I have seen U2 live a couple of times ( Popmart and Vertigo tours ) and they are a great live band but as soon as Bono starts giving us one of his sermons you know it,s time to go for a piss and grab another couple of beers before the next song lol
"Well, the God I believe in, doesn't need to go for a piss and grab another couple of beers before the next song, MISTUH!!" Yes, I wholeheartedly agree. Belgium here, We saw U2 regularly when they first got on the music scene. I remember The Simple Minds becoming famous at the same time. I remember those small gigs. Jim Kerr being the true introvert and Bono only a pretender. Jim would come to marry Crissie Hyde the lead vocalist with The Pretenders, a legend, and Patsy Kensitt, best looking British Pop singer at that time while Bono went on to touring the world, buying 'his hat' a plane ticket next to him. What a nice gesture to help world famine. I used to love U2, especially the early stuff! They appeared and marketed themselves as the ultimate fan band that would go the extra mile for their fans. Also they acted as if they weren't into posing, posturing and all that BS, and that they were straight, genuine and stood up for the little guy, and not the corporate or political machine. They were also minimalists in music, and sent the message that it was about the music, message, art and NOT the production, money, marketing, greed etc...They later seemed to be consumed by their success to the point that the tours after ZooTv were just a celebration of THEMSELVES AND THEIR SUCCESS....With over the top productions, publicity stunts, political stunts, corporate marketing stunts....And the way they've taken to extreme leftist political associations with politicians and Global elitist organizations like WEF.. Their music took a nose dive too for the last 20 years. They became everything they appeared to be against at the beginning! And here they are today, doing a Vegas residency at the SPHERE, as the first band to play their with these elitist concert packages, playing for the rich and powerful while the United States is in turmoil and literally burning down....crickets from them now....Just playing for Soros, Pelosi, Rothchilds, Buffets, and quietly counting their millions hand over fist. They are a huge disappointment from what they had potential to become.....JMO

One of the funniest cases of someone despising Bono comes from Paul Weller: Weller doesn't care about Bono since forever but Bono really started grind his gears when Noel Gallagher became best buddies with Mr. Vox lol Understandably, Weller doesn't see how Noel can be friends with a guy totally different from their circle of music acquaintances... though, Weller is not your usual cranky musician, he despises a bunch of people (rightfully so).

Not a huge fan of bono, or u2, but they do honestly have a lot of good songs. Few bands have charted so many songs. This means a lot of people like the songs.
They've won many Grammys, influenced artists and are respected by great artists as well (David Bowie, BB King, Johnny Cash, Muse, etc.). Frankly all these haters are more nauseating egotistical than Bono could ever be. I am a big fan of them but also don't believe they're the greatest. I absolutely hated "I Will Follow" when it became something of a hit in the US in 1980. Then they managed to fool me briefly with a few songs that I thought were OK--but it was also because there was so little to like on the contemporary rock scene at the time--before I realized that they were three-chord dreck. This became clearer than ever with the concert film they released, where they not only cleanly reproduce every boring note of their studio versions like the obedient corporate rock band they are, but they also project a kind of fascist aura. For many years now I've held them in absolute contempt. They are pure establishment hacks, like Paul McCartney, but without his talent. If you want to go Irish, go Sinead or Van the Man. They are true rebels.

Every time I think about U2 I remember when they had a song on the “Tomb Raider 2” soundtrack (“Elevation” I believe it was), and my buddies and I were blazing down the road on our Razor scooters one day after we watched it, and one of us was howling the chorus to the song with a leg over the handlebars…and slammed right into a parked truck. Good times.
I don't think George Harrison was particularly keen on U2 either. I'm not sure what he actually said about them but I have a tape of news footage from the day he died and Bono just happened to be being interviewed when the news came in. According to Bono, George hated U2.
I was 12 when my sister took me to see them at Red Rocks Amphitheater in '83. It was quite cool back then, though the venue had a lot to do with the experience. but, the spell dissipated by 1990.
It's rare that anyone has referred to Liam as "a true gentleman." I'm sure he's a basically good guy who has grown up a lot, but a "true gentleman" is something more than that.
Post-script -- After the initial kerfuffle was pretty much over, Negativland released a magazine and CD titled, "The Letter U and the Numeral 2," which documented the band's side of the situation. The magazine included photocopies of press releases and correspondence from SST Records to Negativland. It ended up that SST sued the band for reprinting that material.
Actung baby and the Joshua tree are beyond brilliant. Maybe they’ve disappeared up their own arses, even if they have, those superb albums will single them out as brilliant,to the whole of posterity.
I still can't find whatever egregious sin the band or Bono committed that not only started the backlash but pretty much continues to fuel it. "The band is up it's ass" or "The lead singer is full of themselves" would describe 85% of every popular musical act or solo performer of the last century, especially in regards to Rock And Roll.

