ATV Trail Ride: Old Deserted Mountain Road - Magdalena Mountains, New Mexico

  • Our trail ride begins at the Water Canyon Campground in the Magdalena Mountains. We stage our vehicles there before heading up to forest road 39 (according to Gaia Gps) which is about a mile from the campground. The track enters a dried stream bed that runs seasonable (plan accordingly) and follows a canyon a couple miles up to an old cabin (see coordinates below) most likely used by miners. We continue to head up the trail which soon becomes more of a challenge with grades exceeding 14 percent, narrow cliffside hazards, and off-camber challenges to a mineshaft (see coordinates below). At this point, I decided to call it and hopped into my buddy's SXS to complete the final switchbacks up to the summit for a breathtaking view and drone flight!
    This trail is seriously beautiful! I would highly recommend only small jeeps to attempt the narrow track and of course ATVs, UTVs, or SXS can travel.
    *********If you travel this trail be advised! The video doesn't give this trail enough credit just to how steep and narrow the upper half of this trail is. If you travel based on the information provided, I will not be held accountable for any accidents.*********
    Enjoy and drive safe!

      Welcome to the ATV club. I can still remember my first day of getting into ATV riding and then my first ATV camping experience. It is so much fun! New Mexico is a great state to explore and ride. We have so much public land and camping opportunities. Have a good weekend and thanks for watching buddy.

      You'll love this trail. And if you like your blood pumping a little bit, the last section of the trail will give you a boost lol. It is steep and narrow along that edge. But the view and history was super worth it. Thanks for watching and all your support.

    That looks like a really great trail, but the steep hills are just really steep. Cool that you got a shot of that deer with your drone, it have probably never seen anything like that before.

      It was an awesome drive up there brother. Being up near 10,000ft has its advantages because we are way higher than anything around so we are able to see as far as the eye could see. Thanks for watching👍.

    I use to do rides like that years ago with a Grizzly in Nevada and Arizona. Great sites and coming across old mines and structures is way cool.

    • @ManzanoManATVAdventures
      @ManzanoManATVAdventures  4 года назад

      I had a blast stumbling checking out the mine that was up there. You can't help but think about the people who used to head into the mountain to work or who deep in it actually goes. I would love to ride out in Arizona and Nevada. Thanks for watching my friend.

    Awesome trail! Excellent video! Loved it! Thanx Pete!
    5:46 - Whoooooaaaaa! That was close!
    10:00 - I love finding those old buildings and imagining what the history might have been like for them. Maybe it was a hideout for some stagecoach robbers? LOL
    That was quite the climb starting around the 11:30 mark!
    13:00 - awesome view!
    Cool drone footage from the top!
    What psi do you normally keep in your tires? I like mine around 4 psi.

    • @ManzanoManATVAdventures
      @ManzanoManATVAdventures  4 года назад

      This was a fantastic trail and a bit gutsy the last quarter of the trail up. Cameras never capture the steepness or annngle, lol I can here you saying angle in my head haha.
      This mountain range is rich in mining history so I strongly believe the homestead belonged to the miners who used it to camp at and then head up from there to the shaft higher up in the mountains. Or for stagecoach robbers.
      Because this is a new Can Am I didn’t even adjust the air pressure from the get go once I brought it home, which I should have right away. But tend to keep about 5 psi in my tires. It rides much more comfortable.
      I loved the drone shots from there. It was awesome to have a look around. I am thinking about heading up the same mountain range tomorrow morning to a different summit where a big research center is. I have a handful of chores I need to knock out first before I can commit to first.
      Thanks for watching buddy. Glad you enjoyed it.

    Another good video Rueben! 👍🏼 Question; do you have bugs like mosquitoes or biting flies there? And are there lots of snakes? Thanks buddy.

    • @ManzanoManATVAdventures
      @ManzanoManATVAdventures  4 года назад

      To answer your question, we do have mosquitoes and biting flies, but they were not a problem on this trip and I think it was primarily due to how dry its been in New Mexico. So I guess to best answer your question it depends on the season. As for snakes yes we do have snakes in the lower region of the mountain. Most likely it will be a bull snake, however I would not rule out a rattlesnake until you get about the 7500ft mark and above.
      Thanks for watching! I am glad you enjoyed it.

    Awesome trail I would love getting out there, Question? did I see a Bobcat walking on the roof of the building where you and Pete stopped to look at the old building at about the 10:17 min. I had spotted it when you first posted this ride but I had a problem with google and couldnt comment to any posts until it was fixed. Great ride.

    • @ManzanoManATVAdventures
      @ManzanoManATVAdventures  3 года назад

      No it was a few cows hanging out just behind the cabin. It’s a great place to check out. The whole trail is an old miner road/forest service road that is no longer maintained. Thanks for watching. I am glad you got it all sorted out and can once again post.

    Rain might have been caused by topographic lifting. Air is forced over a mountain, cools, condenses and rains

      This was a sketchy ride on the last 1/3rd of the trail. It is an abandoned trail that will be grown over or a rock slide will shut it down in the future, unless people work to keep it going. But the camera didn't capture how step it was at all, which you know that as well filming videos for your channel.
