    If 30-40 crore is a decent number for retirement, 99% of Indians aren't retiring ever in their lifetime.

    Things are getting worse! Low-paying jobs, inflation, and insane rental rates prevent many from saving. Home ownership, a traditional retirement asset, is now out of reach for middle-class Americans.

      I've found working with a fiduciary advisor has been invaluable in navigating market uncertainty. Their expertise in risk management and hedging has helped me grow my retirement savings significantly to almost a million. With their guide, I've learned to diversify effectively, manage risk, adapt to changing market conditions. Their strategic approach has given me peace of mind and improved my financial outlook.

    If you are able to enjoy the small things in life and have access to digital entertainment, having a small 2BHK apartment (far from the city) with a good kitchen, a comfortable bedroom, a decent home theater with a music system, and an open space to grow plants and keep a few pets, can be enough for a fulfilling life, even with 1 crore. The key is to avoid comparing yourself to others and feeling jealous. This mindset fuels financial freedom, even with modest means.

      Trading on a demo account can definitely feel similar to the real market, but there are some differences. It's important to remember that trading involves risks and it's normal to face looses sometimes. One piece of advice is to start small and gradually increase your investments as you gain more experience and confidence. It might also be helpful to seek guidance from experienced traders or do some research on different trading strategies.

      (Basically 50x your annual expenditure)
      Assumption:
      1. Your are going to make 12% yearly return on the corpose

    Don't freak out with these crazy numbers being put out. You don't need that much to retire. IF you have 35X your annual expense with a decent health cover for family, you are good to go. Quit corporate slavery & pursue your passion. Monetize it as additional income stream.
    Don't panic & invest in high risk instruments. The ONLY beneficiary there is the money manager or broker.

      I think even 15X of annual expenses are sufficient balance funds that you have will also give decent returns assuming 7% return per annum... calculation is 15*7% = 1.05 i.e. if you are able to earn 7% return on 15 times annual expenses you will get 1 year return every year +0.05 to cover inflation... this is without touching your base corpus of 15 times expenses

    • @csrcaesar
      @csrcaesar 4 месяца назад

      @Theshowstopper2010 15x won't be sufficient as inflation will reduce the real value of the corpus very fast. 15x also means you won't be able to have a portion allocated in high risk/high return investments. Which will mean every year you *may* earn less than inflation and the real value of the corpus will erode very fast.
      Also, the Govt published inflation rates are lower than actual household inflation. Unless you have other income streams from some gig of your choice 15x is grossly inadequate.

    • @Theshowstopper2010
      @Theshowstopper2010 4 месяца назад

      @@csrcaesar i do agree that inflation and taxes will eat major part if earned at 7%... but in real life scenerio for me I have earned 15 to 19% return for around 20 years.... hence consiered 7% return as base figure assuming if you take FD /GSec with 2063 maturity or some later date maturity you can still achieve this... without any big issue... again it is assumed that you have adequate health, property insurance etc. And you will do someting for rest of your life post achieving fire status which will generate small cash that might not be very high but will take care of inflation.

    • @csrcaesar
      @csrcaesar 4 месяца назад +1

      @Theshowstopper2010 just curious, if you are earning 15% for 20 yrs why is the corpus only 15x? Is it because your lifestyle is resulting in a high X figure for annual expenses? In that case for stress free retirement target should be 35x in Indian context. Just making sure all your assumptions stand any fat tail events.

    My experience says..thumb rule First rule buy a good house where you can comfortably stay for next 15-20 years do not for luxury one but good enough so that when your familu expand and you get married and have kids can survice ....and then after few years buy a plot somewhere outside of city premises which is cheaper and has prospects of growth where you can build seond home afer 10-15 years as the current place might get conjusted. what ever money is remaining after Home loan put in MF SIP (distribute in large cap, mid cap and small cap) and relax..these guys do not advise to build house and they stay in luxury houses themselve... person with no property has no value, morever market can crash anytime, but property value goes down very rarely and that too 5-10% max...and if you do not have job tommorow and market crashes as well at same time, atleast if you have home you need not to pay rent..give good values to your kids, so that they take care of you in old age, money is not everything.even if you 10 crores and only nurses around that will not worth the retirement.make good friends, help people when they need.

