This was a treat! My favorite fly of his. You're lucky to have met the man before his passing. My girlfriend and I "honeymooned" in Wilmington and fished the West Branch. Betters' shop was the first stop after we set up at the KOA campground. I have his pattern book, the fishing Adirondacks, and I still have a Haystack and Ausable Wulff tied by him and also a Green Highlander for the landlocked Atlantics in some of the rivers. I had some nice chats with him and his advise when asked how to tie flies was "just make them look buggy". If you fish that Usual as a single wing like he tied it, I hope you pull it under as he suggests, especially near undercut banks and blow downs hanging over the water. You'd be surprised at the fish that bug will pull out. Thanks.
Thank you very much!! from Spain. 🤗🤗

That’s a great story on the origin of the fly and name!
Thank you Sir truly an AWESOME fly. 👍😊
Exceptional pattern and very versatile, I also tie them big and in black to target large buzzers coming off on my local stillwaters. 👍
Brilliant in every way. :-)
Fantastic as usual,, but I fancy a pint🍺👍
👍👍
Fran only utilized fire orange thread
I could be wrong but the original usual didnt have a split wing.. just saying.
