Emotions can be painful, and self-harm may feel like the only way to cope with them. But there are other ways to deal with painful emotions. Help is available. For 24/7 support, call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text TALK to 741741. If you or someone else is in danger, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department.

As a teenage girl who self harms i completely agree with this approach, telling the parents/a counselor only makes things worse for the person and it doesn't help. The parents could be abusive, which may make their life even harder than it was before and increase the self harm. Thank you for making this video! I hope that when i feel ready to be helped, it'll be by someone who follows these steps.

This is great information to get out to the public, thank you! Also important to ask the person the intention of their self harm, is it a suicidal gesture or action, or a way to relieve emotional pain? If suicidal in nature then this is an emergency and must seek treatment right away. If not scheduling a visit with a therapist or mental health provider is advised to learn and work on more positive coping strategies.

My friend self harms and today they talked about buying new expensive razors. They talk to me about how they are out of room and stuff. I'm just so concerned and I want them to stop. It's to the point where they don't take it seriously and joke a lot about it. They always say stuff like "got some razors wanna go in the bathroom" it's gotten bad. I don't even think they joke about it to cope but to enforce it. If anyone has recommendations to help stop them PLEASE LET ME KNOW I'M SCARED

Just saw scars on my friends wrist. I know he lied. I know he doesn’t have a cat. I know his parents are divorced and his situation is ass. But he has dark humor like this and I’m insanely worried. He’s usually very while texting and you can only tell so little from the vague clues he gives, like memes of his family situations. Please help.

Also, self harm can be in any age, even really young ages can cut or just generally hurt themselfs, as a 8 yr old i would hit my head when i was angry and that leads to worse problems

@@natesasanti-fleming9650 i dont know if it does help. I appreciate your offer tho
So heres the story of how it started: I was getting verbally abused at that time and later physical too. One time I got a fist in the face and was told it was just my fault. I was around eleven or twelve years old at that time so I believed that it was really my fault. I don't actually know what happend to me then but something in my brain started to tell me that I deserve to be hurt.I was so sad and angry with myself so I harmed myself. In that Moment everything released and I felt free for a Moment. Since then I do it everytime I feel a strong Emotion. I am so addicted to this feeling of release. I know that it's super bad and I should stop immediatly. But I often fall Back into this place so I still do it sometimes .
      Yup thats my story

Hello I've recently learned of a friend doing self harm and I was wondering if this is a appropriate response(also sorry if i make any mistakes with spelling or grammar english is not my native languege) Hey, I understand that you're stressed but please don't hurt yourself. I know that what's happening to you is difficult, but don't do it anyway and don't be afraid to tell me anything.

Usually when people find out, the person has already developed a addiction, so they can't really stop as they so choose, but they do try. Just saying

My best friend has been dealing with self harm for some time. I don't really know about the story, when did it start, or what was the cause but it probably has to do with the death of his biological mother. I think I'm the first person he has opened up about it, not having talked about it to his step father (both his parents died, it sucks. So his oldest sister stepped up to take care of him and his other sister. So now the oldest sister is "the mother" and her husband is the step father in question), his sisters, and surprisingly his gf, because, he even said it himself, that he is reluctant about her knowing the truth and judging him. I don't know what to do about it rather than talking with him. I have already suggested for him to talk about it to his parents (keep in mind we are all in high school) and to seek medical health of some sort but he doesn't buy it. I just hope he stops some day soon. Does anybody has any idea of what could I do to help him? As I said, I talk to him and try to cheer him up but it doesn't seem to be enough. I also worry he might get suicidal because he doesn't seem very cheerful around school, only with me and his gf. I'm worried.

People with self harm shouldn’t be afraid to reach out and if one person won’t help you there’s always countless other people who would be willing to help you along with therapists and school counselors

    Hello everyone.
I have a friend who has been doing self harm for about 6 months now. Since i have heard about it, i keep insisting on talking to her therapist about this, but she refuses. She jokes about it and refuses any form of help for me. Her parents knew at some point but they are persuaded she stopped. She has already commited multiple suicide attempts and i'm really scared for her. I am completely lost.

Thank you for your comment. By asking for help for your friend, you are taking the first step to dispelling stigma for us all. For support and resources on mental health, the NAMI National Warmline Directory is a great resource, unlike a hotline for those in immediate crisis, warmlines provide early intervention with emotional support that can prevent a crisis - and a more costly 911 call or ER visit. The lines are typically free, confidential peer-support services staffed by volunteers or paid employees who have experienced mental health conditions themselves. For a list of where to find this service in your area please check out the link here -> www.nami.org/NAMI/media/NAMI-Media/BlogImageArchive/2020/NAMI-National-HelpLine-WarmLine-Directory-3-11-20.pdf

im just being honest about one point that if you're actually sad or depressed and does slef harm, you wouldnt want to go talk to a doctor. Real people that doe self harm does not want any attention.
