  • When a Ukranian oligarch bought a London penthouse in 2014 for £140m it became the capital's most expensive flat, 800 times more expensive than the average house price in London. With London prices beyond most normal people's reach, luxury shops filled with goods most people can't afford, what has happened to the make-up of the capital and how was it allowed to happen? Journalist and author Oliver Bullough took us on a tour of Knightsbridge to explain about the nomadic elite, shell companies and why something needs to be done.

Read about 100 pages, and as much as I love the book, I loathe the system that faciltitates the 'amenities' for all these scumbags. Oliver Bullough, and his fellow journalists, are my heroes. Thanks Oliver for being so blunt about all the sh*t that's going on...

In 1960, before those railings were there, I used to walk along that wall after mass with Ma at the Oratory. We lived in 150 Old Brompton Road (loved a Wimpy in Sth Ken on the way home) where Ma was a housekeeper. We were poor folk surrounded by money and the feelings expressed in this video are very familiar to me from way back.
The rich in UK, India, Russia, China, wherever, have more in common with one another than they do with the poor in their own countries. Funny old world eh?

Just found you through "Led By Donkeys" and ordered your new book. I knew some of this, but it's shocking and sobering to hear it so clearly. Thanks Oliver - because that's actually pretty brave bring this into the limelight.

So it wasn't just the Russian oligarch but Ukrainians as well..... help out by British ministers, lawyers, banks.....The corruption goes so deep I don't think we'll ever get justice for the common man.

I just bought your book and will read later tonight.
I find these types of books depressing because ones suspicions are not confirmed, they're even worse. The caveat in this case was that you stated means and ways to cleanse this system so I'm interested to read/learn about that.
    Thank you for your work.

Finishing up the audio version and it is amazing - love the point that Kleptocracy has created a system that only benefits the wealthiest and often those who created wealth on some of the most economically disadvantaged people in the world.

I think also Blair/Brown began to open the door to these people. The Tories then swung it wide open - no questions asked...

Thank you, Oliver Bullough - it's great to see what we know, or suspect, fleshed out with clear facts and simple storytelling. Brilliant book - couldn't you stand for political office? Lots of MEP seats up for grabs!

Weirdly this book gave me hope. Bollough does a kind of root cause analysis of our global emergency--climate change, poverty, exploitation--by describing the corruption and greed of Moneyland. He lays out in detail what's required to create a system in which justice flows as freely as capital across borders through collective, global financial transparency. Imagine the $$ we'd make available to solve existential, planet-threatening problems that now seem intractable were we to pass some well placed and enforced laws that require clear traceability of capital. We've done it before. I feel both wiser for knowing but also activated to look deeper into US laws to stem international corruption.

If you loot the poor in X make sure that money stays in X. So the bigger better looter comes along and do the same thing and so on. The problem is stable democracies like UK and US are too greedy to let that happen. I really loved the book.

As it's a UK created legal scam, you have to change the people in Britain FROM the kind that enable the legal scam TO those people who will disable the legal scam. It's about (mad?) people who are power mad and need to be fully relieved of their power to carry on this madness. (And if needs be treated, it's the decent thing to do.) But these power mad people are people who look normal and would insist on all sorts of rationale denying any madness at all. In short if you want peaceful change, YOU radically change who and what you vote for. If you don't there's a good chance you end up with war.

Read Oliver's piece on The Caribbean tax haven of Nevis, west indies. Interesting read to say the least. Interesting his referring to the island as a whole as bottom feeders and interesting how he seemed to chummy up to the past administration under Denzel Douglas. The fact of the matter is, the world and life is not fair place and the rich will always look for ways and means to get richer and hide their wealth. Eastern Europeans have done it all over the world from the uk to the USA etc. Why mr Bullough felt the need to denigrate a little 3rd world island is beyond me, never mind the fact that his beloved uk built up itself on the backs of exploited people all over the world (hypocrites).

I have family that live in Nevis. They are not wealthy but are honest as the day is long not in the least "bottom feeders" perhaps the author should express that it's the corrupt (and there's corruption everywhere, especially in London or should I say the City of London) who are loathsome and not the honest islanders of Nevis...
