I don't know what it is about Xerjoff's Tony Iommi Monkey Special that I just can't get enough of this fragrance. It's an easy reach perfume no matter the occasion, weather.....it just makes me happy from the moment I spray to the moment I wake up the next morning and can still smell it on my skin (that's right nearly 24hours later!!)

There is a reason Tony is referred to as the "Riff Master". A creative genius who helped innovate how guitar players approached the instrument. This fragrance lives up to the genius of its' namesake. 11/10 fragrance, another masterpiece from Xerjoff

Very articulate and complete review. I love this, so much , bought 2 bottles. I play guitar and collect fragrances, so this was a perfect match for me.
Dark, sweet incense smoke, fruity, rhum, but also has a lighter side that is not dominated.
I agree with you. There is not one note playing here that totally takes over. Very well blended, so you experience them all. Like a good group of musicians when they hit it just right, everyone in sync. I've been following Black Sabbath and Toni Iommi since the early 1970s. I really enjoyed your insights on the relationship between Sergio and Toni, plus the musical connection of the scent, wonderful. I have a live rock show this fall and plan to wear this... it will fit perfectly. Warm, inviting, non- offensive yet projecting and long lasting. ( It smells like a deep opium den dream that you don't want to wake from...very addictive. )

The story behind Iommi and the way that Sergio opted to change his design language to something more challenging definitely panned out for him with Monkey Special. But with Groove Xcape, it was pretty quickly evident that catching lightning in a bottle twice isn't that easy. I will stand on this opinion that Iommi will be among the greatest releases of the 2020s, sure it won't have mainstreamdom like a Baccarat or Aventus, but it will be in that tier below the mainstream niche for people who are true hobbyists, e.g. in tier with 2010 releases like Ani or Black Phantom or Side Effect.
One of my all time favourite frags. The opening minute of War Pigs is the audio version of this fragrance to me. Great vid Marcelo and excellent choice.

Love the song War Pigs (from the lyrics to the intensity of those guitars🖤)....musicians that were so far ahead of their time (it's awesome when magic like this happens).

This is such a glorious perfume and it fits so well with Tony Iommi, the opening is where it really gets me, the sweetness with the rose, rum, grapefruit and patchouli and it stays like that for a while. When it dries down it gets dark and smokey, the patchouli? (reminds me of Psychedelique by Jovoy), and the longevity is amazing.
My dad is a guitarist and played in bands a lot in his life and he mentioned always smelling like patchouli, having like a patchouli oil bottle.
I wore this to a rock concert half a year ago and it was just perfect in that environment, here this scent really boosted my mood that night.
I love how you mention the album Master of Reality, I didn't know it yet but listened to it while smelling Iommi, and also the Scent of the Dark track.
That contrast is what I love in music, perfumery, art and just everything really. Two of the songs I really enjoy on the album are Embryo and Orchid.
It is funny seeing my own comment from 7 months ago, how I sampled this and Torino22 and how they had already become favorites by then.

Being a Black Sabbath and Tony Iommi fan myself, I can only respect those who respect the living legend that inspired thousands of artists who decided to play heavy metal music having him in mind. @@TheNicheFragranceCollector oh it really is wonderful. The opening might be a bit too much for me to appreciate but i have given it time and i can really get the notes. The dry down is amazing i also do the thing you were saying and i spray the top of my hand and getting whiffs of it during the day really makes me smile. Oh and people notice this, even people who are not into niche. We have a few more weeks of cold weather here but i still think you can enjoy this at night time spring and summer, maybe a going out scent in the evening. But fall and winter you can wear it all day! I am going to be getting Naxos for spring/summer and Naxos is definitely a sweeter fragrance than iommi, in a good way of course! (Edit. I think you can only go wrong with this one if you don’t like cinnamon, if you don’t like the smell of leather in your skin and the discrete smell of patchouli on this. Those notes are prominent to me after an hour or two and I love them!)
I have a small decant… it’s a surprisingly fabulous scent. Addictive even.

Thanks for sharing your video, I have recently received my package from Xerjoff in the mail the other day. And I had purchased the Groove Xscape and it doesn't smells anywhere like the Tony Iommi with its smells of sweet caramel rum & honey vanilla , it smells more like a peck of pickled peppers that Peter Piper had just picked or being inside of a Subway sandwich shop..I know Xerjoff makes beautiful smelling fragrances, but that Groove Xscape is not one of them..