I've always felt NegativLand was in the wrong, not because of sampling, but because of trying to confuse the consumer into thinking their single was from U2. That's where I think they crossed the line. Fair use is important, but deceptive advertising is really lousy. If record stores were getting confused about who was releasing the record, it's not too much of a stretch to think consumers would also be getting confused.
Sampling is taking something someone else created. It was also in this case deceptive as you correctly point out, and for as much as I hate U2 I have to side with them here.
@@WinterInTheForest Yeah, it was either lazy promo design...or intentionally misleading to sell copies and get attention. It was no accident. The sampling/track details would have been less of an issue without all that, since it's more insulting to Kasem than the band.
This. Negativland intentionally tried to trick people into buying their music and then had the nerve to blame U2 even though Negativland did it on purpose. You can't intentionally (which they admit) trick customers by pretending to be U2 then play victim. It's trendy to shit on U2 but they did nothing wrong and Negativland themselves admit they did it on purpose.
Agreed. They would literally be undermining the value of the original which has passed copyright territory and is starting to get close to counterfeiting.

Heres a list of people who worked with U2...Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, BB King, Pavarotti. Folk who likes Bono include David Bowie, Lou Reed, Van Morrison.
Was a big fan of U2 in the early 90’s until I saw an interview where a fan shouted out to Bono. He took a big pause, made a slow victory sign and said “Rock and Roll”. I remember thinking that was the least rock and roll thing I could imagine. It all went downhill from there.
I think U2 actually tried back in the 80s. Now they create nothing music, and use it as excuse to go touring. But theyre not alone in that regard. Lots of veteran groups do the same.
I have a different take on the whole Apple situation. The first thing to get straight is they didn’t give away their album for free. The band, along with their label and management, proposed what I think was an ingenious way to create a winning situation for all parties. The idea was that Apple pay a discounted wholesale price for each copy of the album they distributed to their users. This was a win for the label because even with the discounted price, they would make more money than they would if the album was sold through traditional distribution channels. The band itself probably gave up a large part of their share of the album sales in order to discount the price, but there was never a lot of money there for them to make anyway. For many years now, music sales make up the smallest percentage of an artist’s revenue, even for U2. The bulk of an artist’s revenue comes from touring and publishing, especially for U2. Despite all of the backlash they received, they were also able to gain new fans and rekindle the interest of old fans which would have been impossible to do using more traditional ways of promoting music. This results in more demand for concert tickets and an uptick in streaming of their back catalog, which in turn increases the publishing value of that catalog. A win for the band. The win for Apple was the opportunity to distract everyone’s attention from the fact that this version of the iPhone lacked the excitement of previous releases and would have further called into question Tim Cook’s ability to fill Steve Jobs’s shoes. With the press of a button, they demonstrated how they’ve become the biggest music distributor in the world with the biggest rock band in the world. And make no mistake, they ARE the biggest rock band in the world. There are very few bands no longer at the center of popular culture and still selling out arenas everywhere they go. In the end, we are heavily influenced in our decision to like a particular song or artist. Is what U2 did any worse than the other ways music is forced upon us? Do you think your favorite band is popular because they earned it or because their label paid Spotify to repeatedly put their songs on you and your peer group’s suggested playlists? Is it just a coincidence that your favorite movie this summer was produced by Universal Pictures and the song that played throughout the movie and became your most listened to song of the summer was recorded by someone signed to Universal Music? Is it the same coincidence that explains why in 8 seasons of Gilmore Girls, a show with a cult-like following produced by Warner Brothers and originally airing on the WB Network, only artists that were signed to Warner Music had a song on the show’s soundtrack or made an appearance in an episode or two?
