Peak Cavern (The Devil's Arse) - A Caving Trip

- On Sunday 16th January 2011 deep in darkest Derbyshire a team of crack cavers from Dudley Caving Club go to probe the inner depths of a place that the locals refer to only as the Devil's Arse.
A video of a trip into the further reaches of the cave, the Far Sump Extensions, can be found at • Peak Cavern to Far Sum... .
I love that there are people out there crazy enough to explore caves and that each group leave ladders and chains and other things for whoever's next in the cave.
Plot twist: Maybe they never returned to take them back.... jk its nice cavers care for each other
Darc Gibson I’m guessing it’s caving clubs that have done it, and not just random past travelers. I’m pretty sure you have to pay to join the clubs and be allowed to go to the riskier areas.
They are so color ful hahah
It's the first strand game.

actually in this very same cave (Peak) lays the remains of Neil Moss, in the very same spot where he died.
Those jumping photos are honestly incredible, love the lighting
Flubber Life Thanks. We're got a couple of very good cave photographers in Dudley Caving Club.
If i was a caver I'd have a golden rule if i couldnt turn around in the gap i wouldn't go through it. I wouldn't be the greatest caver but I'd be smartest.
my thoughts exactly , you need room man ! , if my Butt won't fit forget that man !
I would be smart but not a caver
if I can't stand up and comfortably walk in a cave then I'm not going in
The people that explore those confined areas have a different mind set than I do. I could easily understand risking life and limb of their we're a sure fire reward for doing this, I mean a real reward like a natural cure for a disease, or gold or something. Other than that I don't know why anyone would want to do this.
Challenge, curiosity, being where few others go? Maybe it feels like another world & an escape from this 1, out've the heat & away from crowds & modern rush - Never fancied it myself, tho' I love Caves, but I kind've see the appeal more than some hobbies, like mountaineering or cooking or driving 4x4s to retail parks; people are very different! 😉
Thats a type of cave i'd like to explore too, nothing too tight and where is possible to turn. Yes
This one actually looked quite pleasant. Not too restricted, no big long crawls, and beautiful scenery. What a shame it's on the other side of the world to me, and I'll never, ever, ever, have to go there and see for myself.
I’ve seen another video of it and they definitely skipped a ton of the trek. Search “Neal Moss peak cavern” and go to the video of the cavers go to moss cavern to pay respects to the 20yr old who died waiting a flood out in there and the cavern was named after him.
@@iprobablywontseeyourreply.7193 Neil Moss died after becoming stuck in a vertical or near vertical tube off Moss Chamber. Don't know if rain had anything to do with it.
@@BRAWGWill i was a member of the bsa later tsg caveing club and knew 7 members of the rescue team that tryed to get him out he was suffercated by accsetalyne gas from his lamp it was 1956 the year i was born

Keith I watch ur tight squeeze caving vids for an adrenaline rush they never fail to deliver I will never understand how y'all have the guts to do this it's just amazing I'm in awe at the spots y'all squeeze threw
+WB Gaines Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Went there today, just on the standard tour. Crapped myself just having to kneel down a bit, there's no way I'd go that deep.
Hi Mark. This is the cave that really started it all for me. When the guide explained that we would have to turn back but there was lots more cave for experienced cavers to explore, I wanted to go on. We're back next weekend and hope to go underground into Speedwell and then into the bottom of Titan. Should be good. There may be another video if all goes according to plan.
@@CaverKeith where is the entry point to this exact cave mate? Feel like it’s a good choice for a first timer. Love from a fellow (Lower Gornal) Yam 😉
@@alexharmon5598 Hi Alex. It's right in the middle of Castleton and it's a show cave so is open to the public. Cavers can explore much deeper but only members of bonafide caving clubs can go beyond the show cave. If you want to explore it then you will have to join a caving club.
@@CaverKeith thanks for the info mate! I just moved to Glossop so will be sure to check out local groups. Many thanks and happy caving ♥️
You’re welcome.
Nope nope nope nope noooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would never have the balls to even attempt this but kudos to you guys and thank you for risking your lives so we don't have to
COD BRO even to get someone pregnant
Woah! Lets not go to far now.
Dj L. Why dont you thank people in the military that or veterans not cavers
Risking their lives for what lol? They do it for fun, no need to thank anyone
These caves are tourist attractions and extremely safe lol, just need to get over the fear and you'll love it
why am i watching caving videos when im too scared to even get in a elevator xD
Nick B same
Nick B it may be an indication
Same here
How can it be scary to go in an elevator you must be a n00b
I got stuck in and elevator for 8 hours. No Bueno
I did this trip today for the first time. We did almost exactly the same route you did in the video - along the streamway to Far Sump, then along Lake Passage to Ink Sump, except we didn't have time to go to Moss Chamber on the way back. Water levels relatively low today compared to in this video. On the way out in full oversuits, the public queueing for the next guided showcave tour must have wondered what they'd let themselves in for! Good video, thanks.
