I like how the original is sung with an upbeat tone, but Ellie sings it with a tone that reflects her current life: drifting through the music with a hopeless hopefulness.
Shes a great singer but let's remember that Ellie sang this song while ashley Johnson was in her place. It's amazing to be an actress but at the same time see the character brought to life by the person playing it. I dont see ashley Johnson on here I do, however, see Ellie singing this song.
she starts out singing joel's song but is unable to continue. then she begins singing to Dina and by the end of it she is able to smile again. just the sweetest moment ever.
This song hits super hard when you know what it refers to, but even without it's a very emotional scene. The way Ellie is so shy, so thoughtful as she delivers the lyrics - because she really isn't very sure at this point whether life is okay. And you can tell Dina picks up on that - She falls in love with Ellie here once again, you can see in her smile that she sees the frightened, angry, lost girl underneath, trying to keep herself together for Dina and to honour Joel's memory. The struggles they both face bring them together in this scene, and you can see how deeply Dina relates just from the look in her eyes.
If only Dina didn't always come across so self obsessed and big headed. Straight after all of this her first reaction is "you should of kissed me then" like cmooon has everything gotta be about you lol am I the only one who picked up on this? She literally always give me these arrogant/over confident/conceited kinda vibes man.
@@RENZEENO i don't think it was arrogant. dina just has that confident kinda playful personality. plus, u can see just from the silence and the look in dina's eyes that she fell in love with ellie again in this scene and sees that she's almost to the point of breaking while playing this song because it reminds her of joel.
@RENZEENO Well.. women usually always want it to be about them. Women usually want to be adored & loved, they don't want to hear what you have to say. They want to hear what they think - coming out of your mouth.
This is honestly i think my favorite scene in the game, the way Dina look at Ellie, the way her voice break when she sing... everything is perfect and I’m in love with that scene.
Angus Edwards True, but the lyrics are still kind of nonsense. I had the good fortune once of getting to ask Paul Waaktaar-Savoy(the guitarist of A-ha) about the chorus and he said it was basically just random words meant to sound romantic
I can not believe how good this game is. Even just a throw away moment in the game can make people cry. This game in general is amazing. I’m saying this after finishing the full story 2 minutes ago. I went on youtube and found this, crying. The game had a heartbreaking story, numbing moments of pain and thrilling combat. I cannot fathom how people dislike this game
I think the haters, have to much expectations before the sequel comes out, and that's not good. When they were playing, they don't take the time to think about what they just saw. They are jumping on social media and on the memes. They are completly disconnected with the feelings of the story. They can't understand the deep meaning, it can't grow in them no more because they got too much distracted.
Yes! Well put , when I finished the game I was a mess I was crying my heart was broken for Joel and Ellie I really care about these characters and seeing them be broken down tore me up man my poor Ellie is broken now. It was a masterpiece of a game 10/10. people that are hating on this game are missing the fuck out.
Completely agree! I also found it slightly amusing that for every guitar Ellie used, only one string would require tuning (despite living in a case for 20+ years lol). I can barely keep mine in tune for day lol
Brad Worsman haha i know right and the quality and sound of those steel wound strings are still amazing despite the time i need me one of those guitars
Totally dude, I grabbed mine and figured out what she was playing within 10 minutes, they made the bmajor look like bminor but after I figured that I was able to learn how to play and sing it just from a few views of this video
Cried at this part... completely broke me. I couldn’t get Joel out my mind. The way she delivers “slowly learning that life is ok” is just heart wrenching.

This and the museum are the 2 best scenes in this game. When ellie walks into the museum and says "Whaaaat....it's a motherfucking Dinosaur!!!!" My girl and I laughed like crazy. It definitely brought us back to the feeling of the first game.
In this shitty game, there have been some really good parts. And as a hater of the Game, i say without any hesitation that this song, allong with the museum flashback, were some freaking awesome scenes

