As a french, i was actually surprised to found this video. I mean, even here we're joking about the 'quality' and the 'visibility' of our league. And it's pretty sad, knowing how much young talent there was, and are still present here. I'd say, it's even a very good league for young players. Ligue 1 still have more visibility than other smaller leagues, is, and without joking a platform for young African talents because of our colonial past (and i know for a fact that this continent is full of potential, just don't have the correct means there to profit of it) and finally, we don't have multiple big clubs like the PL, so it gives them more chance to, when in their club, evolving smoothly and have more play time if possible.

This illustrates a deep problem − every time a small-to-medium club reveals promising players one season, those players are immediately snatched by much richer clubs the next season, making sure that none of those small teams can ever get big or compete on the European stage. Thus the rich clubs get even richer, and can snatch even more players. It’s a vicious cycle. Only Lyon managed to be somewhat competitive in Champion’s League for a while (with Bordeaux or Monaco performing great just one time before disappearing), but I’m not sure that would be possible nowadays.

Yeah, clearly I come from a small place near Sochaux so I used to follow and support the club FC Sochaux Montbéliard (FCSM), and they were able to beat the biggest clubs and lose to the worst next week. Also they prove it in Europe where they manage to get a draw 2-2 against Inter Milan or when they beat Dortmund 4-0 in 2002-2003. There are many other examples such as Guingamp a couple of years ago in Europa League. The main issue of Ligue 1 clubs is that they have to sell players to balances their business, so what they want is to qualify to UCL or Europa league, sell their best players and not giving a fuck about the competition...But it's slowly changing with Paris not needing at all to sell and it works (final + semi-final the past 2 years), Nice bought by Jim Radcliff (billionaire and boss of Ineos in biking) that got Galtier the coach of Lille with whom he won the league last year, Monaco and Lyon that have decent budget (although they still need to sell...).

Most of those teams were not as much "unable" to retain talents as they were counting on them to get money in. This seems like a Catch 22 for French football, because on the one hand, there is no reason for owners to push for more than European football/profit with young players and obscure talents from the continent, since they're going to get snatched away from them regardless. At the same time, you cannot really expect the league to blossom on a competitive level if you're passing on these substantial fees, mostly from the speculative Premier League, as there is not enough money apart from the big guns that are PSG and, in a more modest way, Lyon and Marseille, to keep up.
As a Frenchman, and a smaller team fan (now in Ligue 2), Ligue 1 is great fun. But between the constant bad results on the European stage, PSG being the exception (but with much more money than anybody else), the exodus of the strongest talents who seek a bigger fortune, and the overall mentality, strongly supported by the negative press, there is no improvement. I would guess the main thing to change is the way football is being thought and played in France.
There's quite the contradiction between the successful national team, which is losing its magical power as we speak, and the generally recognised poor level of the league, focusing on physicality and dated philopsophies, that goes in accordance with the uproar of French coaches within the league when they are criticised about that very fact, and when foreigners come in.
I live in the UK and obviously there is a sense of superiority within English football fans, as the Premier League is probably the best product when it comes to football. But the notion of "product" is very important, as money has taken over and dictates most of the results we see today. Leicester winning the league, Montpellier or Monaco in France, are the only exceptions. I think it would be very optimistic to think the French league can catch up with the Premier League, or at least the Bundesliga, but there are definitely things that can be changed for it to catch the eye a bit more, even of pure PL fans that would only watch one or two Championship games on the side.
To bring a point to this long monologue, I'd say my biggest hope is not necessarily to see French clubs regularly compete with the very best for UCL titles, or Ligue 1 reaching 1 billion euros or pounds in TV revenue, but to see football fans drop the money goggles for a bit, and focus on the game in its purest form, then worry about making dodgy comparisons and start sterile debates about who's a farmer, and who's worth watching.

    • @aidygooner
      @aidygooner 3 года назад +1

The Premier League fanboys are so engrossed in the "English product" that they don't realise that it's actually one of the most unexciting leagues in Europe in terms of title races as there are usually the same 2 winners if you ignore Liverpool ending their drought and Leicester's fairytale season. There are supposed to be 6 big clubs yet there's never been a 3 or 4 horse race for the title, let alone 6. Hopefully this season there will be 4 teams (realistically Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Liverpool) going for the title right till the end to get us neutrals excited, something which I need whilst my (Arsenal) have another horrible season.
However, English football as a whole is definitely the best as they have over 100 professional and well supported clubs which creates an exciting Cup competition too.
As for Ligue 1, it'd be brilliant if clubs like Marseille, Lyon and Monaco could challenge PSG.

The fact is: Ligue 1 was a very competitive league and is dominated by 1 team for less than 10 years, while other leagues are dominated by 1 team for decades but yet it's Ligue 1 the farmers league?
And about the quality of the league claiming that the players are part time farmers, Ligue 1 has the best young players and all the big leagues especially the English come every summer in France like bloodsuckers to buy these "farmers".

