Cesar, maestro, this is brilliant - even more so than your other usual super brilliant vlogs. Please let's keep trying to make the modern Realists conceive of their ideas visually, rather than (mistakenly) thinking that the simple Narrative statement is enough. Paintings are made of coloured shapes (coloured shapes are their basic vocabulary), and today's Realists have to realise that their job is to manipulate, group and design these shapes into a pattern that pushes the Narrative into the viewer's consciousness. This is called Pictorial Composition and is only taught, these days, at the Angel Academy of Art, Florence. Bravo, caro mio!! Sei un grande davvero!
Michael John Angel Maestro!!! Thank you! And respect!! It's true most of this information I leared while studying with you. See you soon... in May. GO ANGEL ACADEMY
I love how you make complex theories easy to understand. I bought your portrait painting video and I love it. Afterwards I found your RUclips channel and it feels like bonus material. If anyone out there is contemplating buying his painting video and is scared by the price. Do it! You will not be disappointed. He explains painting portraits in the same easy to understand way as all of these RUclips videos. Cesar I love your RUclips channel. I am so glad I bought your painting video, I have learned so much. Keep it up please.
Thanks for confirming I have been on the right track as I continue on my journey of understanding how to approach my own painting. I only disovered the existence of the Angel School in Florence today. I failed to be accepted as a student at Glasgow School of Art back in the 1970s, but I'm glad now I was rejected as I suspect my love of classical Art would have been crushed by the school. I had assumed , in my naivety, that access to that school would have trained me in the methods of the Old Masters.
Cesar, I discovered your channel about 6 months ago and I wanna thank you for the knowledge and advice you share with us. Youre the best! :) Thank you!
You are so generous with the content of your free videos..I have learnt so much from just watching a few. Thank you, and wishing you continued success!
I am a disabled artist that never had the opportunity to go to school thank you for you great explanations and examples. Your explanations and historical examples make incorporating these importance artistic values into our painting practice- practical and possible. Thank you for your series it is well crafted indeed.
Listening to you talk about art is incredibly inspiring. You really need to do a book for artists on how to look at art and the ask the important questions one should be considering when viewing a piece. In this video you are giving me questions I might never have thought to ask about a piece.
david bryan I agree. I also think there is a academic, theoretical way to approach looking at art. It's different, more through a learning lens... if that makes sense. Thanks for replying

Whoooha.. So much information, so much to take in, to process, to sort in my mind. *rubs temples* VERY VERY useful, so much good information and above all a sensible explanation for each period and painting. Thanks for sharing this with us!
Thank you Cesar, I live in Europe and near great Museus those I often visite, but I have never seen so much as you do in these old paintings.I just admire them but have never learned anything from it.You has helped me to push my limitations in seeing through a true artistically way of observation.
So inspiring. It has been said so many times in other comments, but alas, this is exactly what this video has done for me. So passionate. What a great video for art history that won’t be forgotten!! Art teachers - take note!!

Cesar, I did a report for Art History from the very paintings in this very museum! You did a much better job than me, I love love love your explanations of these pieces. Thank you for posting! I will share this!!
Thank you so much for this! Your commentary is fantastic. I wish more instructors were as knowledgeable and articulate as you. It's amazing how many visual artists DON'T KNOW about the development of compositional techniques throughout history.
Great video. Now everyone, keep this in mind and actually go draw and paint, it's not enough watching every video and regurgitating this information to others so you look smart, so many people doing this type of things this days...
Extreme late reaction, just seeing this now and wanted to thank you for this vlog. Because feel like I have learned more in this than my last two years of art history classes together! Thanks man, you make me eager to learn again and keep practicing!
Thank for posting this, all excellent points and you are an excellent teacher. I always liked the stage-like lighting in the old master paintings. The figures almost look like they are in the spotlight against the dark backgrounds.
Awesome stuff here Cesar. I've been watching your videos all day. I thoroughly enjoy getting little bits of insight from everything. I can see the William-Adolphe Bouguereau influence now that you mentioned it. Much Love, keep sharing
I spent may hours there at the SD Art Museum also the Timkin Museum in Balboa Park. Thanks for the memories. You need to come to Louisville, KY to the Speed Art Museum. Cheers.
This was almost a perfect summary of a the chapter „Tone and color design“ from Harold Speeds „Oil painting techniques and materials“ I was reading today. Just 10 times less dry and more fun! :) Great information!
Thank you so much for sharing these thoughts! They landed in my ears just when I needed them the most!😊 It’s been a while since I have last found something that useful and new to me about painting on the internet! And part of what should be the basics every painter should know. Funny, huh? Thank you, thank you, you’re a gem of a soul! ❤️

Michael John Angel narratives attached to art are BULLSHIT!
@@elsagrace3893 Two year old response, but why do you feel attaching a narrative to art is bullshit?
I was always taught "Straight lines are there for duty ,Curved lines are there for Beauty" Great vid as always! Thank you.