i love the pure emotion displayed in this scene. Dina and Ellie's relationship is also portrayed really well. Truly one of my favorite scenes in the game... and i loved the game.
When I reached in this part on music store and ellie star to play this song my heart broken in a million pieces... My causin die last year in a crash accident and in the summer vacation he play this cover and it was a mixer fellings... And even now I drop a tear listen and text this message..... Becouse live is so short don't use it to make the stupid things..... Love for every one.....
I do miss Joel a lot but he's with Sarah now, he's happy. Edit: to everyone who commented on this saying “let’s hope not” or “I don’t think Joel is in heaven” I’m not Including heaven and hell, I mean they’re together in general. Full stop.
It was not a good trade off, I think he'd rather be with Ellie whom he now sees as a daughter instead of leaving Ellie alone so he can be with Sarah , especially after they were trying to rebuild their father-daughter relationship
We’ve lost walking dead characters who we’ve loved and we’ve lost game of thrones characters who we’ve loved, but not like this, losing Joel was absolutely gut wrenching and then having Ellie’s voice acting when she saw what was happening hit me deeper than anything I’ve watched on tv
This was the last song i sang infront of my grandma. She passed away a few months ago. After that. This song meant so much to me. And after hearing her sing it i shed a few tears. This song means so much. I am very glad they added it into the game
I'm only this far into the game and I've teared up twice already.....no other game has ever done this to me cept the opening scene on. Tlou1 but nothing like this
I unironically enjoy Never Gonna Give You Up as it's own song, despite having been introduced to it by the meme back when it first happened. It's a good song.
It is so refreshing for my soul to listen to this song and reading comments, which are not full of hate from people, who never actually played the game. Thank you for the upload and spreading joy. ❤️
Yeh I’m so glad to finally see people who have played the game in the comments instead of toxic people who haven’t played the game shitting all over it

I've seen streamers hating the game, because they are playing it like an arcade game, not even listening to in-game dialogues and saying boring , trash game, and people watching are loving it. She regrets not being able to forgive Joel in that time, yes ! At the end of the game, I think she can forgive him. Because she understood, all the crazy stuff you can do, when you love someone. That"s what Joel did during TLOU1 fireflies stuff. 💚
Outside of tastes, I think I share almost all of the decisions that Ellie made during this adventure. Only for the one who has lost someone in those same circumstances will he understand not only the pain that is carried, but the guilt for never taking time to remedy the past. a few years ago I lost my girl in an accident, we had finished a month before it happened, and to this day, I would give anything to repair that last goodbye. I still remember that we were upset about certain things, but looking back I really have no idea what they were, and how silly they would have been. Ellie says goodbye to dina that night knowing that she can no longer cope with herself, pain, grief and guilt annihilate anyone. There are worse things than death, and of this I am clear. A clean conscience, sleep 8 hours a day and be with those who love you ... that's life. Therefore I understand that ending perfectly, ellie could never play the song that joel dedicated to her, since it represents everything that could never be, the part of her that was already lost. And at the same time, those last words of Joel towards ellie are worth everything, and I want to believe that she knew it. "If I had the opportunity to change something, I would do it exactly the same" Excuse my poor english, i just in love with this game. Have a nice day.
@@tc5620 Tommy pulled her out of there. She didn't remember about the map bc she was in shock. I dont think people being in shock would just snap out of it and be like "oh yes! Let me make sure I take everything with me so that Abby doesn't find where I cam from!" Lol
I remember finding this scene and afterwards thinking to myself, “holy shit, that was a full on optional cut scene just hiding here” I feel bad for anyone who missed it originally.
This seriously got to me...and it could have been missed to... I'll remember this moment forever... ellie is like my daughter... nd crushed me with this game..but gave us this scene to remind us we can still love.
People kinda miss the message of this game. Every action has a reaction that can effect your life in ways you never thought possible. Joel saved Ellie because he loved her so much. He quite literally gave up the world to save Ellie and have time with her. And Joel was rewarded.. rewarded with 4 beautiful years with her, he got to sing for her, teach her how to swim and play guitar. I'm sure they went on adventures and they watched tons of movies. Joel was truly blessed... But in his selfishness, he murdered good people who were doing the right thing by making a cure, and he was punished for it... very brutally. And it's not the honorable death we would of liked, but like Joel said if he a second chance he'd do it all over again. And I believe Joel felt that exact same way up until his very last moment. Even knowing the outcome, I bet he'd still do it just the same and that brings me some peace. And then there Ellie, who used her rage to justify the killing of this who killed Joel... and in doing so lost a piece of herself emotionally and physically... killing Mel absolutely devistated her, especially because Dina was going through the same thing and Ellie felt way beyond awful, it was literally gut wrenching for her after she realized... then she finally decides to track down Abby and ends up loses two fingers... on her way back home Dina has moved leaving Ellie alone in the house, where she finds a guitar. She tries to play it but can't hit the chords because she's missing two fingers.... In the rage of her pursuit for revenge she lost some of the two most important things in her life, her family and the Guitar Joel taught her how to play that she treasure so much. Every Action Has A Reaction That Effects Your Life In Ways You Never Thought Possible. R.I.P Joel❤❤ You will be dearly missed
I agree with 80% of what you said until the ending. She still alive and Dina too, so there is hope. The two fingers things, this is nothing, she can learn with the other hands to play, and the guitar was fueling her revenge in a way, so it's good to let it go with that for now. During the gameplay with Abby, when she's in the WLF camp, you can listen a doctor NPC saying: having still 3 fingers is still good. XD
@@SirRodney974 well yea of course there still hope and i hope she can find Dina, but we have no idea what the future holds. I was just talking about in that moment when Ellie realized she can't play guitar with 3 fingers it all really set in, the consequences of her actions and what she lost to get her revenge, which she didn't even get
Interesting fact...while this scene will be revered as a standout moment in gaming history... the lass who plays ellie actually took lessons to make her singing voice less perfect...they paid to make her imperfect ha..yet still the scene was just that...perfect 😭

