There could have been so much more.
RIP Poly.🌹
Non recyclable. 1 of a kind
You are a true artist, way ahead of your time & very influential to other musicians trying to create their sound. I hope you are dancing with the angels & shaking them up a bit! RIP Poly Styrene!
What lousey timeing, Poly. I wish you would have stuck around a bit longer. At least long enough to enjoy the positive reaction to this new album. And maybe played a few gigs too. Much love to your eternal spirit.
40 years ago today Germfree Adolescents was released. Still thinking about and listening to this much-missed woman :(
Cheered me up enormously to see her so happy (more beautiful than ever:-)) and enjoying her work. Still can't believe she's gone. RIP Poly.
I almost cried when I listened to this album. It was so beautiful and they'll never be anyone else like her again. R.I.P Poly Styrene. Thank You for the wonderful music.
Always ahead of her time, starting from the 70’s Unbelievable woman, intelligent, beautiful, iconic
What a beautiful woman
The new documentary is brilliant!!!
I love her bravery and I bought her documentary, she will live on forever. Peace love and respect to her friends and family
What a swan song this album is; total brilliance. Polly was one of the most under rated singers and songwriters ever. RIP
...Its so sad that she left so early... Back in 1978 We used to Play The World Turned DayGlo over and over... We really loved her... It was great to see her back and looking so good... I was floored when she passed... Hug to you Poly wherever you are...
The first Black woman of punk rock. Incredible!!! Rest peacefully.
I don't really see what her skin tone has to do with it. There have been many performers goin back to the earliest years of the twentieth century who were women and whose tone of skin may have been considered different. Billy Holiday, Eartha Kitt, Diana Ross, Jean Terrell, Mary Wilson, all of the Ronettes. In the UK alone we have Shirley Bassey, Cleo Laine, Joan Armatrading, Janet Kay, Pauline Black, Sade, Mel and Kim... indeed, the greatest level of diversity has always been found in music. Talent will always stand loud n' proud.
@@KebabMusicLtd what about the amazing Grace Jones
Such a bizarre comment. Why are you talking about her skin colour? Are you a racist or something?
@@JohnSmith-su3ze...Jesus Christ.. no ones racist here... Its fucking obvious... the o.p comment was just stating a fact.. She was the first and most well known woman of colour in punk rock. Thats just a fact. Clearly stated as a positive fact.
Same as Death from Detroit was the first all African American proto punk band, Pure Hell , first all black American punk rock band before Bad Brains. Who were the first all African American hardcore punk band.
Just facts. Nothing derogatory or racist about stating those facts .
If you watch Polystyrene: I am a cliche documentary, she wrote poetry and lyrics about being half caste , or black. Again just the facts. Being a woman of colour, or half caste was just her life experience and she wrote about it, and how that affected her in British society or where ever. Factual observation, about herself and her life , as opposed to racist slurs... you see the difference yeah.?
Bought the cd a couple of days ago and this is the best album of 2011, so far, in my opinion. This actually has shades of x ray specs, with the saxaphone in several songs. brilliant
So looking forward to this album -- and I do mean actually buying it, holding it my hands, reading the lyric sheet. I came up in the 70's and 80's wave of punk, reggae, no-wave, noise, post-punk and all the other great "revolutionary" stuff that was coming out back then. For a mixed girl like me from Chicago, Poly was more than an inspiration in the 70's. She inspired me to sew my own punk clothes and question the pop culture around me and be a proud woman of color. Stay strong Poly! x0x0x
We Rocked Against Racism together X-Ray Spex Victoria Park 1978 ..Beautifull Soul You made a Difference .taken far too soon ❤️ RIP
You are not gone Poly. Not as long as I am here. After me...you will still be here, you stamped your place in historical music.
A one in a hundred, million trillion. I love this woman. A total one off. Blew me away forever. ❤️❤️
So chronically tragic and immediate that she died not long after the interview. Always such an iconic person. Her vocals and tremendous lyrics in the viaduct of lost anarchy, yet she gave so much more than just beautiful angst, but a sense of real belonging to what was and still is an unsettled generation.
A great loss and a lovely person she definitely made her mark and created something with depth and also something that will last. Absolutely gutted to hear of her passing and my thoughts are with her daughter and family! R.I.P Poly
She was so beautiful! And, a poet and TRUE individual!
What a mark she made on music and what a woman. You may have gone but but you will be with us forever xxxx
What a loss. SO under rated and this album is truly amazing.R.I.P.
Lovely lady. Brilliant and talented.
My 1st punk record was 'Oh bondage'.I hope I've still got it somewhere. I'll never sell it now.
Fucking underrated legend!!!!
it was refreshing as a teenager to have a mixed race female in punk!!!!
An idol and an inspiration not just for women for men too generations through and through i still listen to identity now in 2011
A wonderfully talented women. Sadly missed.
we so miss you Poly!
great voice
POLY STYRENE! I loved ‘ Germ-Free Adolescents’, the X-ray Spex singles, loved how she did ‘Translucence’ after that and ‘Gods and Godesses’. Weird how she came back with ‘Conscious consumer’ with Laura. Never heard ‘Paper aeroplanes’! I hope ‘G&G’ and ‘PA’ will get a re-release someday, when the documentary is done (is it on the way now?). People often talk about Bowie’s last album, when he was dying, but ‘Generation Indigo’ is even more special, as Poly hadn’t done music in so many years. She’s such a beautiful and gentle woman here, such sense of style! It’s unbelievably sad that this is a mere month, or a few, before she passed away. She did good to make this great pop record. We should take solace that she had this ‘pleasurable experience’,
with her daughter around her, before she burnt out. She’s still the greatest …
a lovely lady,sadly missed.RIP Poly.