Thanks for the in depth setting of the scene. As for the scent, the ‘harmonious chord’ as you (almost) formulated it, is pushing hard. That chord keeps going and going and going. Sauvage Elixir is pushing a chord in the same way and it got on my nerves eventually , for Tony Iommi I haven’t made my mind up yet. And you really gotta love that chord since it is coming and coming for 7 hours at least…
Interesting that it lacks the 'harmony' for you....curious to know what in particular seems to stand out? As mentioned for me, nothing (in all those notes) takes the lead....but curious to know how this plays out for you🎶
@@TheNicheFragranceCollector Oh I would agree that no particular note stands out. In musical terms: a G7 is made with G, B, D and F. And that combo sure is harmonious. My point is you really got to love G7 here, since it keeps coming at you for a while at volume lvl 9.

Damn, Tony Iommi is just an incredibly beautiful fragrance. Definitely my top 3 of hundreds (600-700) I have tried.

I have to clarify. I don't have 600-700 fragrances in my collection, I have smelled/tried that amount. I do have around 210-220 fragrances in my collection though. 😄

Yes, Tony Iommi Monkey Special is an awesome fragrance. I had to wait for months to receive that one because it's not easy to buy it here. Luckily, I got a tester bottle for an incredible price so that's probably why I love it even more. 😄
But really, it is still one of the best in my collection. I would pay twice the price for that precious juice.
And if you think that you are obsessed with this fragrance, I must be obsessed too. It is just really that good. 🤣

Yes, I loved the music clip that they created. I was going to include in the review the 'Scent of Dark' song, but I had to cut it out of the final episode (to keep the pace on the episode correct)...but yes, the boys looked cool. I thought how happy Sergio must have been to be playing guitar next to one of his idol's....bucket list moment for him I'm sure.

I definitely like it - long lasting, and get's better the deeper you go into the dry down. It's an absolute pleasure to smell this on your skin the following morning. However I know it's all entirely subjective, but for some reason I'm torn over whether to keep it - there are other 'similar' frags I prefer more. I can't deny this is a very well crafted scent though.

@@TheNicheFragranceCollector Haha - don’t ask me Marcelo, your knowledge is next level! One purchase I’ve REALLY enjoyed recently though is Bois Imperial (Essential). I absolutely love it, and it is quickly becoming somewhat of a signature. It’s so clean, fresh and modern - one of those fragrances that genuinely makes me feel special in some way. It shares a lot of DNA with Ganymede of course, which is another top 10 of mine, but has an added sparkle and less minerality. I immediately got a backup, which I have only ever done once before (2 extra bottles of Torino 21!). Might be worth a pickup if you haven’t done so already. Take care Marcelo 👍
On a side note, I recently pulled the trigger on Reflection 45. Got it retail, which is something we NEVER do of course but you just can’t get it anywhere else without having to buy 1/2 bottles and decants. Nothing wrong with that of course, I just wanted a full bottle of the stuff!
Sampled this as soon as it was available in Australia. From first spray to 'okay, I'm wearing this now' in about a minute then ordered less than a day later (Libertine were only getting 30 something bottles and I didn't want to miss out). Well worth it, and I fully intend to add a backup in case the run ends.
Phenomenal fragrance. Excellent vid and description of it Marcello. The only issue I have with it is that I look at the 50ml and say 'how long will this last... really?'.

Believe it or not I've been wearing this fragrance now 3 days in a row😳 for me that's close to being an impossibility (all in commemoration of this episode coming out😎🖤)... hence why I have 2 bottles😬

In terms of what I think about it, I'm of the opinion that it's excellent, but a fair bit edgier than a lot of Xerjoffs which might explain the mixed reviews.
From limited experience (two wears plus two times just on an arm) I don't claim to properly understand it, but think I have the basic idea. The main accord that I'm picking up runs from the elemi at the top through the incense (some similarity to Zefiro in those two together) into the labdanum (primarily, but other amber as well) in the base. The labdanum is quite loud and animalic. The play between these is resinous, incensy, ambey, and crosses occasionally into sour and animalic.
The rest of the things in there seem mostly to be supporting and evening out that main, quite challenging, part (a little sweetness and earthiness from the benzoin and patchouli etc...). I don't properly have my head around it, and there's doubtless more going on.
I can certainly understand why there would be some dislike for it, as on casual observation (and likely some people's skin) it likely comes across a bit unpalatable.
Anyway, I may be miles off. I'll leave that sample at Oligarch for you. Certainly worth trying, as it is a bit different.
Oh boy, I am going down a very dangerous path with Xerjoff. I purchased Naxos at the beginning of December, and I love it. Just got La Capitale and it’s amazing as well. Finally Tony Iommi is back in stock at my favourite discounter and I ordered it right away, I cannot wait for it, love your description of it and all the Xerjoff fragrances. (Oh and I also picked up JTC 400, just to keep the collection going 😅)I don’t have anyone here in my city that sells Xerjoff, so I have been blind buying (which is a no no in your book) but Xerjoff seems to have hit the mark for me both times.

