    Your videos are awesome! I always wanted to get into photography but was overwhelmed by all the jargon. Thanks to your videos, I finally bought myself a Nikon D3400 and loving it so far. Please continue the fantastic work you are doing.
    Here are a few video requests -
    1. A deeper overview of the features of the Nikon D3400 (there are so many buttons, no idea what many of them do)
    2. Tips for packing camera gear and traveling with a camera
    3. Explanation of the different types of lenses and when to use which
    4. Tutorial for taking good videos

    Hi, as an extra tip:
    I use a rice filled small bag, made of an old pair of jeans, about 6 x 6 inch to stabilize my camera's against trees, cars, poles and what not. Makes for a good stabil platform and sets the camera in every imaginable angle without the risk of scratches and wear.
    Have done so for years and will not go out with my camera's without it. Even sometimes replaces my tripod on trips!

In short, since you can only upload videos to Instagram via smartphones, this creates a nice challenge. • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 лет назад

  • @Nareimooncatt
    @Nareimooncatt 4 года назад +1

    Something often over-emphasized by manufacturers is overall height. That is typically listed with the neck fully extended. On the dirt cheap tripods, they become extremely wobbly with the neck fully extended. I have done successful long exposure work on one similar to that Velbon, but only with the neck all the way down.
    That also means what you thought was a tall enough tripod is actually too short. I prefer to have a longer set of legs and a retracted neck for better stability. On higher end tripods, the necks may be well supported. For entry level, it's not likely.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the post/feedback:). You make a good point regarding the height. I do not mind the height much as I am okay to lean over slightly, etc. Nonetheless, having a sturdy tripod is important especially on a windy shoot. Cheaper tripods are typically made of less material and will work fine under most conditions. The more expensive are typically sturdier and have more material, etc.

    I love how I've been browsing amazon for tripods for a couple of weeks now...and have pretty much narrowed it down to Zomei and Dolica...and then you came out with this video. Thank you.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 лет назад

      Thanks for the post/feedback - GREAT timing!:) Both tripods are solid. If you are interested in a monopod, consider the Zomei. If not, consider the Dolica (will also save some money):).

    A very nice and feature rich tripod is the Mactrem CT62. Aluminum, about 3 lbs., and about $75. It has little lever locking, instead of twisting means, to lock the leg section lengths which I think is a superior, and faster, method. It even has the nice little feature (that you probably would never know if somebody didn't tell you) of the stud that the head mounts to being easily reversible. It has a 3/8-16 for the head provided. But you can reverse the stud and it is 1/4-20 on the other end. They seem to have stopped providing the plastic clip with an Allen key wrench snapped onto a tripod leg and now give you three different size Allen key wrenches just in a little plastic bag. The center column is reversable so you can mount the camera low between the legs. One leg comes off easily to be a monopod. And you can even put the center column on it to make an even taller monopod. It has a large "Tilt" knob and smaller "lock" knob for the ball head which allows you to keep the larger knob set for little drag without having to lose your setting since you can lock with the other knob. For an affordable tripod that is quite sturdy yet light, this one may be at the "sweet spot" in the marketplace.

    I like my L brackets and Arca Swiss plates on a ballhead, especially for landscapes, you can change orientation without losing your composition. They also allow me to use my lens foot with longer lenses, though I use a gimbal head with my largest. I still use the Manfrotto plate on my three way pan and tilt head with my Bronica, but I very rarely change my orientation with it and I've never seen a L bracket to fit it. I don’t physically carry my tripods so aluminium is more than fine for me, but that was all we had at one time and I've recently retired my 30 year old Manfrotto because I can’t find a part for it. I’ve heard the vibration arguments before, but in the 40 years plus since I got my first SLR I've never once experienced a shot being ruined by vibration when my camera has been on a tripod. I totally agree about not having to go over the top spending silly money on tripods, some are going on for a £1000 with the head. I think some people buy Gitzo as a status symbol as they add nothing to their photography. Think about what you want it for before buying any pod, if, like me you’re putting about 15lb on one, then but one that can take 20lb plus. If you are only using one indoors or when there is no wind at all with a small camera buy accordingly. A quick tip with the weight hook, in strong winds it can be counter productive putting a bag straight on to it because if the wind catches the bag it can cause more movement not less. If you use a bungee rope that’s just long enough to start lifting the bag by a couple of millimetres so the rope is strained but the main weight is still on the ground your pod will be held firm but there’s only the width of a taught rope to be caught in the wind. Another brilliant video with your well thought out common sense, someone recently taking up photography can’t go wrong watching your videos.

    Appreciate this. I have watched numerous RUclips videos about choosing a tripod. They often advocate buying expensive tripods/monopods that cater to the serious enthusiast or professional. Thank you for this perspective. Many of us are hobbyists unable to pay the exorbitant prices for professional gear. My sense is that there is a lot of best-bang-for-the-buck photo gear available that does a reasonable job while keeping the cost down. Nice that you offer some great suggestions here. Will be keeping an eye out for your reviews.

      Thanks for the post/feedback Steve and glad to be of help!:) You are correct - there is a good amount of solid gear at an affordable price. I grabbed a Zomei Q666 I believe it was. Pretty decent piece of equipment. I do get a bit tired of the twist to lock legs taking so long but I like the piece of mind I get tightening up the legs and not worrying about the lock style legs breaking then having a leg that moves up and down. Some reported liquid leaking out of the ball on the Q666 and so far mine has not. And as always, I am loving having my Joby around and ready to go at any time. handy piece of equipment to have.