+RichardB1983 Hi Richard. Pleased you enjoyed the trip and liked the video. Have you seen my 'Far Sump Extensions' and 'Moss Chamber' videos?
+Keith Edwards (Caver Keith) I've seen the "Moss Chamber" one. I'll have to watch the "Far Sump Extensions" one. I'm guessing that's a fairly long trip then?
It is quite a bit longer and you have to go through Colostomy Crawl!
Keith Edwards
We did go and have a quick look at the Peak end of Colostomy Crawl and the completely silted up Treasury sump before we made it back through Mucky Ducks on the way back. Maybe one day!
'Colostomy Crawl'! 😂 *Our guide told us about the ongoing exploration & discovery in the cavern & I later saw someone in full caving gear heading past; fantastic! - I love that it's being kept 'alive' by people with enthusiasm, I prefer to stay in the open areas but it's fascinating to know what else is in there!
Love watching all the spelunking adventures you take and teach people about Keith!
Great videos! Always a good time watching them. Thank you sir!
Thanks Marauder. Pleased you like the caving videos. I knew someone did. :-)
Keith Edwards I love and enjoy your video too, I had some “caving for dummies “ in really easy caves when I was a young girl and watching at your adventures I can remember an old passione of mine. Unfortunately I can’t understand everything you say not being English mi first language

Beautiful cavern! ❤️ We're blessed with some fab. places in UK; many living here seem to forget the amazing things on our own 'doorstep'! Thanks for sharing; I'm fascinated with what's in there but the show cavern is my happy limit, so it's great for us armchair adventurers that some go further & post the footage! 😂 Keep safe
I think my favorite part was the cleaning ritual at the end! Great work ladies and gentlemen, what a cool experience!
I feel so claustrophobic when I watch this you guys are nuts. Very brave nuts!
I need to breath some fresh air.
Thanks for posting this! I am very much an "armchair caver". I've been down most of the showcaves in the UK, but have never managed to try "real caving". It is great to see the places that I have read so much about.
Robert - DL3RR Thanks for your comment. That is one of the reasons that I started making these videos. Also it was a tourist trip in Peak Cavern that made me want to try caving.
I went into peak cavern yesterday 5.11.15 and there was no water at all in the cave so didn't need to wear any wetsuits. Well the only water was some tricklin down here and there through the cracks and the floor was obviously abit damp. But a great tour of the cave none the less. Good coverage from the tour guide aswell, well worth visiting for a piece of history and experience too. Would be great to go back again sometime.
Wow, beautiful cave and scenery in this one!
This reminds me of my Minecraft caving adventures
Shivam Sharma love Minecraft I feel you
Try carry of minecraft play with miles of plugged cord from start to finish.
What amazing pheratic passages - and I love the backlit shots.
Hi Keith, this reminds of an exchange trip I once did between Jame's Hall over-engine mine and Peak cavern. We came out through collostomy crawl and were covered in liquid mud, so like your group we washed off our suits thoroughly before going into the show cave.
There we met a group of tourists who were excited to meet "real" cavers and to hear about our "historic" trip (it was the first time an exchange trip had been done). One of the tourists suddenly asked us whether it was muddy. Since we'd made an effort to clean our suits we were surprised and asked what had given us away. "Faces" they replied at which point we realised that whilst our suits were shiny and gleaming our faces were still masks of caked mud!
I've done JH to Peak several times and Titan to Peak. Both are classic trips.
One of my friends did his first abseil/SRT in Titan. And after only a 5 min verbal tutorial from me! I didn't go on that trip myself (although he was with some very experienced people) but I've claimed his success was soley down to my expert teaching ever since!
Keith Edwards do you think a trip caving will help with my claustrophobia ?
I really loved the jumping photos - beautiful!
SO COOL! And the pictures are simply incredible. Well done team!
We’ve been there during a trip and it’s definitely one of the easiest caves around uk. If you are a beginner, this one it suitable for everyone.
keith u are an absolute madman
Great video and looks like great fun!
KingOfHammer Thanks. It is! If you are interested there are more caving videos at ruclips.net/p/PL012F8D42FC6BCBDC.
I once went with three others into an aquatic cave on Mallorca, beautiful but dangerous diving into it.
