- This is me reacting to, analyzing, and talking USA Volleyball passing from a 2019 match between USA and Poland. In this video I strictly watch serve receive, talking about technique and how we can be better. If you have any comments or questions please leave them below in the comment section :)
I know this video is a little rough and choppy, and has a lot of technical terms going on. I promise to get better at this sort of video in the future!

I’m a smaller player and getting a dime pass off a tough serve can feel just as good as a big kill or block.
I so agree! I mean...I don’t hit or block 😂
Lmao and then you hear someone from the crowd say ‘great pass’, feels good...
@@ErikShojivolleyball how well do you thjink these two saves are?
ruclips.net/video/ttaGLodb1Kw/видео.html
Digging a spike is more satisfying to me than hitting a powerful spike
@@akhilmohan6461 Honestly I feel the same way. Spiking is awesome but making a perfect set, or doing a cool receive feels so much cooler in my opinion.
As a libero trying to become a regular, I feel like I am cheating by being able to learn from one of the best. Thank you, hi from Romania, and keep the content coming. It's great!
Wow thank you so much for the kind words. More videos to come! Hope all is well in Romania!
6:43 “what am I doing? 🥴” - literally me all the time
somewhat comforting to hear even pros question themselves when rewatching their plays
Didn't realize it was already past 10 mins when you do the closing, i really like it when you talk about each players techniques and their strong points, keep up the good work! Congrats on your 1k subs!

Thank you so much! I’ll be posting these kinds of videos every so often so stay tuned! And thanks for watching!
So awesome you're doing these videos - I played libero for college club, and you and Morgan Hentz were my biggest inspirations in the game! Keep killing it and stay safe!
wow thank you so much!
Love the analysis and insight into what you look out for in a good pass. Thanks for posting this!

Thank you so much for watching and commentating! More videos to come!
Love it! You explained it well that I can imagine how it should be done
The last point you made was something I really needed to hear! I’m new to volleyball and I want to be a Libero, I didn’t realise how important it was to move your feet but it makes sense❤️ thank you for the video!
Keep working you got this! Feet are SO important. Thanks for watching!
Hey no worries. Your analyses are great. And those advices are very helpful for aspiring volleyball players to improve their platform and their passing skills as a whole. Thanks so much.
Sooo cooooool!!, man this is insane, you’re talking about leg and foot movement with the positioning of shoulders and how that effects the height and strength of the ball while also giving attention to falling, im starting volleyball in april, like just starting, and I’ve really been trying to absorb as much information to prepare me to make sure I can get on the team and just seeing how all these little details matter is real useful. you truly are a pro shoji
thank you so much! yes there are a lot of details but you can do it! you got this!
I love the technique discussions and how you approach each play. Thanks!!
Thank YOU for watching! More videos to come!
Thank you for this video, I’m a libero too and now a big fan of you! You inspire me
So cool to get insight from one of the best. Can’t wait for more!
Thank you so much! Tell all your vb friends and teammates! 😀😅. More videos to come!
Thank you! 🙏🏽 I really want to work on my passing and appreciate your input. I’m a big fan of your playing by the way!

Will try it out and keep you updated :D
Thanks for the great analysis!
I subbed instantly. I'm so glad I found your channel
Just discovered your Channel and i totally love it !
Cheers from France 👍👍
Love this! I'm an OH that they only really used for hitting since my passing isn't the greatest. I've never really been coached on passing or serve recieve so I really appreciated this video 👍
I love defense so ill try to keep these things on my mind! Thank you
thanks for watching! keep working I know you got this! more videos to come!
Yasss!!! This is what I have been waiting for!❤️ Im a fan from the Philippines 😁
Thanks for watching!! More videos to come!!
Oh My...😲
do yall know how long I been waiting for a indoor Olympic player to make a RUclips channel. 😭
Hey Erik! Thank you for this video and I want you to know that I look up to you. I am also a libero and I am very eager in improving my skills in receiving and digging. Keep safe and love from the PH 🇵🇭♥️
oohh I'm learning, love your vids Erik!
Thanks! I’m glad you’re learning! 😀
I'm trying to clean up my passing as a defender/hitter. thanks for this content. this is really helpful. I only went partway but will complete it at lunch time. thank you
So much love and idolism from the Philippines❤
Been watching your matches here on RUclips and I am a fan of you, Matt, Maxwell, Micah and Aaron ❤
Hoping to see you play LIVE 😍❤
Keep it up lodis ❤
Love you shoji 😁
This is awesome. I learned more in 12 minutes than I have attending clinics.... Well done Erik. Keep them coming.
Wow! Thank you so much I’m glad you found it helpful! More to come!
Would love you to make a video about setting too! Congrats on 1k ❤️
I might! We’ll see thank you so much!
First day of finding your vids, this stuff is good! I play for about 15 years now and it's really helpful to have a pro player analyse these movements for me.
If you consider this a not so good video I cant wait to find out what you do call a good one!
Thank you for watching! 😀
So glad to see you opening a new channel, Erik! Hope to see more reacting, tutorials or even do some go pro footage of you actually playing??