Nice explanation but as a former U2 fan who finally threw in the towel after trying for years to understand the motivations and the music, it comes down to a simple fact. The album was terrible and the sequel was unlistenable. Free or not, it wasn’t worth anything. Self absorbed pretensions have no limits with Bono. It just won’t end.
@@lonewolf8667 it’s just not enjoyable to a fan, let alone a casual listener. In the 2000’s the music was pretty forgettable but at least we could say that the music was great when it was played live. The music was made for touring, not album sales or the radio. It was actually genius. But the Innocence and Experience albums were so pretentious and so contrived that it didn’t work for anything. I don’t want to hear every detail of Bono’s childhood and love and loss. I really don’t care. Give me some music that takes me to another place . But not into somebody else’s life. Especially when it’s not that interesting or unique.
I love U2 but it was a bad idea. That being said, it's Apple that should get the criticism- the album was supposed to stay in the cloud where you could download it if you wanted it, but Apple fucked up and pushed it onto some people's phones. That's the real reason they had backlash. That's not U2's fault, they just made the music, it was a tech support problem
@@nicolem.792 U2 could have been the greatest band ever if Bono never gave his opinion on anything! As it is, U2 sucks BIGTIME. Bono killed the music for me.
"Wide Awake" version is the ultimate one to me. In the video, Bono's veins are popping out of his neck because he is singing that song so hard. Have to give him some credit. I saw them on that tour, and they were giving it their all.
I used to love U2. Achtung Baby and Zooropa being my favorite U2 albums. Pop was good too. But after that, I just couldn't get into it. I tried but the music from that point on was just... off or something. Like they just weren't the same anymore. In fact, they really became quite awful in my opinion.
Quite simply, they sold out and starting in 2000 they "went back to their roots", whatever that means...I'll tell you what it means: they had just gone through a decade of amazing creativity and inspiration but the response from PoP was lukewarm so they literally wrote familiar, tired 'U2' sounding songs in order to sell another gazillion albums and get back in the good graces of the masses. Its the equivalent of a writer deliberately writing bad stuff only because they know it will sell and make money. BTW I was the same as you, I was a huge U2 fan in the 90s; from the mid 80s to mid 90s they were easily one of the best bands on the planet.
They still had a bit of zing with ATYCLB, but I agree, they died after POP which was a great album. Like the commenter to your comment said ‘went back to their roots, whatever that might be…’. I thought their roots was experimentation to them it was doing what they did with Joshua tree and Achtung Bany.
To be fair the free album was bought by Apple and released by them rather than the band, they may have agreed to it as a business decision but it's Apple who put it on all the devises
U2 even incensed Killing Joke's Jaz Coleman, which never comes up considering how under the radar that band is. Called them hypocrites or something such. I wonder if any of these rock bands can "improve the world".
I loved both U2 and Echo & The Bunnymen in the early 80s. U2 sang about some serious stuff that I found particularly meaningful, while Echo & The Bunnymen weren't quite as deep and circumspect...instead, they were more upbeat and, dare I say it, fun to listen to. I have probably about the same number of albums from each band for the same period. But by the mid-90s, U2 really began to change as Bono became increasingly full of himself. In the end, I hardly ever listen to U2 anymore, unless I'm in a particularly melancholic, wistful mood (being Irish German, that happens once in awhile), but I listen to Echo & The Bunnymen practically daily.

I liked them in the early 80s... But I liked them less and less as time went on. I keep seeing stuff of Bono hugging people, which made me feel uncomfortable.

