The Glass Harp, also known as "musical glasses", is a musical instrument invented in 1741 by Irishman Richard Pockrich.
It consists in a set of stemware glasses tuned by adding a precise amount of water and played by rubbing moistened fingers around the rims.
Wine glass music has evolved ever since, specially with the invention of the glass harmonica (armonica) by Benjamin Franklin.
Robert Tiso is one of the few glass players presently performing. The magical and mesmerizing sound of his wine glass instrument has been appreciated and acclaimed world wide in many different kind of events, shows and festivals.

    About this video:
The first voice is the cello part (bottom right),
Clockwise there is 1st 2nd and 3rd violin.
the original cello track was lowered 1 octave to reach the low notes. I also added a few orchestra strings to round up the sharp sound of the glasses
This is one of the greatest hits in the classical world which was composed in the 1680's by Johann Pachelbel.
Pachelbel's Canon, also known as Canon in D major (PWC 37, T. 337, PC 358), is the most famous piece of music by German Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel. It was originally scored for three violins and basso continuo and paired with a gigue in the same key. Like most other works by Pachelbel and other pre-1700 composers, the Canon remained forgotten for centuries and was rediscovered only in the 20th century. Several decades after it was first published in 1919, the piece became extremely popular, and today it is frequently played at weddings and included on classical music compilations, along with other famous Baroque pieces such as Air on the G String by Johann Sebastian Bach.

I saw my first glass "harmonica" at the historical society on a school field trip. Came home after school and emptied the cabinets of crystal, covering the table (that I'd unceremoniously cleared of its mounded chaos). I managed to get 3 octaves by also digging out my grandma's crystal from the attic and was coaxing Greensleeves when my mother came home, saw the stack of papers in the corner and flew into a panic.
Maybe, now that I'm someplace in life a little less prone to the constancy of moving vans, I might keep an eye out for old sets of real crystal. In Ayurveda, there is special relavance in healing from music created without striking notes. In playing with that concept, I stopped the painful "muscle memory" replayng 6 weeks worth of grinder/sander/dremmel vibrations that were bringing back arthritis & fibromyalgia pain I thought I'd conquered. Deep, rich, resonant tones a balm for high speed drill motors and looming deadlines. Delicate higher pitches the cancel for residual ringing ears. I was using, at the time, the display of beyond my price range hanging chimes at the hardware store, but now I wonder if a crystal punch bowl would work?

Impressive performance on a difficult to manage instrument, yes. A nice choice of song to showcase the instrument, yes. But the glass harp is too harsh for the most beautiful rendition of the song. I believe that honor is more closely approached by the London Symphony Orchestra. Posted by schmobot, I believe.

"To call this impressive is an understatement big enough to fly a 747 though. I am in awe of such an intricate, masterful performance. I have heard Pachelbel's Cannon done in many ways, but this, hands down is one of the most beautiful."
And **that** is an understatement big enough to sail the Kennedy, Nimitz, and the Eisenhower through, side-by-side!
My first introduction to the Cannon in D was back in 1975 when I heard it on a promo album by the Musical Heritage Society. I was awestruck! It was ethereal, music for the gods, impressive beyond belief. If I could have made an endless-loop of it, I would have.
Since then I have been trying to find a copy of Pachelbel's Cannon that measured up to the breathtaking intensity of that first recording. I listened to every arrangement I could find, from the London Symphony Orchestra to pan-pipes. Though all were very good, nothing matched the sheer "Oh My Gosh!" of that original recording.
    Until now.
Robert Tiso's arrangement of the Cannon in D left me jaw-droppingly speechless. The arrangement is superb, the execution flawless, (despite what the nay-sayers may think). As Ogg9 said, it's truly an "eargasm".
Mr. Tiso, my hat's off to you. You have set a new standard for all future performances to be measured against.
I wish you every success, and may all your recordings be as well done.

I wish my keyboard had a glass harp voice. It's a Kurzweil and about 25 years old, but it still sounds great and has 100 voices - strings, clarinet, choir, etc. If they don't make keyboards with glass harp voices by now, they should - and they should get Robert Tiso to record all the notes for them! I think I can buy some gadget to add more voices if I want. If I can get one that lets me add the glass harp, it would definitely be worth it.

Then I went back up and read the description. No organ, but there was some extra "tweaking." It's just wonderful the stuff that can be done today when you mix a little technology with live music. Delosombres1, you must not be a musician as this is real as can be. It appears that this gentleman dubbed this with four "voices" and it absolutely beautiful. As a musician, this is one of the most beautiful yet easy pieces to play. I have played on flute and piano and also dubbed over to make my own "two voices". And one more thing, I just can't stand a nay-sayer as yourself. This is THE most unique version that I have heard of this piece and I have heard thousands. God Speed to the true musicans amongst. Perhaps we will meet one day. Cheers!

I hate when I see these kinds of videos; part of me is in awe and part of me feels like shit because I don't have any talent like that :/

To get a talent like that you have to work for it so if you really want to do that just practice and work at it.

Just wait because when I was 10 I didn't know that I could play piano and violin it took 5 years to notice that. Don't force yourself to find out you'll know when. 😏

it actually took less than 10 second to make a sound. just need to have a thin wine glass, pot your index finger in water, then loop your hand at the top of the wine glass.