Thank you so much!
this is such incredible advice, thanks for this. receiving is easily my weakest skill and this helps a ton with it.
Keep working you got this! Thanks for watching!
Pure gold! Love to nerd out!
Thank you for watching!
Hi I'm a fan from Philippines❤️ I'm a volleyball player too but I am not a professional 😂 this video is a big help for someone like me who's just still growing and learning the game. More power to you 👍
Thank you so much for your support and for watching! 😀 more videos to come!
Hey Erik,
it's a pleasure to see you on your own channel. I will probably watch every single video to soak up the expertise you provide. However, could you explain what makes Nishida such a good server? He had by far the most serve aces in the world cup. But for me it seems like he just does the same serve all the time.
Your voice is so soothing godamn
Love this content! Would love to hear about that little hop/split step every receiver takes just before the serve. I think it’s not taught or emphasized often but you can definitely tell how coordinated it is at this level.
Thank you so much for watching! I will do more videos in the future and hopefully will remember to talk about that 😀
Thanks a lot sir Eric for your tips😊
Great video! Pls do a part 2🙏🏻🙏🏻
This video really helped me out ✌🏾😎
yay! im glad! thanks for watching!
your team plays at the highest level i love volleyball
Just found out that you have this channel. Idk what I've been doing during this time
Hahaha don’t worry I just started! Thanks for tuning in 😀
I m manmeet from india ... I love your effort n your energy in game and same energy u r showing in making video on RUclips.... I m big fan ...
Great video. I’ve always tried to watch serve receives but I could never really figure out what was good/bad about a pass.
Your analysis and insights makes understanding what’s a good habit vs a bad habit a whole lot easier.
I’d love a video on how to dig/receive fast serves/spikes. How do you absorb energy from hard spinners? And do you think about taking spin off the pass to make the ball easier to set for your setter?
I really like Your tips about volley 🔥
thank you so much for this!!! i played at my middle schools volleyball club and i'm just a beginner but i really like being on the court and receiving :D i was gonna try playing at our highschools club this year but unfortunately (but necessarily!!) all sports had to be cut off this year. im gonna be practicing and watching ur vids in the meantime!!!
thank you so much for watching! keep practicing and playing when you can! :) more videos to come!
ahh - passing. this is where I need the most help. lol thanks!
btw, if you want to boost your hits/views, just do a reaction video with Haikyuu, or teach people how to jump higher. :D (I'd love to hear how Team USA trains btw, if that's something you could share)
hi just found this and its awesome i would love more videos explaining detailed plays and why or how move and how to improve our technique in defense or passing love and cheers from argentina!
I love how you are cheering on your teammates from an old game, where you know the outcome, and they can't hear you.... hahaha, you're an amazing human
I just like how this video has no dislike. ☺️ Btw I’m also a libero. You’re such an inspiration Shoji. 😄
Yay liberos! Thank you!
Great to hear you talk about a more underrated aspect of the game! Most people get too obsessed with training spikes that they forget about the fundamentals
Thanks for watching! Passing is so important!! 😀
@@ErikShojivolleyball Keep up the great work on these videos!
That synchronized split step is 7:38 soooo clean!
I really liked this video. Can you speak a little to what you do BEFORE the ball is served? Is it all about scouting? Knowing tendencies? Watching arm swings? etc. Keep the videos coming!
Thank you! I am hoping to make more videos about passing but in short...before the pass...communication, tendencies, watching the server. All of it! 😀
I’m a poor passer and wish I’ve seen this video ages ago. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much! Keep working you got this!
Amazing Content !!! if you continue reacting to matches, you should react to the 5 set thrillers in Austin this past week.
Thanks for watching! I will take a look for sure!
You should do a day in the life!! Keep up the great content :)
I’m too much of a newb to do something like that 😀
bro this video is fucking brilliant
Thanks for the masterclass for receiving!
Wondering if we can have the one for defensing :)
I will in the future for sure! 😀 thanks for watching!
Whoaaaaa. I only found out today that you have a youtube channel. Definitely subbing and looking into your other videos.
Thank you so much for subscribing! Hope you enjoy!
Literally, now when I saw your RUclips channel I’m like automatically clicked the subscribe button.
Yay! Thank you so much and thanks for watching!
@@ErikShojivolleyball 😱😍
My idol❤️❤️
Thank you so much for your support!
apart from what you are teaching, I kinda understand why there are different styles(features maybe?) from different players when it comes to serving.
one of the reasons is probably for the opponents not easy to get used to the rhythem.
keep up the good work please! Even though I have watched your games many times in live, it's great for me to get to see your other side when off the court. Cute and Smart!
That is a cool jump float sever
I hope u can make videos about national teams about their strengths and weaknesses
Great video loving these insights. thanks for sharing, if you could move the camera so we could see the servers hand next time❤️
Thank you! I will try to adjust my video!
