  • We finally get the Tamiya TT002D DriftSpec Nissan Skyline GTR R33 complete! In this part 4 of my build guide, we complete the bodywork. Cutting out, masking, painting and applying the decals is all explained and the final car is revealed. I had a lot of problems with the spray job, but hopefully we can sort them out! Thanks to Rob Brennan RC for his assistance with the paintwork!
    Hopefully this build will feature in the Stevo D 313 Build-off #11 Visit Stevo's awesome channel here: / @stevod313

    Great "save", guys - you´d never tell by looking at the photos that you had a bit of a nightmare with the paint at first.
    With the wing and stickers on it looks terrific - and I agree that the front end looks properly mean with those headlights glaring "Out of my way!"

      Thanks Del! Yeah, that was lucky, I really didn't think we were gonna get it too look so good, it was very much "fingers crossed!" Yeah, the stickers and wing really finish it off well, and I have always liked the style of the Skyline bodywork, very aggressive! Cheers for the great comment my friend! :))

    Hi Mark. This series has been extremely informative for me in so many ways, (and this could be the longest comment you've ever received lol). Could you tell me where you got your curved scissors from please. They actually look like nail clippers. I have a pair of proper RC curved ones which are nice and sharp, but the blades are longer than yours and I can't do a complete cut around arches like you've done with your smaller ones in this video. Thanks for showing that mate. Always very useful for someone like me taking their first steps into "Bodywork". Also thank you for showing the tip about removing a strip from the centre of the window masks before applying them. I have a body to paint (not Tamiya) which has the masks, but they don't have this advice written on them. I wouldn't have thought to do that if you hadn't shown it. You have also given me more confidence about painting by showing that if something goes wrong, it can be rectified. My heart sank when I saw how bad the red paint looked at first, and thought you would have to replace the body, or go for a random rat/weathered look. But it's turned out great in the end, and to be honest, I couldn't believe how good it does look. I am itching to get on with some paint jobs I have, but I can only do them outside, or in the garage. The garage isn't "weather proof" and does suffer from a little damp during the winter months, so after watching your experience with this paint job I think I will have to be patient and wait until spring to do mine. I actually referred back to one of your other videos in this series the other day while I've been building my TT-02B. While I was reading the instructions before fitting the shocks I remembered thinking that your chassis has 5mm ball connectors to mount your shocks on. I checked the video to make sure because I have a pack of 5mm brass ones that I bought last year to replace the step screws on my DT-03's. I never got round to it so I've used them on my Plasma instead. They're so much better than the step screws, and add a bit of "Bling factor" with the tiny bit of shiny brass here and there. Ok, I have some decals to apply and my Plasma will then be finished , so I will wrap this mammoth comment up by saying what an awesome job you have done on this Skyline, despite the highs and lows, and you have finished off this series with a set of beautifully taken photographs. Many thanks again Mark. You have been a big help and an even bigger inspiration my good friend. 😊👍👍

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 года назад

      Hi Derek. I am really happy that you found this video series useful, so good to hear mate! Yes this a book rather than a comment! I love it though. The scissors are actually nail clippers, you are correct, my sister bought them for me ages ago in a manicure set, so not sure where they came from, but you are right, the shortness of the blades makes them perfect for wheel arches. I don't know what I would do without them!
      As for mistakes - make them! We are all human, and mistakes is how we learn (speaking as a teacher now!) Do not be afraid my friend, have a go and what the hell - it is only a toy car, and we can always put it right, or at the worst, start again. Over the years I have learned to just have a go, I initially worried a bit about showing my mistakes on YT, but then I am no expert, and don't pretend to be, I think that all of us in this hobby need to be honest and show how it really is. The "polished" super smooth builds and mods on YT are hiding all the errors in the edit! Have faith my good friend, you have so many talents and your videos are so good, keep doing what you are doing - the last "distracted" vid showed me there really is a side of you that says "Am I bovvered!!!" Love that Derek! :))