    Your advise on the tripods was very simple and focused. Thank you. I have the same Velbon and the Joby. I lost the tripod plate but got the exact replacement from E Bay. Ill stick to your advise to keep the plate removed from the camera and back on to the tripod after use.
    The only addition I can suggest is that when I used a heavy lens, like a 400, the Velbon legs started sliding through the locks. And that once the centre shaft is raised, it can be locked. The joby needs an Allen Key to tighten the head which is somewhat bothersome if you do not carry the correct sized one with you all the time.
    I will be going through your other videos. Thank you again. You sounded very friendly.

      Thanks for the post/feedback Hemantha:). I agree with you assessment on the Joby as well ... my other tripods sometime need tightening with an allen wrench:). Thank you for the info. I just bought a Nikon D3400 kit with a tripod. The tripod is nice but was looking for something more sturdier to take pictures of my paintings. I was rejected from a major art show last year due to poor quality photos so I'm not sparing any room for mistakes this year. Thanks again for your videos.

    This video is very helpful. I've been browsing Amazon intending to buy Nikon D3400. I could not make up my mind because of the variations in the bundle. So I decided to look at the possibility of buying the camera with extra one lense and build my own bundle. Can't make up my mind about the tripod. Inclined to buy the best seller. hahaha. So glad I found this video. Thank you very much.

    If you use a DSLR on a tripod don't forget to lock up the mirror, to avoid vibrations, further more avoid shutter speeds between 1/2 - 1/60 second give or take as you may end up with vibrations from the shutter mechanism. If your camera has electronic shutter use that instead of the mechanical shutter mechanism (that last thing applies to all camera types, not just DSLRs). Always use a remote trigger or a selftimer at least 10s to trigger your camera. Stand still while the exposure lasts
    Read the manual for your camera and lens. Some vibration reduction system should be turned off for best result when used on a tripod.
    Some more advice for tripods: select one with as few leg segments as possible, in tripods with many leg sections the outermost section have a tendency to be too thin, making the tripod less stable. If you plan to use it in cold wether prefer twist locks as snaplocks may break at low temperatures. Keep it simple avoid kranks, they are just one more thing that can break and are often more prone to vibration. When you buy a tripod check that the head doesn't reposition itself when you fasten it.
    Don't get a tripod that is too light if you plan to use it outdoors. The longer telephoto lens you plan to use the more sturdy and heavy your tripod need to be. A good rule of thum is that it should weigh at least as much as your camera and lens then add 1kg for each 100mm (35mm equivalent) focal length. To make your tripod heavier some tripods have hook where you can hang a camera bag or a bag of stones to make more steady.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the post/tips Uno!:) It becomes a trade off when people want to carry less weight but want a sturdy tripod:).

    I recently got into DSLRs, that too with a d3400. It's great having discovered you. I just have one question: are mobile photo editing applications any good? I saw Adobe Photoshop expression supports raw, but I'm not sure it really leverages the information in the raw picture. Then again, I'm no expert, so I would appreciate your opinion. And I can't afford Lightroom 😅

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 лет назад +3

      Thanks for the post/question!:) I rarely conduct any detailed edits on a mobile device as I prefer a larger screen (laptop or desktop). Nonetheless, I have used Photoshop over the years and only use it when I need to get really into the weeds (meaning really detailed). I find that Lightroom has a good workflow and satisfies a majority of my needs. I have used a few free alternatives such as Rawtherapee and plan to research a few more. I typically recommend looking for an old standalone version of Lightroom which is what I have (version 5.7). The older versions are great in my opinion and work well:).

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 лет назад

      Thanks for the post/feedback Tyler and glad to be of help!:) The first item I would consider purchasing would be the fixed 50 ( ruclips.net/video/e2TZVu7yZig/видео.html ) or fixed 35 ( ruclips.net/video/BG0eZZaMmYE/видео.html ). Both are great and if given the choice, I would lean towards the fixed 50 as I like a bit more reach ( amzn.to/2kD7EkF ). I would also consider a generic wireless remote ( amzn.to/2tnfbJP ). The wireless remote is great for night shots, bulb mode, etc. Speaking of night shots, I would next consider a tripod (check the description of this video for a link to some good/affordable tripods). I also like a good flash and trigger but try to go natural whenever possible. If looking for a flash, check out my video here - ruclips.net/video/DvpsqFGAG00/видео.html ... lots of fun:). If I had to rank order, I might go with the following: fixed 50, tripod, flash/trigger, and wireless remote. Hope this helps!:)

    • @monkeykong3034
      @monkeykong3034 6 лет назад

      I don’t mean to be rude (this comment came out out rudely and I just want to apologize) it’s just that you need tripods for long exposure shots and stuff but I feel that if you’re just a stills photographer you would usually just raise the shutter speed.

    my problem is I'm 6'3" and I shoot wildlife video with long lenses. I need at least 1650mm to eyeheight if the subject is level with me.. more if it's higher. If I'm standing for hours waiting for something interesting I don't want to crouch. Suggestions?

      Hi Edwin and thanks for the post/question:). 6'3" is a good height but doable:). The Zomei listed in the description will rise to 65" (roughly 1650mm) ... this might do the trick.