I have to admit that Xerjoff's are addictive; from the beautiful scents, to the bottle, to the packaging...they know how to tap into that 'addictive' brain🤩

Great fragrance 4 sure. It still reminds me of the original A men mugler. The star note for me in this fragrance is the cowhide leather. It does mesh well with the caramel; powerful stuff!
You have an amazing nose/sense of smell. The leather note only became apparent to me after sitting, taking time and breathing in the fragrance...but as a casual smell, I don't detect so much....nice work @HeadSpaceAudio👊🏽

I can definitely see the resemblance between Tony Iommi and A*Men.
I love both, but the extra complexity, performance, the passionfruit and rum notes, and the finesse are making me love it much more than A*Men.

Got it a bit after I got TUXEDO. Love it. Tuxedo I barely wear and their 125ml is because their atomizer sprays out so much. I layer it with ATH CARBON , because tuxedo fades on me I feel.
Tony Iommi love it. Smelled it in a sample I got when I ordered Alexandria 2/ Naxos.
Smelled it, wore it once, I’m like nice… smelled a bit like PDLN 3 , so I’m like Ight I’ll buy it. Of course it’s different. PDLN 3 by Roja is ANIMALIC but it’s nice and more of an incense rose.

Just sampled this earlier today at a department store and was immediately reminded of TF tobacco oud. When I got home I had a spray of that and I can’t tell them apart if I’m absolutely honest.
It’s very very nice and after 4 hours still going strong, just too similar (to me anyway) to Tom’s Tobacco Oud.
6 hours plus now and still performing incredibly well

I bought this bottle recently i notice its getting some short of leaks from the top its same with you?
I have only smelled on test card and thought it was good. I don’t have any locations around me that carry this. It would be a online buy. My worry is Ambergris, I seem to consistently dislike scents that have heavy Ambergris. How prevalent is that note ?
Is it redundant if i pick patchouli magnetik if i have iommi?

I received a sample today. It is really nice, especially the fruitiness. Apart from the fruit, it does remind me alot of Baraonda, though.

@@TheNicheFragranceCollector I have been testing Deified today, and I am several hours in. It is a completely different scent from the OG.
It opens up chemically fruity and rosy, similar to popular profiles like in Delina and Carolina Herrera scents. I am not a fan of this rose. Maybe this is what a Bulgarian rose smells like, but to me a real rose is deeper and sweeter, not soapy and sour.
Luckily the opening dies down quickly to reveal a dry leather. Think Cuoium. In the background some woods.
Eventually the leather softens up too, and you are left with a balanced blend of leather, a little sweetness, a little rose and some woods and earthiness. There is a patchouli coming through that reminds me of the dry down of Black Afgano.
It is unisex, safe, and nice. Just nice. Not bad, but nothing daring or ground braking either. I expected something more exciting.
This a well blended, mass appealing rose/leather, with a lot of competition. Not sure if the profile deserves a Xerjoff price tag.
The leather note keeps reminding me of Cuoium and Nudiflorum, which I find more interesting fragrances.
Was able to lay my hands on this masterpiece for a really good price (47/50 ml and full presentation for about 170 USD). This fragrance has already become my favourite. Really big fan of gourmand and patchouli fragrances. And as always, our very dear Marcelo, you have done an amazing review, really taking us on a trip about the fragrance. I have to correct you though. It is not first colaboration with an artist. In 2021 Xerjoff lauched "Save me" in colab with Brian May of Queen.

The Xerjoff Tony Iommi Monkey = Exactly Montale Intense Cafe. I have both. And its way less expensive.

I'm not really familiar with Herod....so personally not sure Juan. I'll see if I can get a sample of Herod and put them side by side (will report back🫡)
For me the 'hype' is real....I've become obsessed with this fragrance (I really can't understand why though?? But just riding the wave and enjoying it🏄🏽♂️)

Every time I hear about Tony Iommi, I have to tell myself like a mantra “no blind buy, no blind buy!!!”. I’ll try to wait until I’m in Milan to have a chance to smell it before splurging 😂
Good mantra to have (like a Zen master)....I work hard to practise this mantra when crazy sales come up (like Black Friday 😰). And yes, good approach with testing (and buying) in Milan😉
It smells great for an hour or so and then you MUST reapply. It has NO longevity. But it smells awesome.

