Every year, a score of old school nitro racers and fans make their pilgrimage to a historic track in Bakersfield, Ca. Their objective is to kick off the NHRA's Heritage Series in grand fashion.
Every Thursday is reserved for sportsman qualifying, but for one session in the afternoon, the fuel cars are turned loose for testing and tuning with the goal of winning the heralded March Meet trophy. Tune in as we present a heaping helping of fuel cars from Funny Cars to front-engine Dragsters to the wildest of them all Fuel Altereds.
Mike Peck (Funny Car) and Dan Horan Jr. (Top Fuel) paced the first session.
Be sure to download the CompetitionPlus.com mobile app; its a free download at the Apple Store or Google Play.

You wanna know how I know it’s a good day?
Because I’m watching nitro cars on a Friday morning with my coffee.
Matthew Schiess hey, I’m a week later but doing the same with tea and croissants here in the damp and virus plagued UK!
Matthew Schiess Correct !
Watching Nostalgia Funnycar, eating tacos, and a sunset. Yup, I died and went to heaven!
Pan to the scoreboards next time on each pass so we can see the ET and MPH!
We do on race day, not always in test and tune.
Ron Capps driving that blue Fiat altered at the end. Too cool!
silenceisconsent well let me correct that.
Great seeing Chris Davis AA/FC. He’s from Spokane WA and next month (April 17-19) he’ll be at the Spokane Speed and Custom Show for the 4th year straight. He’s one of a handful o nitro machines that roll outside the building to fire up for the crowd. It’s a great show, don’t miss it.
The NHRA Heritage Series has definitely been added to meets to attend
Thanks for showing this Competition Plus. Without the livestream, going to really miss this event this year. (long trip from U.K. but I do want to witness it live sometime).
Love watching the old front engine rails run.
I just left mariposa to go get my car ready for the race season. One year I will actually make it to this epic event!
Sure brings back memories of seeing Don Garlits, Connie Kalitta and others at the old Detroit Dragway in the 60's. Also Wild Willie driving the Winged Express at Windsor Dragway. God I'm old !
These F/C and rails are my all time favorites love to watch and hear them go!
Oh yeah! I’m in the UK but watched these kind of cars race in the 1970s and 80s as a kid with my Dad at Santa Pod Raceway. Fantastic performance from the slingshots!. Great to hear the Lenco two and three speeds being slammed under full power on some of the cars. Missing the bunny hops into stage from the funny cars though. Nice video, thanks for sharing.
I'm getting ready to head down there today.. I'm in Fresno getting ready now
This brings back such memories ☺️als you need is the little red wagon an rat fink🤗
Everything we need to see and hear.. I go fridays every year just to feel the power.. Thanks
Wow, the best I’ve seen. No bsing, just racing.
That just made my day...Thank you very much Bobby and Jake for doing such a fantastic job.
Enjoyed the old school cars especially the dragsters, and fuel altereds,
Thanks for posting the video, Great work. I miss being able to attend the March Meet since I moved to the east coast.
This is some of the best footage yet!!! (Im laid up in bed and enjoying the heck out of it!!)
PS: I hate to admit it, but I couldn't have filmed it better!!!
Sincerely,
Jim "Petty"
Beautiful machines! Thanks competition plus 👍
Thank you for the video wanted to be there this year
wow lotta new cars ...great runs and excellent coverage ,,and it was just Thursday !!
McEwen wins Bakersfield!
March 1972 Headline in National Dragster.
3 guys in Ottawa Canada eating our lunch in a third floor corridor in high school following our beloved sport before cable channels, the Internet and social media.
Places like Bakersfield and IRP were legendary places to us even back then.
The best drag racing around!! Wish it was closer to Ohio
Lots of cool cars but they seem to be getting away from their roots. I don't remember there being carbon injectors in the 60s.
Great stuff. Man i miss This.
Great footage, cheers from the UK!
That was totally Bitchin! Much better than 330mph bracket racing over at NHRA !
Great footage BUT, TIMES, TIMES, TIMES are important!!!!Thanks.
FrankKunkel - the elapsed times are in the qualifying videos- this was just testing.
Awesome !! Thanks for making my day !!
Must be lots `o naughty hombres around when they advertise COW-BOY BAIL at the dragstrip!
Its Bakersfield.....
true story
I still have my ticket stubs and tee shirt from the 1966 Fuel and Gas Meet. Times have changed though.
@Stephen Newman I bought a repro back in 90. It looks like the graphics on the ticket stubs. I was there at 16 and saw the first wrinkle wall slicks tested. I do have an original tee from Lions along with two trophies. :-)
@Stephen Newman Well the 16 inch tall one was for running in class, (I forget which class), with my friends '70 Maverick. The shorter one was for Et Brackets with my '59 Austin Healey 106 with a 350 Chevy drive train.
Those were the daze.
@Stephen Newman Yah. Lions closed in 1972. I was there for the "Last Drag Race" as one of the magazines called it.
Is nitro America back from the dead??
Is les Mayhew going to stick it to NHRA and make those BADASS videos again?? So many questions ! THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!
11secghia - Les left us and went to work for the NHRA
but we all learned a lot from him!
Famoso. The once and future important drag strip.
Coronavirus sent me here...just watching old races.
Old school is so COOL😎
Ok now where did you put the mikes transmission run, why is there no passes for that car, come on pal, let’s see some mikes transmission runs, thanks BigAl California.
Were the Bartones there?
3:58 ... "here, hand that to me" ... "just get out of my way"
I agree with rat107-pan to the scoreboards-we want to know what they run-something tells me the camera person is just a hired tv reporter that is oblivious to drag racing
Capps steering the Topolino?👍😎
I'm from Australia.... We still run 1/4 mile... Is the still 1/4 for this event?
Thank you for the video
I can't be sure but the panic car looks to be running iron heads.
Didnt notice the EGR plugged in))
WOW MARCH MEET....NUFF SAID
Who was next to Ron Capps?
Is that the best on the camera angle ?
To "my eye" it appears that the AA/FD's are running a much narrower slick than what the Funny Cars and AA/FA's are running. Can anyone tell me why that is?
Music to my ears!!
Thank you❗👏🏽
love love love weeeeeeeeeeeeee
They are running ONLY in the sixes.man where are we now.
Does anyone know the percentage of nitro they use?
This is the best. Not like that NHRA crap- yak yak yak is all they do.
You skipped a couple cars..........
Seriously? Ya can't even show the E.T's on the board? THEN WHAT'S THE POINT.
Howabouthetruth - well sometimes you get what you pay for :-)
I thank you for your vid, But gee mate,, show the times, its half the run to know the times, and as you linger so long on the end of each run you could very easy do this, you did on some.... Eddie Australia.
Eddie Brown - It’s testing. Well at the time there were no sheets available - all of the times are on qualifying and elimination videos.
@@CompetitionPlusTV thanks for your reply, testing, maybe, but still nice to see what they are running..lets face it, its no more effort, and you make us all happy... again thanks for the coverage, i watch as many as i can...
How many people don't know the difference between a spark plug & a hemorrhoid ?...Just count the thumbs down .
Now that's cool shit!
Ni-tro-meth-ane!
good news car weeeeeeeeeeeee
TREE & TIME .........later
WOW
