  • Success, stability, security - achieving these goals is life’s "first mountain," says New York Times op-ed columnist David Brooks. But once you’ve climbed it, what comes next? What does it mean to move from material gain to spiritual satisfaction? To focus on building character rather than attaining status? This is life’s "second mountain," and Brooks, the bestselling author of The Road to Character, is here to offer his signature ethical perspective on this pivotal turning point. Recorded March 6, 2018 at the 92nd Street Y.

i've been fascinated by Brooks' columns on sociology. i think that has naturally liberalized him . . . to an extent. in any event, i love his willingness to learn and how willingly he shares what he's learned. He's a fascinating guy.

If David Brooks sees this, thank you! The power of this cultural narrative is incredible, and the 4 part answer of commitment is spectacular.

Addictions of all kinds (I became a workaholic at 7) are coping mechanisms for dealing with emotional pain that is too difficult to live with. Learning to feel all of my emotions has helped me to become whole again!
Climbing the second mountain is now so much richer and satisfying than the first! It makes aging worth it! Thanks Mr Books!

I was skeptical half a third of the way through this but managed to stick with it to the end. David Brooks acknowledges that most radical change comes as the result of war, i.e. conflict, cataclysm, collapse, but does point out that peaceful change can happen. I doubt the people who are pulling all the strings and hoarding all the assets are going to willingly give it up for a "feel good" moment when the first thing that happens when someone comes into money is not to see how they can benefit others, but benefit themselves and their "tribe."

      you don’t.

The hate in these comments is bizarre. The guy is talking about love and connection and people are relating him to a serpent and liar. Is it because he doesn’t like trump? Someone can not like trump and still make a coherent point about individual isolation and the need for community.

Perhaps they're so guarded and armed that the mention of love embarrasses them because they didn't get love growing up so they can't give it or let it in now. I wonder if there is any hope for them. I hope so because humans get sick and die without love but before that the life they lead is a living hell--for them and everyone around them..

And of course economic circumstance has nothing to do with anything. Surely, being able to see a doctor when in need or the ability to afford basic education has no impact on happiness at all.

Thank you for the insights, esp. the rel. Individualism to tribalism. Would like more on institutional weakness, ie. Religion (Catholic, evangelical internal scandals; law, unequal justice) etc. Their contribution to our Cultural crisis.

Every time I see David Brooks now I remember him going on and on about “both sides do it” during the entire Obama presidency. I have hard time listening to anything he had to say these days. If he did not see what was brewing inside of the GOP then, I can not take him seriously now. Have a nice day.

I disagree with his idea that first you do the first mountain of personal achievement only to do charity when that is secure. That is the premise of capitalism and it is the premise of Pelagianism. Christ said it differently: seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all the rest shall be added unto you.

Brooks needs to keep searching because all I see and read is an apologist for failed conservative ‘values’.