Dear Mr.Keith Edwards...Would like to know if this section on the video is a do it your self trip or part of the commercial tour...???...Would like to do this in 2014 with memebers of my Grotto here in NYC...U.S.A. Thanks
I have been in a cave more than 1100 ft. underground. It was a tourist attraction I went to while on a short vacation.
I would die . Omg
Awesome. Gonna go into the deepest and presumably longest cave in Romania - I'm excited. Thanks for posting this!
Cool shots and a fun place, that Devil's arse; dark and wet as expected.
This is the most terrifying video I have ever watched!
I'm hoping to join my local grotto this next month and hopefully go on my first ever cave exploration!
Great stuff. I'm sure you will have a brilliant time.
12V 7.2AH CITBAT Battery panel is completed housed in my new tool box, toggle switch is added on the left bottom, the rest is easy. This can apply to cave exploration or emergency power supply unit.
It’s so late at night I’m just watching everything
It is a DIY trip. The show cave section is quite short and all of the video is taken beyond this section.
I love the black and white jumping photos taken in the thatic? tube. I live in the UK. Is there any way I could buy a copy? Beautiful work!
Hi Jo. If you send me an email I will put you in contact with the person who took the photos. My email address is at the bottom of the home page on the Dudley Caving Club website.
Keith
I’ve been here when it’s not flooded on the standard ‘tour’ (not caving just the wider open parts) really interesting.
It's much more fun beyond the show cave section.
Omg it's Mario! 8:21
ehh okey?
Makes me think of flamingo going like MARIOO MARIOO
@@marshmallowcoolboy5308 who is flamingo
Thanks very much. Good lighting makes all the difference.
It was a Sanyo VPC-CA9. I now use a Panasonic HX-WA10. Both cameras are waterproof.
one thing i've been wondering, are these suit waterproof?
Oh ive been there many times! I used to live there aswell!
Whats it like livin ina cave?
Garnizzle i mean lived in castleton! XD
really enjoy watching these videos!
Thanks.
Really nice footage and video, I know how hard it is to get these pictures.
Amazing ! Gonna check out that cave next !
Wasn't sure if I should watch this stoned. The choir music and psychedelic synths really helped, though.
Gotta love the budget Star Wars intro
Beatiful pictures.
That trip didn’t seem too bad, I’d hate any squeeze situations
this was my trip to peak =)
Awesome vid! What are those wet-suits (over suits) as you call them, I mean what name can I use to find them on the internet so I can purchase one?
+Starbuckin The over-suits are either PVC or cordura. We get them from caving shops in the UK. They come up from time to time on eBay.
Thanks.
I watched the Nutty Putty cavers in the US, this one in the UK is a walk in the park in comparison. Poor guy got stuck in a part of the US cave, they couldn't get him out, he's now sealed in cement. The "birth canal" part is horrendous
There's also someone 'sealed' in this UK cave, unfortunately.
Cool!! That's something you don't see in show caves. Thanks for sharing this exciting video :D
Yea....I'm not diving into any water unless I know for sure where the other opening is.
brilliant.... next? Alderley Edge Mines?... potentially one of the biggest tourist attractions in the north...
This is awesome! How does one get into this kind of stuff? Like if you're a beginner do you have an instructor go with you or what
The best thing to do is to find a local caving club.
Keith Edwards Thanks!
@dcrtuk Haven't people lost their lives in titan? Or was it the tour guide making it up?!
7:58-the wierdest orgy I have ever seen. "excessive indulgence in a specified activity."
Yep, great photography.
Many thanks!
I had no idea you could run so fast in a cave, it all seems so sleepery, even when not wet
Really great video!
Thanks.
Good Lord what some people will do for fun...... I've done some myself but never went underwater. Crawling and climbing. But I draw a line going under water. It's the unknown that's ahead of you that keeps you going. Its exciting to say the least. But I'm done, getting too old for this no more. Im too chicken, those days are over. Lol Gutsy you all are !!!!!!
Isnt that in Derbyshire? Wasnt allowed to go into that cave youre in. Only for a boat tour. Then we went for a Blue John cave tour. Id love this xD
It is in Derbyshire, in Castleton. The boat trip is in Speedwell which connects to Peak Cavern underground.
How comfortable are those suits you wear?
Was it too hot, too cold?
How do you go to the bathroom, in them?
Underneath the suits we all wear fleece onesies these keep us warm even when they are wet. Some of the more expensive onesies have zips that go all they way round the back.
Looks like so much fun!