    i think my body paint will turn out great. i used Tamiya 89919 metallic wine red for the body with a silver backing to solidify the color. white made it too bright and black made it darker but muddied up the luster. i used regular paints on a scrap body shell piece to test the best backing colors. grey was fine but silver seemed to retain more metallic flake by a small margin. the hood and bonnet went gun metal grey with black backing. there are some minor cracks not completely filled in ie the front bonnet lip and slight over spray on the rear "rocket" fins where taping off got a bit difficult.... i decided to just make the spoiler semi gloss black and put the CF sticker on it. i just shot 1 coat of white on the spoiler and then go semi gloss black (TS paints). i dont have a PS silver so that the next thing i will buy this thursday. i havent done the electronics yet, procrastination on my part...
    that carbon fiber sticker really is annoying, i put mine on backwards and cant bother to fix it... i did use a black gundam marker to make a CF effect on the small edges that the sticker didnt end up covering.

      Hi Kimberly - nice to meet you! Thanks for the comment. I sprayed the windows with Tamiya PS-31 Smoke. It's really good as long as you spray very light coats. Good question! The main differences are:
      Oil filled CVA shocks
      Full ball bearings
      Sport Tuned motor
      Alloy motor heat sink
      AW grease for stiffening the diffs
      Driftspec tyres
      It's a good spec, and if you change the tyres it makes a great road or rally car, well worth the money and saves on upgrades to the stock TT02 - a good buy in my opinion. :)

    Looks great mate. Good info about the problems of painting when it's damp. A bit of a problem this time of year unless you have an indoor area with an extractor like Rob's. Glad you managed to save it. Backing with silver always a good plan with bright colours. Look forward to seeing how you get on with drifting but I'm predicting a set of rally tyres going on this before too long. With the window smoke paint do you find that it ends up a bit diffused as well as tinted? I always find that it's a bit blurry to look through. Not a problem unless you wanted to put the camera inside to make a vid. Just wondering if it's my crap painting skills. I do think that it looks better if you haven't got a cockpit in the car as it hides all the gubbins. Anyway, nice one matey :-)

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 года назад +1

      Thanks my friend Pete! Yeah, lucky I got a mate with spraying facilities indoors! The condensation I had when outside made the paint just glide around on the surface, never seen that before, more like paint dipping than spraying! I found the drifting almost impossible mate - I get one corner right and fail on the next - EVERY TIME :-/
      So Rally Blocks at the ready. Hopefully got a nice rally shell coming from Time Tunnel. I have had problems with a blobby smoke finish in the past, but this time the paint came out very finely and looks quite even. Yeah, I went with the smoke as a rally cockpit would not suit this body. Thanks for the great comment, catch ya later mate! :-)

      @@MarkBryanRC ah so you came to the same conclusion about drifting as I did. Sort of fun for a bit. As previously discussed those very shiny hard tyres are only any good on a very smooth floor. One thing I once did was to put some electrical tape around some road tyres and it was a better drift experience than those ones in the kit. Obviously they don't last forever. Hey after all my masking woe with the Konghead body I had a look back at your video where you did yours in hope of tips. Unfortunately you had already taped it up off camera. How on earth did you get the tape accurately in the little silver fuel tanks (I think that's what they are) on the side. You even managed to leave the little straps uncovered. I did it the other way round and did the silver first and put the tape round the shape. Didn't bother with the straps. If you have any top tips then it could be the subject of a video. It's only relevant to ones with complicated shapes in a different colour. For instance I was doing a Mini Clubman body and wanted to tape up the grille. It's sort of ok but I've gone wide of the lines. Like I say any tips gratefully received. Cheers mate 😀

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 года назад +1

      Hello mate! Yes, I think drifting is best left to the experts, I don't have time or inclination to master it - bashing is way more fun, and I can drift a rally car on gravel just fine!
      As for the masking, I just pressed some ordinary masking tape as far as I could into the crevices and made sure the tape was pressed completely flat on the edges of the area to be sprayed, then used a very sharp blade to trim around those edges. That's how I cut the tank straps out. Very fiddly, but doable! So my tip is, overlap the tape, overlap the shape to be masked and trim off the excess! Cheers mukka! :)

      @@MarkBryanRC that's a great tip and something I haven't done before. I tend to use those knives where you break a bit off when it gets blunt. Not sure if they are sharp enough even when new but I'll have a go next time I have some tricky masking. Cheers mate 😀