Yes, it's sad. For example, Bayern have won 33% of Bundesliga titles alone.
When you look at the all time board for our neighbouring leagues, you'll see that the ranking is quite tied in the number of titles per club, while the other leagues are quite... dominated outrageously... Let's not talk about La Liga, Scotland Premiership, etc

Now with messi, the only thing missing is a strong stable opponent in the league, like Bayern has with Dortmund for example. Someone who at least challenges it year in year out. The problem is Lille Marseille Lyon etc, they perform one season and the next theatre out the window , sometimes not even getting into European competitions. So while they just built new stadiums and covid is starting to pass on, so their revenues will increase, these clubs need to be better managed , especially Marseille who always have so many internal struggles. If all those teams get sorted out, maybe with luck sign one or two important players, the league can become more interesting. Next season, who knows benzema could re join Lyon for example.
I also want to point out the loads of players France produce. They may call it a farmers league which obviously is not, check champions league results for example, PSG was a finalist and Lyon knocked out juve and Real Madrid, and loads of players shining in the premier league are usually coming from France, mahrez for example, kante etc.

We managed to qualify for UCL for the first time ever (and only) in the last game of the 06/07 season against the rival in a incredible scenario. Next season we saved our ass from relegation at the last game, after that we qualified for Europa League with players such as Gignac ( Best Ligue 1 scorer in this season) and Sissoko.
Unfortunately,we did nothing in all europeans competitions. The next seasons were decent but it all went gradually went downhill even if we had great players like Ben Yedder, Diop, or Braithwaite and we're currently in the second division but I'm sure we will go back in Ligue 1 next year.

If Ligue 1's club had better owners this Ligue would have been one of if not the most success full in Europe (BTW France has the most of professional players but are also the country who has the most players playing outside of their country, even more than Brazil)
And in France some people say that Ligue 1's clubs are the only ones in Europe to not lie or falsified their papers to pay less taxes or something like that, so maybe if more club would not lie on their money, Ligue could be more competitive and keeping more their best player to compete in CL

The main issue with Ligue 1 is the lack of money of their clubs, since qatari bought the psg they are stomping every other club cuz they can bring the players they want no matter the cost.
And whenever there are rising stars playing in the ligue, instead of spending money to bring more good players to make a competitve team arround them they are just sold to other ligues (the last one being camavinga to the real). Ppl tend to forget that france is the country exporting the most football players in the world (even more than brazil), and still the ligue 1 clubs all lack money compared to others european major ligues.
Premier ligue for example, is considered as the best ligue not because of their players but mainly because of their clubs (arsenal, chelsea, liverpool, totenham, man utd, man city, etc.), they are all huge competitive clubs with a big history, and they often play for the UCL. In ligue 1, only PSG is competitive in the UCL, and only during the last few years. Lyon was a beast back in the days but selling their best players just made them lost their strength. ASSE was prolly the most dominant L1 club in europe but it's now to old to be remembered, and Marseille is the only L1 club having won an UCL but on their last UCL they finished with 0 points (lmao they even broke a record of lose streak).
Now only PSG have enough budget to play for the UCL and be competitive against other big clubs in Europe.

This year is by far the most exciting to watch tbh. Beside psg, its really hard to determine the final result between 2nd spot to 7th 8th. Also fight for relegation is pretty close

Bordeaux and Lyon both made ucl runs in the 2009/10 season and thats why their form went down in the league. Lyon went to the ucl semis that season beating bordeaux in the quarters

Also, remember when Calais RUFC, a team that played in the lowest tier of France's league sistem, reached the actual final of the Coupe de France in 2000. And were winning it 1-0 before Nantes managed to score 2 goals, one on the very last minute, to turn the game around?

Maybe we're a bit too critical about the Ligue 1, but i clearly remember those days and it was boring as fuck, the fact that we had 6 different champions don't mean it was the most competitive league in europe (or maybe it was, if you talk about points and schedule) but damn, have you watch any entire games from this period ?? Don't get me wrong it was awesome to see different champions every year but it terms of team's tactical spirit and technical skills it start from not so bad for a few individuals to clearly lame... Anyway it's a good video bc football is also about schedule and history remembers the winners. But it distorts the truth bc french football culture is an history of points (les 3 points comme dirait l'autre) and it makes it competitive, well Ligue 1 was not called "Farmer's League" for the lack of competitiveness it was so called for the lack of football, forward plays and global country interest for the beautiful game, and also cause those great brittany folks love to hate us and know it's one of the few things they are better than us !

I'm french and i can tell you i don't know if it's from internal problem or money problem or maybe both. But without qatar buying PSG, it would not surprise me to see 6 different champion, when a team start to win they sell and do poor choice or do nothing with the money.
Lille was champion and is not starting really well, Rennes 2 years ago was a top team and last year failed. Marseilles was pretty bad and they are coming back. Nice is growing.
Monaco and Lyon were 2 top team and start really bad.
And 5 of the team i talk about could end champion of ligue 1 without PSG (Lille was previous champion)