@dcrtuk Amazing stuff. A guide told us that Peak is about a quarter of a mile long and beyond the rock fall at the end of the cave, they think there's another mile of undiscovered cave or something? Think that was right.
Hobittses!!!!!!
What would happen if you got stuck ?
I'm sure you will enjoy it.
I enjoyed that very much
I have done a lot of video in mines (nenthead) realising how hard it is to get decent results
Makes me even more impressed
That would be so much fun I would really love to go and do that
I would love to go caving but I'm not down with going thru extremely tight spaces
Did they find the gold or were they just paid a lot to do this?
"where do we go next?"
"The Devils Arse?🤔"
sounds good to me!
Most cave explorers don't employ "The Devil's..."
to promote a video. Evil has that work in-hand
and needs no solicitation. Ask for a blessing
as a higher power will help those who helped
their self.
I'm not using it to promote the video. It is the name of the cave. 😁
This is from the History of Castleton website:
The cave was originally called “Devil’s Arse” due to the flatulence-like sounds that emanate from within the caverns, the name was changed in 1880 to “Peak Cavern” in order to avoid causing the then visiting Queen Victoria any offence. More recently however, the cave has been promoted using its more traditional (and more vulgar!) older name.
Fantastic indeed.
Many thanks!
Very few cavers ever get stuck and if they do then there is always someone there to get them out.
Thanks Steve.
I went there today....had a wonderful time! =D
My question is: Who are these people? Where do they come from?
Can you tell me the name of the background song you choose for this video?
+Pocket Universe Hi. The track is called 'Underground Movement' from the album 'The Cave' by Pyramid Peak.
+Keith Edwards (Caver Keith) Thank you so much. Appreciated.
Great content. Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
This is amazing and how TF did people get ladders in there?????
In sections.
Beleza muito bom 👍👍👍👍👍
What happens is their lights go off because of the water ? Then how would they get out of the cave ??
1. Our lights are completely waterproof.
2. We have a head-mounted light each.
3. We all carry spare lights.
4. Just for the extremely rare possibility that something goes wrong, we always leave a call out time.
In spite of popular belief we are all very responsible people.
Thanks for watching.
Keith Edwards you guys are fucking awesome 👏🏼 and these videos are super entertaining!! Thank you guys !!!
4. 38 lol the fear, still i couldnt do that so hats off. Went yesterday cost me £48.00 for 3 kids 3 adults tour lasted 30 mins wasnt overly impressed with the price for what you got for your money.
I love to go in a big cave but not a small tight cave I’ll be fear to death.
It looks very cold and wet!
Is it good for rheumatism this cave?
This wasn’t so bad, kinda intruiging actually. Places where you have to crawl and cant turn around though, thats a huge nope.
What's the music playing in the background?
If you watch the video to the very end you will find out. 🙂
@@CaverKeith Haha sorry, made the comment before I finished the video! XD
Thanks!
Wicked! Great Video!
How do you know you have good air when in new areas or caves ?
Most cave passages have good air flow. Shortness of breath is using a good indication that there is excess CO2 and time to beat a retreat.
love caving just like you mate how about you make a video on suicide cave its not safe really but it was my first cave a couple of months ago and due to my partner not fitting past a choke point to the point where i had to stand on his head to get through i got into a slightly rounded cave where i had to turn back due to being alone and being that if i got stuck i would have never made it back out also you should try actual speed well cavern its so big you have to camp inside
sam hutchinson Hi Sam. Having read the description Suicide Cave doesn't sound very appealing to me! I've been into Speedwell several times. If you are interested one of my videos contains some scenes inside the further reaches of Speedwell. It's at ruclips.net/video/SkuLW-pwvfE/видео.html.
so your saying you have gone past the tour limits?? and i have subscribed to your channel but suicide cave is generally fun
Yes. There is a connection from Peak Cavern to the part of Speedwell beyond the show mine section. From about 4.30 the above video was taken in the far reaches of Speedwell. Perhaps I will look at Suicide Cave one day.
Keith Edwards some tight squeezes but can be done without ropes and was easy but a sep / ladder is needed
do you hsve facebook Keith Edwards
Standing impassable water is where I draw the line
I've been watching a few of these caving videos and i can't understand why they wear such baggy clothes and thick gloves and heavy boots? personally prefer to be wear something more slim fit, water proof still with an insulated lining of course. I'd feel restricted in what they were yano?
Spiderfly the layers are nice when you're going through water in those temps.
It also tends to double as nice protection from the rock. It's a little bulky but worth it for some caves imo.
I'm definitely a fan of just t shirt and shorts if it's somewhere I know and can get away with it
How are these things discovered
