax.
The relevant question around this is: How do you watch the video of the SNL show performances, especially the 78' show? They are not available anywhere I can see. Peacock doesn't show them on the SNL shows.

Just found the SNL backstage door episode. Your Name is Not on the List Steve!!!
I remember Stone Mountain
Cropper and Dunn were the "MG's" of "Booker T and the MG's"
Saw them backing Neil Young back in like 93 and it was fantastic show. The old boys put on a clinic that night.
I met Peter Sheridan in the early 1970s. Yes , he was one crazy MF.
JULES, chain curtain and Ben Kingsley 2023 a must-watch too cute 🛸👽🪴🍃🏡🤔🫒🕊️👯🥸+👽=🥰

So glad you shared this! I’ll always remember the skit when John Belushi used your name.

I loved the early SNL shows. They always had good musical guests.
And great (politically incorrect) bits.
Can't say the same for it now though...

big Steve used to send me out into the audience to give cute girls backstage passes. so the name of this podcast is funny to me.

Paul Simon’s mom was your 3rd grade teacher ? That’s cool
Quarter,yeah,is 13 grams fair
No mention of Jerry's Kids sketch?
Can I suggest you add the links to the footage in the description text ; ).
Good suggestion Scott. Will do when we can.
Did Jerry write West LA about Belushi?
☺🙂🤪
Damn I thought this might have the actual footage. I don't think Lorne will ever release it, dude's like Don Henley and Prince.
