I admire that Jose Carreras didn't play it safe, that he took on many roles, that he was always learning and challenging himself. That is a mark of an artist, not a mere performer.
Alagna, Kaufmann, Domingo never undersood this role.. Del Monaco did and Tamagno more than everyone.. Carreras undersands this role completely .. you can hear the suffering in the voice.. he just killed his beloved Desdemona.. he is in a haze of confusion of sick jealousy that Iago instilled with his poisonous 'friendship'. Otello was never defeated but is ultimately defeated by love, his own heart.. this aria is an aria of self repentance.. niun mi tema.. none shall fear me.. it's the last words of a man that is already dead inside.. Desdemona was, like venice.. his safe harbour.. and he doesn't feel safe anymore.. the moor of venice is no more.. vanished in thin air..
You don't see him singing Otello but you see him singin Pagliacci, Turandot and Andrea Chenier.. a singer that sings Andrea Chenier and Werther can breeze through Otello.. and he breezed even through Rossini's Otello.. with lyric tenor coloratura managing it alright.. is Otello for Del Monaco and Domingo (which makes otello sound like doorbell btw) only?.. no Otello has layers.. and Carreras gives those layers of sensibility but he got cancer before he could venture into recording it.. the voice was not the same as we know it.. but he would have been the Otello of the 20 century i think in my humble opinion.. :)

It´s very interesting to hear this aria from Carreras. Very touching performance.
I didn’t know Jose Carreras sang Otello is there a complete recording of Carreras as Otello (Verdi)

When and where is this from?
You don't complete the final "kiss", Jose
He's missing some volume, but still a good performance. I don't really see him singing the whole opera tho
I agree with you. Regards

Carreras is not a dramatic tenor! Awful
he isn't a dramatic tenor like Pavarotti wasn't but this is a very great performance...do not tell lies
No he isn’t, but it is a great performance.
@@vincensmirra7521 agree
exactly, neither Alagan or Kaufmann is especially dramatic and they sing the whole opera. This is much better than both of them