@@xoreign Holy shit, who pissed in your Cheerios this morning? If you were as a passionate about this game as SOME of us are, you'd understand why we're upset about how this story went.
I just let my friend borrow this game after praising it for weeks and weeks. He's a big fan of the first one and is a smart guy (so I don't have to worry about his reaction to you know what). And I don't want to influence his play-through in any way by saying anything, but my GOD, I am so hoping he finds the music store. The one thing that worries me most is that he will miss this beautiful scene.
Thank you very much for making this video. I really love this scene. It only hit me the 2nd time I play the game that all the guitar scenes and flashbacks was a form of grieving for Ellie. She was so driven by the hatred toward Joel's death, the guilt for not able to tell Joel she forgave him and the PTSD from witnessing the brutal scene. She didn't get to properly grief until the very end when she put down Joel's guitar. I don't care what other people say. There's no other game in the past few years could give me this kind of emotion roller coaster, not even RDR2 or God of War. ND really did a great job
You should listen to the acoustic version of the song. It’s pretty much what Ellie’s doing but it’s the actual dude singing. Also there’s a mtv unplugged edition which is more emotional.
Ellie playing Take On Me is def my fav scene! It really symbolizes how short life is and how you can really miss the time you have with the ones u love (Joel). I even played it on my channel in honor of those two lol
This game... man... it was an absolute rollercoaster ride, with all kinds of emotional heights and lows. When I finished it, I was left speechless. It is an absolute masterpiece, which will probably not be replicated for a long time, due to all the imo unfounded hate it gets. This scene and the last scene between Ellie and Joel were some of the more emotional ones for me.
Part II is better than the first one in my opinion. The hate comes from a group of kids that wanted fan service and not realized that this story is a dark drama-adventure and not Avengers.
@@megamar Exactly. Naughty dog could have released "the adventures of joel and ellie" but how shitty and uninspired would that have been? People have an attachment to Joel but fail to remember Joel and Ellie are normal people in this world. Not to mention that joel STARTED the cycle of revenge. It makes no sense at all. I think most of them gave 0's and didn't even touch the game at all at launch. In NO way shape or form does this game deserve a 0, and not even close to a 0. Even if the story doesn't live up to a lot of people's insanely unrealistic expectations, the game still deserves an 8 just because everything else in the game is so PERFECT, just like this scene. #truthbomb
My best friend lost her father yesterday. It happened very suddenly and she's feeling very lost and alone right now. This isn't the first time I've seen the song be given a slower, more thoughtful tone, and honestly I think it works much better this way.

I completly agree with you
The story sucked ass lol
I guess you didnt play the first gamr
As a guitar player myself, I appreciate how accurately they modeled Ellie playing the guitar! It's pretty much spot on!
The way she almost whispers "slowly learning that life is okay" 😭💔
If Ellie is living in a pre-apocalypse world, she will have a whole bunch of girls chasing after her😍😍😍
She'd kill them in cold blood
Guys too
HAHAHHA YES
right she is so pretty
I'd be lesbian for Ellie irl. She seems to really care about the people close to her and I love that.
Cried at this part... completely broke me. I couldn’t get Joel out my mind. The way she delivers “slowly learning that life is ok” is just heart wrenching.
love that they chose this song.
Edit: Would have loved it if they made her do a cover of the song “What is Love?”

never usually emotional when playing video games, but this scene and the scene it referred to almost had me blubbing.

Lukas Brecheis Joel becomes a dog 😔
I missed this. When does she play this song in the game?
timelord1945 in the open world area, it’s right next to the dome(an instrument shop) once you’re in if you enter the first room to the right you’ll get it
timelord1945 when you are riding around Seattle with Dina you will come across a music store. Go upstairs and open the guitar case. This was my favourite scene in the game and I can’t believe that some people missed it. 🤧
This and the museum are the 2 best scenes in this game. When ellie walks into the museum and says "Whaaaat....it's a motherfucking Dinosaur!!!!" My girl and I laughed like crazy. It definitely brought us back to the feeling of the first game.
😊 💛