You know, I'd heard that story about Negativeland before, and it still makes me sick whenever I hear claims made by members of U2 that they tried to prevail upon their label to soft-pedal their legal action against NL. U2 was one of the biggest bands in the world at the time, and were most certainly the biggest band on the Island Records label at the time. I have a feeling that if they really had pushed the issue with label executives and lawyers, the band's perspective would have carried the day. If, indeed, they tried at all to get the label to back off, I imagine they didn't try very hard. I helped a few friends of mine write songs and lyrics (I didn't play in the band, but I sold them the rights to several of my poems to turn into songs) back in '88 and '89, when I about 16-17 years old. They had jokingly called their band "You, Too", for the first year they played together. They changed it when the lead singer expressed concerns about being sued by the band U2 over some bullshit claim of trademark infringement, and I'm certainly not the guy to say U2 wouldn't have done it. They didn't want to have to change it after building up name recognition and getting some traction under their wheels. They broke up shortly thereafter, though.
I find it fascinating that literally every example here of people trashing U2 are all people who have all proven themselves to be miserable people and/or insufferable in their own right. And I'm far from being a U2 die-hard.
Not so sure about that. U2s music is just about as original and exciting as a lump of coal today, proof is in the radio push pudding. Bono being a douche is only just the cherry on top.

U2 are one in their own genre of music, their own sound and their own approach. Their music shook the foundations of the world when they got big. If you were alive around that time, you would know this. Instead of making assumptions being born 30 years after their height. Becaue they were THEE band of the mid and late 80s, end of story. People can have the right to their own opinion, but you have to admit they're absolute legends. And instead of focusing on U2, focus on the dislike of every band that's ever existed for that matter in future videos. Although I must say their music NOW.....Pfffff, I'm good.
Lol whatever you say pal 😂 U2 are their own genre of music?? What, Wuss Pop?? Nothing redeemable about the worst rhythm section (as Henry Rollins described them) with Bono”s (stupid name) monotonous voice and The Edge’s (stupid name) one trick pony guitar sound.
The album wasn't free. You had to sign up for Apple or whatever and get flushed into their system. I took a pass. You couldn't just no strings download it.That is definitely not free.
It all comes down to Bono in the end. He is the reason for all the u2 hate, and the Edge too but to a much lesser degree. I am a fan of the records, whatever else is a lost case... The singer is gone already, like he says in his own song "gone".., he actually is brutally honest about it and kudos to him for that. But Unforgettable Fire and Achtung Baby (Joshua Tree as well) are still there. And in many ways, they sound better now than before. Everything this guy has done (basically betraying almost everything he said he stood for, and many of the fans and even himself..) has elevated the standard of those old songs. Listen to "Acrobat" or "Gone", it's all right there.
"Basically betraying everything he stood for" He literally called himself out on this during Bullet the Blue Sky in a show a few years ago. During rhe monologue his younger self confronts him by saying "Have you forgotten who you are? Have you forgotten where you've come from? You're Irish and here you are making out with the powerful, like you're really there for the powerless..." I've been listening to his new book and he is quite self effacing. He owns up to the flack he's gotten and recognizes the effect it's had on the band, especially during his AIDS work. He understood why people would wonder why he's "shaking fucking hands with these suits". But it was because he visited a hospital in Africa where he saw all these people waiting to die because they had no access to the drugs we do. All in all, I think his haters don't really care to know that about him. It's easy to hate. Negativity is addicting. Yeah he's no saint and he'd be the first to admit it.

What a meaningless word salad.

U2 even incensed Killing Joke's Jaz Coleman, which never comes up considering how under the radar that band is. Called them hypocrites or something such. I wonder if any of these rock bands can "improve the world".
U2 is so awesome! Love them
I loved both U2 and Echo & The Bunnymen in the early 80s.
U2 is an amazing band. As well as foo fighters, rollins band or oasis. The moment you learn to separate the artist from the work is the moment when you learn to enjoy art.
BINGO!!!! i`m a massive U2 fan and yet still think Bono is a cnut
Good comment!
in your opinion only... and I enjoy art and music ..not trash pop trash
Pathetic.
U2 is just amazing, it’s ok to be jealous of them
The band is amazing. Bono…ehhh. No denying his talents…but the man gotta stop acting like he can walk on water.
The band are insufferable boobs. I have nothing but contempt for anyone that's friends with new world order types.
To be fair, most of the people that expressed their dislike for U2 have plenty of haters themselves!
Exactly..........
exactly
Or have never been heard of or given a second thought by millions upon millions.
Only person I give a pass to is Rollins, but he's always been such a stand up, nice and very honest guy that I can give him a mulligan for exposing his inner Sophomoric Elitist.
The others? Seriously... Waters? Gallagher?
Gimme Bono or the Edge any day.
Whats the difference between the Edge & Jimmy Page?
The Edge thinks he's a better guitarist.
I have never bothered to learn one thing the Edge has done on guitar.

