Tying A Muddler Daddy

  • You might have noticed I quite like tying and fishing daddy long legs / crane fly patterns; we’re a long way from the heady autumn evenings where they swarm (and the trout can laser in on them, refusing any other offerings!) but this is a fun pattern to tie and great practice for spinning deer hair.
I use this as a top dropper with a small nymph (Diawl bach or similar) below; pulled through the ripples, the muddler head and stiff deer hair collar move loads of water and certainly catch the attention of the fish.
Hook - long shank dry, size 8-12
    Thread - black
Tag and rib - medium gold tinsel
Body - tan hares ear dubbing (this one has some fine UV mixed in)
Legs - 6-8 knotted pheasant tail fibres, tied long and scraggly
Collar and head - spun natural deer hair

I agree, one of best flies for the last couple of months of the season.

Using a hair packer or a Bic pen tube, helps to pack the deer hair for trimming. I think this will work in a number of situations! Great video!

Good tip - and cheaper than the nail-clipper style hair packers! On smaller flies I use my half-hitch tool if it will fit over the hook eye.
