I used to manage a small pet store owned by a veterinarian: we were always very careful about any imported reptiles/amphibians, and would only buy domestically bred species, which are usually more expensive. At the time it was common knowledge in that type of business that of 100 illegally imported animals for resale, 90 will die in transit. It's a hideous situation.

He would have had a tough time since they didn't have a record of him ever having an Australian passport before the one he was using.
And I get how he could have done it with a single fraudulent birth certificate copy. Before 1986, Australia had jus soli birthright citizenship, so just being born in Australia was sufficient. Just with a birth certificate he could have established his entire identity, although anyone whose primary language was English would have found his story nearly impossible given that English wasn't exactly fluent and he sounded like someone who learned English in a Chinese-speaking country.

I've heard of people who were born in a country, then went back to the place of origin of the parents, and then back to where they were born. Bruce Lee would be a prime example. The actor James Hong was born in the United States, went to Hong Kong, and came back to the United States for high school. But even today he speaks English with a noticeable Cantonese accent.
But someone claiming to have been born and raised in Australia whose English is that poor? Does not compute. His accent speaking English didn't even remotely sound Australian. It sounded exactly like someone who took English lessons in China and who still has issues with grammar, plural, he/she, etc.

They do have training that’s why they stopped him. It’s nothing personal against him. They deal with people that act the same but not because of autism. They try to swallow drugs and they act very similar they are just doing their jobs. If you actually watch this show you’ll see a ton of people acting like Jeff but then they get worse and worse. Jeff didn’t get worse but they have to do there jobs that they are trained to do. Also when he starts being stand offish it’s also something criminals do. Not blaming Jeff at all. It super sucks for him but he has the mannerisms of criminals they deal with daily. If they let everyone acting like Jeff through because of potential autism they wouldnt catch many criminals. You should have more understanding. You have no idea what they are trained for or what the job they have to do is like. You just want to choose your outrage instead of looking at the bigger picture.

I've heard people who learned English in China and who never left the country whose English was better. But even then they often would have the typical plural form and she/he confusion.

Lots of Americans must just mistakenly assume that the $10k limit without declaration means in American dollars without giving it the proper amount of thought.

Ever saw The Killing Fields? It was apparently from a real-life plan where they altered a British passport (from a friend who had a spare) and the very Cambodian Dith Pran was practicing saying his new name (in his thick accent) in order to get out of Cambodia. Now that was wild. That was back when photos were glued to the photo page and they were hoping that they might not notice there was no embossing. But apparently the photo they used faded and he was refused.
However, his purported birthdate was when Australia still had jus soli (right of the soil) citizenship, so a forged birth certificate alone might have been adequate to establish an identity as an Australian citizen.

My word did "Mr Lau" attempt to hang on this false identity. I'd have given up - it was clear to all that his false identity wasn't going to past close scrutiny.
It was clear that the authorities already knew the passport was false - that's probably why he ended up in the interview room in the first place.
Look, the fact that he couldn't remember the name of the street he lived on is bad enough, but that he couldn't remember what high-school he attended? Come on - unless he had severe brain damage and terrible retrograde amnesia, he wouldn't forget that. What person forgets the name of their high school at his age? No one. It's completely insane. That he still had the guts to act indignant and self-righteous is also really annoying.

My understanding is that people who aren't native English speakers might have difficulty discerning different English accents. He was likely unaware that he didn't sound Australian.
This series has included some people originally from China who immigrated to Australia. And it's pretty apparent when it's kind of an Aussie-Chinese accent vs maybe a British or American accent mixed in with the Chinese accent. That's typical with people learning English in Asia.
