    For photo enthusiasts, the situation is actually worse than you have put out. The proposals have been for a 60% tariff on Chinese products, and 20% on JAPANESE products. We are cornered. Trying to scrape the funds together for my dream lens (Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8, Japanese company but manufactured in China) before the photo apocalypse hits. You birders out there lusting after some multi-100mm lenses also better act quickly. This may kill off the interchangeable-lens camera industry for good. (Google: will trump tariffs apply to Japanese products?) (Note: Both Google Gemini AI and Microsoft Copilot AI refuse to answer tariff questions on the grounds that they are political!)

    Somebody got rather testy about me deleting comments. So, and this is something I've had to explain to folks on the left as well as the right, freedom of speech is something the government can't abridge. Here in the States we have our First Amendment, which starts with, "Congress shall make no law…" Neither I nor RUclips are Congress. I don't have time to debate unreachable people and I don't need to have their comments clogging up the comments section. I'm not the MAGA whisperer.

    What he actually does is difficult to know at this stage. It would not be unprecedented for him to impose tariffs, of course, but the extent might not be as much as he threatened, particularly since a number of neoliberal conservatives oppose such measures. This said, if comprehensive tariffs go into effect, and if prices consequently increase, then just maybe, some of his followers, just some, will begin to understand their mistake.

    The majority of economists say tariffs are a bad idea as they raise prices and taxes on goods and inflation and unemployment. In Trump's previous term, he lowered corporate taxes from 35% to 21% causing a huge deficit.

    Products will be imported through another country, such as Mexico, Canada, or another friendly country. This process will undoubtedly result in a slight shipping price increase. As for camera equipment, many new and used items are already sold through Japan and Korea.

    • @ToddBannor
      @ToddBannor  4 дня назад

      I'm sorry that's ridiculous. It doesn't matter because if it's manufactured in China, it'll get taxed no matter how it gets in. And, Japan and Korea will have tariffs and the price of used cameras will probably go up. Read the comment I pinned. The majority of economists agree the tariff plan will be a disaster.

    There is a better history lesson about the effects of tariffs on the products we purchase. For the first 130 years of out nation the government depended on tariffs for revenue. But, tariffs were used to protect domestic industries. The downside was everytime the tariff was raised at the behest of industries, the American industries would raise their prices to just below the increased tariff rate. This put a strain on farmers who always had small profit margins. Increased tariffs led to the Nullification Crisis during the Jackson Administration, nearly causing a civil war, and the adoption of the graduated income tax that Americans hate today. You are correct that tariffs will cause prices to rise because tariff costs will be passed on to American consumers.

    • @ToddBannor
      @ToddBannor  5 дней назад

      This is a good point and I know this, but going into the history would've made a video longer than I wanted. You're correct that up until the Civil War, tariffs were the only source of government revenue.

    All this is obvious (and by the way, people didn't think the crash of 1929 was going to last. Read business mags from the era, and the Great Depression was considered a blip until about 1931). But camera users face an addtional dilemma. If your washing machine is starting to go, you replace it now. But with digital cameras, even if you beat the price increase, a newer and improved model is just around the corner.

    • @ToddBannor
      @ToddBannor  5 дней назад

      True. But I would say that upgrading every time your model is refreshed isn't that necessary these days. Yes, I upgraded from the G9, to the G9II, but the G9 is still a very good camera. But yeah, if you're thinking of upgrading, it's probably a good idea to do it now.

    Todd... A tariff can be used as a bargaining chip... However, the sad issue is that for the past 40 years, the slow evolution was migration to labor rich environment and at the time cheap China. China planned different stages of its manufacturing evolution. There was an absolute focus on why they manufactured consumer goods. In the first stage, since they were well ahead of the planning curve to ensure their success in the addictive consumption of the American mentality China made sure that a consumer-based America had their Apple pie ingredient, baked in China. American companies ran over each other to engage in manufacturing in China. ( Side bar so did Japanese camera companies. The Chinese companies were able to design and manufacture flashes, lenses, etc with decent quality. However, their skill, and technology were “ shared” with a Chinese company. Along with this blind evolution to satisfy the American consumer and profits may I add their urge to have things China wisely sent their Young to American colleges a. These students were tuition were paid in full at America’s finest institutions. The vast majority of disciplines were pure and applied science courses of study. The Chinese students who graduated from MIT, HAVARD, UCLA, and SUNY back in 2004 are well on their working curve of twenty years ( As a photographer but in my other life my colleagues were well aware of what the CCP was trying to accomplish before 1/1/2000. The objective was taking shape )
    Todd, look my friend when you have a nation that cries private property rights when you unwrap the web of who and what owns land near sensitive US Military bases, centers of R&D and there was NO federal kickback for the past four years ( ie North Carolina, Fort Liberty. The largest US military base in the continental USA ) we “ HAD “ issues.
    Todd, I have M43 / Olympus, Lumix, Nikon DSR, and Z DX and FX. I am not worried about potential tariffs for China. Nikon, Canon, Sony, and Panasonic will figure out how to avoid tariffs… ie build a plant in the USA.
    In conclusion, we are more than four decades into Rope a Dope of offshoring.
    I look forward to the long-overdue reality check. Remember the guy from Queens, NY stated it was not China that put us in the disadvantages of today, BUT it was our own people that did it!
    ( I hate writing comments on You Tube a real pain! )

    • @ToddBannor
      @ToddBannor  6 дней назад +5

      A massive tariff isn't a bargaining chip, it's an FU. China isn't really a communist country. It's a fascist autocratic country that embraces private enterprise as long as the Communist Party holds ultimate power. That happened decades ago when the communists decided they didn't have a problem with private enterprise, as long as they held all political power.