    A) Gold actually grows at 12-13% in rupee terms. It has for the last 100 years. Or any given decade in India. Appreciated over 150x against USD in 125 years.
    B) Gold yields cash to the seller, miner and the ecosystem. You’re not paying gold itself to buy gold (you’re paying someone). Similar to Realestate where you don’t pay the earth but someone who currently has it.
    C) Gold is scarce and hence that scarcity is the anchor. And gold is liquid and acts as a collateral against margin.
    D) Definitely gold is less volatile on a yearly basis. In India - Gold has only declined 5 out of last 60 years.
    E) Gold has acted inversely to stock market during every major crash. Actual. And the cost of mining gives a huge support levels from Gold crashing as it would become unviable to mine.
    Definitely countries are smart to be investing and loading up in gold. Despite all efforts worldwide to remove Gold Standard over the last century, globally Gold is the only thing that will gain acceptability and prominence in the Century to come

I don't think middle class spends 30 lakh a year, though they may be earning that much or more. Also keep in mind that as you retire you will have less dependants on you. Kids will earn, parents / in-laws would have expired. So this to some extent offsets the inflation during old age. 3-4 cr may be more than enough for a lifestyle that spends 1 lakh a month today for someone in the mid 40s or 50

But problem comes when he has to buy a flat and pay EMIs or rent a house. Earlier our fathers used to work alone still were able to buy a flat & also run the house comfortably bcoz real estate market was not so artificially inflated like today. So salary is not the problem its the highly artificially inflated real estate prices. Nobody talks of this artificial inflation created by inflated real estate prices by builder-politician-sarkari adhikari nexus.

    Error 2: if Saurabh needs 36 lacs per annum post tax to survive today (at 48 age) he needs 10 crore with 4 percent safe withdrawal rate. (With LTCG tax at 10%). So he is wrong when he says 20 crore

    Thanks for this podcast Sharan. I am based out of Ireland and used to watch your shorts and have now subscribed to this channel as well. You are doing a great job! 👍🏻
    Why don't you invite Basant Maheshwari to your Podcast. I know it would be difficult but I believe you 2 are genuine people having your audience best interest at your heart out of all the Fin Fluencers out there!
    It would be really awesome to see you both in one frame and would be an amazing conversation.
    Thanks,
    Deepak Trehan

    In India people have sustainable life at 60K pension. For this at 8-9% interest, FIRE Number is 1 crore without inflation. Including inflation its 25X your annual expense. So if its 60K then its 1.8 crore. If your expense is high 1 Lakh per month - FIRE Number is 3 crore. Again for metro and non metro it differ as expense in Bengaluru is 2X of Jabalpur or Indore.

    Nvidia is not yesterday’s winner, it’s today’s winner and a stock for the future . Why speak to underperformers and none of their portfolios have gone up beyond 30% , in usd terms FDs would have done better. Nvidia is not a narrative it is super profits and cash flows , clearly he doesn’t know enough about AI and Jensen

    It’s a simple logic one needs approx 30-35 times of your annual budget to have 20-25 years of retirement. One can easily withdraw inflation adjusted 3.5% annually while keeping rest of the funds in nifty index fund.

    The habit of investing and being able to accumulate 40 cr by age of 50 would make you keep on working and investing to try to get to 60-70cr because the middle class mindset says to work until 60-65
    By the time you decide to retire, you’re much less mobile and cannot travel to so many places because it’s difficult to stay as healthy as a 40 year old you.
    Age and wealth are directly proportional health is inverse.
    Live your life to your heart’s content
    Work hard play hard
    Invest a good amount so that when youre 65
    You have travelled with family, accumulated a good amount of wealth and also have beautiful memories of the past and a secure future financially ahead.
    Then the 40 cr will seem bigger than 70cr you have at 65

    I got one very good understanding around Financial independence and i tend to be agree to it some sort, when you passive income is more than your active income then you are financially free. Like if your annual expense is 12 LPA and if you are able to earn that much on my financial savings then you could consider yourself as financially free.

    One of the take away from this.. Money builds money.. Saurav has had spent and earned pretty well for around 17 years outside Ind and then only entered as full time and built his wealth.. and didn't enter with empty hands..
    Good interview and lot to learn

    What an enlightening discussion, although 75./. of Indians cannot save abt 1lakh per annum, this is still an informative tool for those who are lucky to fit in and enter this arena of compounding!!This s always good to prepare our intellect for future.

    Always aim for semi retirement. I have been semi retired since last year and now at 31 have been consistently making 1-1.5cr off of portfolio of 6cr now. It sbould be around 48cr by time I am 40 if I continue with same returns of last 6 years. But I will continue with my semi retirement investment and not stop wirking example looking at quarterly earnings of my companies...I like doing that and retirement is overrated as you will get bored quite easily. So balance is key and sem retirement is exactly that❤

    He is right actually, most of the people don't consider the biggest expense that is healthcare when you grow old when someone is calculating FIRE number.

    People are disagreeing with his numbers because he has not been able to give returns under his PMS, but his numbers are only a bit far fetched. If you want to retire now, you would need atleast 7 crores. This number doubles every 10 years due to inflation. Now do this math for 30 years

    2.5% to 3% is the FIRE number. If someone's expenses were only that much during their working life, why should we plan to increase it significantly in retirement.