I still remember the picture of that homeless guy with the cardboard sign that said “will remove the new U2 album from your iPhone for $5”
Yeah sure you did....nice try wannabe being funny.... I thought I better comment on yer comment 😆 wannabe
I can respect that people like U2, but I just don't get it. I don't understand their mega-fame. They are very mid. And Bono has something very dark about him, and his "charity" work.
They were "different" in the 80s where all their music seemed "alternative". Then came the 90s and beyond where all their music sounded the same.
imfao of course.
@@daBEAGLE1017 They were very different in the 90's.

One of my favourite episodes of South Park of all time. Fucking brilliant! "He's not the record holder .............he's the record".
I liked them in the early 80s... But I liked them less and less as time went on.
I keep seeing stuff of Bono hugging people, which made me feel uncomfortable.
I was an early u2 fan, their song bad from wide awake in America still one of the best versions and one of the best rock songs, but since they downloaded that horrible album on my iTunes I can’t get rid of it. I erase each song but it just keeps coming back, like a bad horror movie LOL ✌️
Some people say follow the money. I say follow the Bono. - David Icke
Most of the criticism is valid though I still enjoy U2' Music.
The fact that Bono is friends with Pilosi is cringe worthy in itself. They deserve each other.
I can't stand Bono and U2 either, so I don't judge these guys either
I got to see U2 at Red Rocks back in the 1990s, then at the old Mile High, and they were both great shows; what they are now, I just don’t know…
Jealousy is at the core of all these guys. U2 will be around long after any of these guys.
LOL !!!!!
Bono is a complete and utter sellout! Lobbying for Bill gates and the likes, it’s disgusting a rock star doing that.
Not so sure about that. U2s music is just about as original and exciting as a lump of coal today, proof is in the radio push pudding. Bono being a douche is only just the cherry on top.
@@thesean3194 So much wrong in your BS
How about taking offence at Bono's doucheness, eh, buddy? Mayba that's at the core?
He in a Hypocrite.
Sunday Bloody Sunday still goes hard
Bono had said some stuff in the past, and have annoyed a lot of people but to be fair, his songs slap and his 2002 Super Bowl concert was top tier.
Bono hangs out with the most annoying and evil people on the planet at the WEF.
Yes it’s the WEF that is the most evil, not the wealthy, murderous dictators all around the world, con artists, billionaires selling people lies while they hide their hand and fill their pockets, terrorist hate groups etc
Bunch of globalist polesmokers
He hangs out with the warmongers and the people who want to starve us to death while pretending to care so much about people. The only thing Bonehead cares about is getting richer and keeping himself relevant, nothing more.
What? Rap artists
@@darrenpearn9083 Worse, politicians and royals.
Adam Clayton is a solid bass player say what you want about the rest of them.
The Joshua Tree is a masterpiece. Roots Rock, Americana, Pop, Gospel, Folk, Blues. Easily their best release.
@@frankieflannelette557 I speak for u2 fans, as well as being one myself. It's going to be ok bud.
It's just typical radio friendly pop rock, good at that but nothing special
There are some great music and albums...The politics and the people they hang out with disgust me though...
Barry Jackson agree 100%, he used to be against the establishment, now he is a proud member of it, pushing dubious agendas and so on
"Basically betraying everything he stood for"
He literally called himself out on this during Bullet the Blue Sky in a show a few years ago. During rhe monologue his younger self confronts him by saying "Have you forgotten who you are? Have you forgotten where you've come from? You're Irish and here you are making out with the powerful, like you're really there for the powerless..."
I've been listening to his new book and he is quite self effacing.