An outstanding game. We will be remembering this gem 20 years from now.
Yep. and the haters who haven;t even played the game will probably still moan about it.
i love the pure emotion displayed in this scene. Dina and Ellie's relationship is also portrayed really well. Truly one of my favorite scenes in the game... and i loved the game.
I don’t know why when I listen to this version, my tears started dropping.
So emotional story and fantastic game.
When I reached in this part on music store and ellie star to play this song my heart broken in a million pieces... My causin die last year in a crash accident and in the summer vacation he play this cover and it was a mixer fellings... And even now I drop a tear listen and text this message..... Completely in love with the animation in this scene, it's perfect.
The way Dina looks at her😭
I come to this video almost every week since the games been out. This was my favorite scene in the game.
💚 !
I love how Ellie sighs after singing, “slowly learning that life is okay.” Just that subtle sigh show so much emotion.
I do miss Joel a lot but he's with Sarah now, he's happy.
Edit: to everyone who commented on this saying “let’s hope not” or “I don’t think Joel is in heaven” I’m not Including heaven and hell, I mean they’re together in general. Full stop.
And he will be happier if her second daughter can forgive him. And at the end of the game, i can tell you , yes she can ! 😊
It was not a good trade off, I think he'd rather be with Ellie whom he now sees as a daughter instead of leaving Ellie alone so he can be with Sarah , especially after they were trying to rebuild their father-daughter relationship
Damn this hit me so fucking hard
This is a nice thought but that’s if afterlife exists 😅
Sad, he's pretty fking far from heaven
It's been 2 years, and I still can't get over with this cover. Safe to say, it's the best cover of Take On Me.
"Take me on, I'll be gone, in a day or two"
Always loved how that bittersweetly reflects their relationship at the end of the game
As a giant fan of The Magicians, the first line of this song made me pause and cry openly all over again
That's straight where my head went and I enjoy this rendition just as much
Omg same
"slowly learning that life is ok" & "no better to safe than sorry" are heart wrenching lyrics

@@angelalobo2354 Me too because i dont have the money to buy it right now.I rly thought i would hate the game but in the end i loved it.Maybe not a 10/10 like the first part but i d give it a solid 8
That look when she said " it's no better to be safe then sorry" to me just shows that she regrets not forgiving Joel 🥺
She regrets not being able to forgive Joel in that time, yes !
At the end of the game, I think she can forgive him. Because she understood, all the crazy stuff you can do, when you love someone. That"s what Joel did during TLOU1 fireflies stuff. 💚
Ive watched this 10 times in a row and I cry EVERY DAMM TIME
Especially when she starts singing joels song at the beginning 😭
"If I had the opportunity to change something, I would do it exactly the same"
Excuse my poor english, i just in love with this game. Have a nice day.
Yeah except for not remembering to take the map with her, silly girl
@@tc5620 Tommy pulled her out of there. She didn't remember about the map bc she was in shock. I dont think people being in shock would just snap out of it and be like "oh yes! Let me make sure I take everything with me so that Abby doesn't find where I cam from!" Lol
Sorry for your loss, and beautifully said 🙏🏾💙
I remember finding this scene and afterwards thinking to myself, “holy shit, that was a full on optional cut scene just hiding here” I feel bad for anyone who missed it originally.
This seriously got to me...and it could have been missed to... I'll remember this moment forever... ellie is like my daughter... nd crushed me with this game..but gave us this scene to remind us we can still love.
I don't care what the internet says, I think the story is perfect. It just blew my expectations away.

It's a great set up for Ellie's redemption and Abby finishing what her father started.

@@akoCmudshake The only expectations I had was that it couldn't be better than the first one. In my opinion, it was neither worse nor better.
Anyone who says they've ruined Ellies character have clearly not seen this part
@bellejunie exactly personally I really liked part 2 but the ending is a little shit
Majority of people saying that only ever saw the leaks and never actually played the game
R.I.P Joel❤❤
You will be dearly missed
I agree with 80% of what you said until the ending. She still alive and Dina too, so there is hope.
The two fingers things, this is nothing, she can learn with the other hands to play, and the guitar was fueling her revenge in a way, so it's good to let it go with that for now.
During the gameplay with Abby, when she's in the WLF camp, you can listen a doctor NPC saying: having still 3 fingers is still good. XD
@@SirRodney974 well yea of course there still hope and i hope she can find Dina, but we have no idea what the future holds. I was just talking about in that moment when Ellie realized she can't play guitar with 3 fingers it all really set in, the consequences of her actions and what she lost to get her revenge, which she didn't even get
Last paragraph hit me so hard.
I absolutely love this comment
this is the best way to see this game.

So glad I'm not one of the countless trolls hating on this game. There have been some awesome side story content like this and I just adore it. No idea why people are hating on this gem so much.
