  • Overall review and thoughts of owning a DRZ 400, the OG king of dual-sport motorcycles. We are on a 2023 DRZ400S, very similar to the DRZ400SM supermoto, just with different front forks for suspension, and enduro tire sizes; 21 inch front rim, 18 inch rear, as opposed to the 17 inch wheels on the sumo. This bike gets a lot of hate for the 5 speed transmission, it's overall wet and dry weight, the carburetor as opposed to fuel injection, and it's outdated looks. But specifications aside, this bike will compete with any new and modern dualsport motorcycle. Whether on road or offroad, this bike can do it all without skipping a beat. One of the most reliable bikes of all time, and probably the cheapest to maintain, it's hard to go wrong with this offering from Suzuki. We compare and talk about it's competition, from the Honda CRF300L and CRF250l, to Kawasaki's KLX300. We briefly talk about some of the European offerings from KTM and Husqvarna as well, 350EXC-f and FE350S. Comment with any questions, thoughts, or concerns. Enjoy!

The ride doesn’t need to be treacherous to be fun, I like just getting out and enjoying the scenery, punch the throttle occasionally. Thanks for sharing your ride with us. I’m getting my DRZ400 ready for spring, I’ll never put ethanol in my bike again it gums up the carb really fast, now all I’m using is non-ethanol gas.

The exploring and adventure aspect of dual sporting is my favorite part of it too 👍

Love the drz. Im in my late 60s, Im cheap, and hate doing maintenance. Prefer the carb over FI, though wish it were a pumper, 5 speeds is fine, susp fine, even the weight is fine 90% of time. No one ever bitches about the handling. I think if one could get 50 lbs off of it, it would seem faster and snappier as well, but that seems impossible to do.

I think too many just look at the numbers and not get out and test ride these. I picked up a new 2023 “S” model last (year ago) spring and love it. Now I am just waiting for spring here in Alaska to ride it again.
Edit: On tires I am running Dunlop D606 front and rear with much better traction off road.

That's exactly what it is. On paper, this doesn't look like anything special, in reality, it's one of the best dual sports of all time

I come from a moto x background. Been riding my whole life. Drz is perfect trail bike for me. Sure it's not a gas gas or ktm husky but it's also not 13 g. I'm not out to break any world's records and nothing to prove to anyone. Drz is the ultimate Swiss army knife of street legal motorcycles. Get one while u can before bidens America makes them unavailable. Drzed forever!!!!!

Super fun bike to ride around. I'm loving mine. More than enough power for me.
A little tall which can make a beginner feel uncomfortable, and carrys its weight a little higher which makes it feel heavy leaning it over and picking it up. Also just OK gas mileage, not a super-sipper.
I wish 1st was a little lower. Not TW200 low, but lower. I am happy with 5th though so I'm not looking to change the sprockets. I'd just like 1st to be a little lower, or the ratios to be a little wider. I think it has the torque for it. Its got some "tractor factor" from the torque. The clutch is much more slippable with a broader range than my old TW200 and that usually makes up for when I want a lower low, but still, I want the same 5th and a lower low. :)

I am so glad I saw this video. I have been considering a klx 300 (with dreams of a 350 exf) and am so worried that the klx going to feel just as powerful as my little crf 80 aka gutless. As you mentioned so many ppl talk about the weight of this bike being such a draw back it took this bike off my radar even though every other aspect about this bike was calling my name... DRZ is top of my list now!

Good man! Yeah people see it on paper and write it off, but it is seriously one of the best dual sports out there

Go ahead and get the DRZ400. It’s the best dual sport for the money. It really doesn’t feel that heavy to me. You can get nice used ones for $4k-$5k. It’s a little tall but I have lowering links on mine. I am a little under 5’11” and the balls of both feet are on the ground. I am so glad that I didn’t buy the CRF300L or KLX300.

DRZ is "heavy" if you come from dirt bike background, light if coming from street bikes. KTM is a superior machine off road but at nearly twice the price. How much off roading you gonna do?

I think it wears it's weight a bit high.
Not much more weight than my Zero fx.

Did you do any of the carb mods? The 3x3 or JD kit?
It sounds a lot more snappier than my stocker.

My kind of rider..... "no way i'm taking that line on the right...no way" "JK... i"m gonna send it" ... the whole time you were evaluating, i'm sitting here... armchair quarterbacking.. yelling... "TAKE IT...TAKE IT.." HA