Do you fancy this perfume on a woman? Or is it quite masculine?
I don't mean in any way to sound insulting. I loved the fragrance, but to me it smelled exactly like what a 50+ rocker would wear. Is it front loading in my mind because of knowing about iommi? Should I rethink it? Does it actually smell mature?
Ok so based on your comment; I'm going to assume that you're no where near 50🤔 and at a guess, you're in late 20's to early 30's...(I say this because at around that age, I thought of anyone in their 50's as OLD!!!👴🏽)

Truthfully, I haven't lined it up against Carlise (I don't own this one) so not sure....however I would definitely recommend that you test Tony out, to my nose this fragrance is ultra unique

For me this is easily an all year round fragrance. I don't wear it in high heat during the day, but yes as an evening fragrance in summer. But yes, it shines in winter and the cooler months🧡

I don’t like Hacivat either. It’s an oak moss bomb and that’s off putting to my nose. I regret purchasing a full bottle. I got caught up in the Creed Aventus alternative hype train several years ago. Hacivat doesn’t smell like Aventus IMO.
Tony Iommi Monkey Special is one of my top 5 Xerjoff fragrances. I’ve been wearing it and Xerjoff Starlight a lot this past Fall and this Winter.

I haven’t as yet. It takes a lot longer for these things to make it to our shores… however I have flagged this with the good people from Libertine so hopefully I’ll be able to get my hands on sample soon🤩

does it smell similar to oajan or angel share?
I haven't tested against Oajan; so not sure about that one. But in no way is it close to Angel Share....very different fragrance's.
For me the brandy/apple is a big player in Angel Share and it pretty much stays around there.
Whereas Toni moves and dance's all over the place but settles more into a patchouli boozy ambery place....really magical.

This is in a realm of its own. Not sure I would personally describe it as 'sexy' but it does have ambery notes, with boozy components....so yes, it could fall into that category.
I don't feel that it's masculine leaning. A woman can easily wear this too.
It's one that needs to be experienced and see how it 'speaks' to you....I would to hear from you once you get the chance to test

Sweet & Boozy: A Candy Harlot
I've written reviews for Xerjoff's NAXOS, and more lately Lubin's KORRIGAN, but this little delight...oh...
But IOMMI? This one's sweet, boozy, forceful and she's doing things to me, that I'm not entirely opposed to.
If I said to you that, for me, NAXOS was a continually complex olfactory adventure, and everytime I noticed that I was wearing it, by catching another wiff, that brought me something different again in the bouquet, I would not stray from the truth, and IF I said that KORRIGAN'S linear journey with high notes of Saffron, leather and oh, so many things... was a straight drive into nasal bliss, I again would not depart from the truth...
But, the sweetness of IOMMI, is something at once complex and linear in a way that I'm still not sure how I should tell you about it. It's sweet, but not floral, syrupy, and approaches, but doesn't cross into the dirty side of corruption, too sweet to taste like it's going to be good for you and promising that it's just bad enough to be enjoyed, thoroughly.
The notes higher in the bouquet; cinnamon, caramel and leather, for me, and maybe only for me, are the chief seduction in this ~ if you imagine SPICE BOMB, but with sweeter and easier to inhale gourmands ( the caramel screams for me to lick it ), that's riding on a bed of musk, and amber, and patchouli and that bed has a spread of Rum soaked sheets, dressed in vanilla, tonka and sandalwood pillow cases, I would agree.
Of course the bed is pulled along by two unicorns festooned with rose and geranium garlands, ridden by sweetly smiling, musky Candy Harlots, and I know I'm in love.
Sillage, and projection are potent, longevity at 5 hours is going strong

I personally do. Not in the heat of the day (we have very hot summers in Melbourne) but yes on a summer night....works beautifully🧡

Just recieved my sample today and I get why this is your favorite fragrance, it wasn't what I expected but it is devine!
I expected more patchouli but after 4 hours am still getting mostly rum, passionfruit and I think rose, but it is so well blended!
This is close to being a new favorite (I think it will be), also sampled Torino22 today and that one is also better than I expected, it is really unique.
I recently sampled a fragrance that's now my new favorite, which made me go wow! Will comment on your video on that one soon

@TheNicheFragranceCollector This is magic indeed! The only thing I like less is that the drydown is dry, which is also true for Clive X and 1270 which I both love too. But the opening is Pure Magic for sure! Will wear my new favorite tomorrow while watching the Maté talk with Mr Marzano and comment then!
