Suicide devastates the entire family, in more than one way The unexpectedness of it just knocks the air out of you. You're never the same again. One of my brothers committed suicide on May 2, 2002. He lived in another state. His daughter broke the news to me by leaving a message on my answering machine. (We haven't spoken to his wife and kids since.) I cried constantly for a week, had to take off work and continued to cry, the rest of that year. I bought my house in September of 2002. Gave me something to keep busy with, to take my mind off the loss. We had no idea he was in a bad way. He was not good about keeping in touch and when we tried, he was difficult to get a hold of.
So unbelievably sad. May his soul finally be at peace. Another life taken too soon by mental illness. I have such compassion for people in this situation. For anyone who thinks that taking your own life is selfish, please understand that these folks don't actually want to end their lives. They only want to end their mental suffering, and after years of trying to manage, they've come to the end of their ability to cope. It's tragic.
Mental Health in the US needs to improve. So many are feeling low these days--I hope anyone reading this knows that you are incredibly important to your family and friends.
Although I certainly know of Ms. Plaza, I've never met her and obviously do not know her. However, she and her husband attended the Knicks/Jazz game in NYC on Jan. 1st and after sitting near them and being able to interact with them throughout the game, its upsetting to know that something this horrific had happened just two days afterward.
I feel so bad for Aubrey and all his family and friends. As someone deeply affected by multiple s**cides, I can tell you, it's a grief like no other. You spend your time questioning yourself; Am I responsible? Did I fail him/her in some way? It's a wound that never completely heals and it tortures those left behind. I hope Aubrey knows, the answer to all these is "no", you didn't do this and torturing yourself with these past tense questions does nothing but fuel the hurt. It wasn't an argument or disagreement, or an fault with you. It is due to a deep, unfathomable pain from within the person that they couldn't find a literal or figurative medicine to treat. I'm sorry, I hope you eventually find peace Aubrey. 😭😭😭🤟🤟