Rest In Peace, my sweet God-Sister, Maharani,!
Marianne Elliott-Said, or Maharani, aka Poly Styrene, was a sweet Soul, whose Friendship I am still missing, as she loved my Music and was always supportive and affectionate to me, both as a spiritual Being, and as an Artist...
She and I knew each other well, since we first met in Soho Street, and soon after, we each received Initiation from the same Spiritual Master, Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja...
Sadly, one day when she had been run over by a Fire Truck, I visited her in Hospital, where I gifted her one of my sold-out Albums, with Ambient Meditation Music...
One fine Day, she came by, when I was working in Sound Disc Studio, North London, remixing my Songs with the kind help of another dear old Friend, and former Sound Engineer of The Clash, Michael Abbott, working as my Co-Producer.
I was pleasantly surprised that she came to pay us a Visit, as I had asked her to sing on one of my Songs, which unfortunately never happened...
Of course, as this Studio was run by another couple of old Friends, Pete Bullick and his Partner, Debbie Bonham (Sister of the late and great Led Zeppelin-Drummer, John Bonham) we all got on great; especially as we had each played a vital Part in the Formation of the early Punk Movement.
We had expressed our dismay about modern Society's mad Materialism, before Punk got commercialized, and sold-out on King's Road, which I had personally witnessed, back in 1982, when I first flew to London, coming from Copenhagen, where I was also known as a Punk Rock Star...
R.I.P. Maharani! I love you dearly!
Thank you so much for sharing this story
Making it all about YOU !!Narcissistic MUCH !!!
I've read some bollocks in my time but this really takes the biscuit
"Gifted her one of my sold out albums." You mean you sold them out of the back of a van??????
You were a founding father of the early punk movement but didn't land in London until 1982??????????
Deborah Bonham didn't start recording until 1985 and nothing she did was anything like punk.
We call people like you 'Chancers.'
She seemed like a really lovely genuine person. so sad that she died so young.
RIP. YOU WERE A REALLY AMAZING WOMEN.
Poly Styrene was beautiful.
Poly, how wonderful to see some music from you and it sounds great too. You are still as beautiful as ever. I would never have had a proper youth without you. You really are a fantastic lyricist and your music has stood the test of time. I humbly thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am in Sydney. Hopefully one day you could tour here. Much lifelong love to you Dawn xxx

Prophetic to say the least!
Brilliant right up to the end. Buying it on iTunes now.
@OriginalPinkbird She's fighting cancer, laboured probably is a huge understatement about just how hard she's fighting.

God I loved her
@GreenShark4 I second that my friend.
R.I.P. In Respect.
She has major Somali features and I love her hair
Her and Iman. Both gorgeous.
RIP - Poly (Marianne Joan Elliott-Said)
Stunning🌟, beautiful🌟, I have been called an indigo child twice, which is wierd (I have had strange things happen and still do) and I think she's 1😂. Hope your shining bright you revolutionist (it shouldn't have to be a revolution if its already in us) . 🌠⭐🌟🤟✌️😇😈👽. Its funny how certain icons die of cancer (in know its everywhere but) when they look for spiritual guidance or enlighten themselfs like Bob marley, poly styrene, Adam "mca" yauch (beastie boy), because my instinct tells me you have to set yourself on fire🔥 (not literally🙄🤣), like it's inside, but knowledge up and wise up on the way. Don't be so narrow minded, we all want to be free.
Gutted, it just isnt right, so unique and with such outer and inner beauty
@denTaTa Oh. Thank you. I hope she beats it. :(
Poly Styrene was half Somali. R.I.P
She was a great lady, who was trying to tell the world, that we are falling into a pit of dis-repair. I believe her, her daughter believes her, so why don't you?
Hare Krishna dear devotee...may he be waiting for you
rip from the US
"Ghoulish" sounded a lot like "I'm in Love with a German Film Star" to me.
@angelinatiger Oh god yeah,Ronald Reagan,Bob Hope,Thatcher,the list is endless.So many involved in punk died young;Sid,Nancy,Darby Crash,Ari Up,John McGeoch,Ramones,Jeffrey Lee Pierce,Lux Interior,most well under 50.
Probably around 2011 this.....
lady source!111
I'm so sad, I didn't know she died. :(
glad i when to last xray spex gig
=( sad she had to leave too soon! may she rest with the angels! What an amazing singer and woman...
She believed in AGW, oh well no-one's perfect. She could even have been right, but I highly doubt it.
Is Poly asthmatic or smoke? She sounds a bit labored in her breathing. :(
)o:RIP:o(
She has such somali eyes. RIP from somaliland.
Personally, I've never truly liked Poly's vocals, however, these songs sound so awesome! She's definitely a legend! And I admire her songwriting.
I thought she was going to make fun of Michael Jackson for a second and was getting ready to feel dissapointed....glad that the song ended up being about something else
HARE KRSNA !
Women invented punk rock
I'm not trying to disrespect her or anything, but did anyone else notice that she was grinding her teeth and fidgeting like she was on some shit?
she was on psychotropic meds I believe
I believe its called cancer. Or the big C if you want to be eloquent about it.
i was told you had died . but my fri
...at least she WON'T get to make another one of these silly albums...i'm tryin' hard NOT to sell off my spex lp after seeing this...sheez loo-weeze!
Fuck off.
what a fucked up mindset .
@jaymusseato
You're demented. If you weren't so damn stupid, you'd be fucking evil.
What an evil person you are, Jay. You're a good advertisement for contraception.
Can't please all, but you may appreciate Ghoulish
Her solo stuff was boring.
hahahaha... Oh Larz. I just listened to one of your videos, and I can honestly say that I laughed my arse off.