Hi Erik, my name is Isa, I run a Volleyball club in Utah. I was just wondering what passing keys/terms you use when helping younger athletes and what has helped them build their foundation to learn other skills/fundamentals more quickly. I love this video and please keep making more!!! I hope you don't mind me using some of your sayings to help the athletes remember things faster.
thanks for watching! keys: feet, early platform, hold platform. also shoulder over and level eyes. shoulders should be dipped towards target and you level eyes meaning not a whole lot of up and down! more videos to come!
Hi Erik! How about a video of your personal top 5 liberos other than you? 😊
Key to passing is to do what you can to create platform with your forearms to direct the ball to the target. Sometimes you have to bend your arms, drop shoulders, drop to knees, do 180, do the split :)
Great analysis! Can you also go over digging hard driven balls?
You are one of the Best Libero in the world🥺✊🏻I hope we can meet someday and you can teach me some volleyball skills😊... LODIII!!
Thank you and I hope so too! 😀
dont know if anyone else noticed this but at 7:52 you can see everyone in the backrow taking that first split step jump at the same time, thought that was amazing and so funny
Love your videos. Please if you can make also content about training, weight lifting, nutrition and eating and generally thoughts and mindest of a professional volleyball player. It would be very helpful to see various days like matchday, offday, preseason, inseason of a pro player!
Thanks So much for watching and thanks for the suggestion. I think for now as I am just starting I will stick to watching vb videos and talking about that. I’m too much of a newbie to do anything else 😂. Hope you keep watching! 😀
@@ErikShojivolleyball yeah I understand. I just give you a hint 😉. Keep up the good work, you deserve everything because you have work so hard as I learned from Aloha Fridays with Micah. Good luck with your team, hope to achieve your goals! 👊
Thanks so much! Aloha Fridays was my brother and Micah! Haha. Thanks so much for your support!
Thanks so much! Aloha Fridays was my brother and Micah! Haha. Thanks so much for your support!
Porfavor mas videos como este :(
Nice Bro
Hey Erik! Sorry I'm late to the party. I was wondering what your take is on finger/overhead vs. forearm passing on float serves - in what situations/serves (if ever) do you overhead pass? I play at a semi pro level and have always struggled somewhat receiving float serves. My coach and some teammates are telling me to finger pass more but I'm not convinced that's the answer. Thanks!
hey, I love your video very much. Would love to hear about the japanese team defense from you too
Thanks so much and thanks for watching! Great idea!
Where did you found the footage from this angle? I love it! Nice video too!
hi mr erik your team is my favorate team in the volleyball i really like some of your digs and i like the setting of micah and ilike some beautiful swing of matt anderson.im playing the app of volleyball world tournament im always getting the team of usa. i like playing volleyball but im a shortman.im playing volleyball 2.i hope to see you guys.
Great content! When receiving float serves, how much of the power comes from using the legs vs arms? Any advice on passing with your hands? My hand-reception tends to go straight forward/being too low
Thank you so much! You shouldn’t necessarily need power, but your legs and platform should be solid. I know that doesn’t really help. But if I had to choose between using my platform or using my legs to help get the ball to target I would use my platform. With hand passing, extend up not towards target.
Hi! Great video, it helped me so much. I can’t decide where the ball will go when someone is serving and i have to wait for it to come to my side of the net to get to it. Can you tell me if that’s wrong and what should i do?
When libero is least paid position so you gotta be active on RUclips and social media to make the difference 😭 respect
Make more like this please i suck at passing :(
As a libero, I’ve always struggled with finding the right shoe for me. Can you make a video on what shoes you recommend for indoor volleyball?
Honestly I’m not an expert. Find any shoe that’s stable and is comfortable for you!
Go to a store with someone that has knowledge on it. The store I go to in Amsterdam has someone that takes time to find what model shoe best fits your foot's width and length and all that. In essence you've got to not be able to move around much in the shoe in any direction.
Plisss Erik react to the Final of Italian Cup, Perugia vs Civitanova... is an crazy game
Thank you this is awesome, I also love your blog! As an OH2 I have to serve receive from left back a lot, do you have any tips for that? I think my big problem is that I'm used to playing middle back defense so I push the ball a little far, I believe I need to get lower and drop my right shoulder more but I figured I'd ask!
thank you! keep working on your angles and seeing what works for you. a lot of the time from left back you'll need to drop your right shoulder to create an angle to target!
@@ErikShojivolleyball thank you for the reply! I have another question regarding passing! Do you prefer the hand in hand style of platform or the half fist cover style of hand placement? Does it just come down to comfort?
I was a Volleyball player for about 4-5 years but I have dislocated elbow so if I received a ball I must be careful because It might misdirect my receive btw thank you for this tips Shoji♥️♥️♥️
Be careful! Thanks for watching!
I didn't know that was 10 minutes already. More videos to come.🙂
Thanks for watching! More videos coming!
I know that you are libero but could you analize setter :) probebly the best , Micah. Thank’s !!
I am very touch by this video cause I have a Passing or receiving problem, As a professional libero like you haha, how can you give advice/motivate those athletes who have been suffering like my problem haha hopefully you will reply these heheheh 🙏✊😊
