A detail I really like about this case is Beh’leeb’s “breakdown.”It’s very subdued as she calmly casts aside her mourning veil and draws a new symbol upon her face.
The mark Beh’leeb drew after the trial is the Kurainese symbol for “death” and the same mark upon Lady Keera.
As explained by Rayfa, the symbol for death symbolizes resolve and a desire to fight until the end. Beh’leeb has accepted her husbands death and gained even more resolve to see the revolution through.

What a truly devastating case. Beh’leeb being forced to kill Zeh’lot in self-defense. Tahrust, realizing the terrible position his wife was in, resorted to framing Maya, someone he cared for, for murder…by killing himself. All to protect his beloved wife.
A loving, pious couple, forced into violence and ripped apart by a cruel law and an authoritarian regime.
Maya, forced to endure yet another rough stint as defendant, facing the almost constant ire of the general public.
Rayfa, having her sacred rites manipulated to obscure the truth, rather than reveal it. Compounded by her ongoing internal crisis of self AND the dark truth of her Royal Family and the “noble” Lady Kee’ra being revealed to her.
It is the brutal nature of this corrupt kingdom laid bare. A truly somber note indeed.
Thankfully, there are some beacons of light shining through . Maya's steadfast positivity, Phoenix's determination, both coming to help support Rayfa after the case. Beh'leeb striving to carry on the work of her late husband; to help bring in legitimate change. The story isn't over, not in the slightest.

I WILL say though, while definitely being a good translation, the fanmade one (which is the only one available through the original 3DS) is both not as charming as the official one (which has that polish and charm we're used to the official translations of the series having), and is also incomplete, as the second game hasn't yet been fully translated.
Despite finding Lucah's decision to play every game in its original hardware quite charming and appropriate, I would suggest she play The Great Ace Attorney through the PC port collection instead. And to be quite fair, one could argue since it's the first official way to play the games in english, it IS the "original hardware" that the game was available on to the west. I mean I imagine she didn't play the first trilogy on the GBA, she played the DS port instead since it's the one the west got first.

The end of this case is very bittersweet, with a lot of heartbreak, but also some glimmers of hope.
The Inmees’ tragedy is a grim example of how terrible the DC Act really is. Beh’leeb only acted in self-defense, and against someone she considered as close as a son, but who was not afraid to try and kill her in his role as the rebel hunter Lady Kee’ra. Even so, under the wording of the law, Beh’leeb would still have been brought to trial, and with no one to defend her, she would have been found guilty, and when she was with child, too…So Tahrust did what he felt was the only thing he could do: commit suicide and use what the Divination Seance would show to frame Maya, even though it’s clear he regretted putting her in such a position. It really goes to show how twisted the justice system in Khura’in had become if this was the only way he could think to save his wife and unborn child. Still, the tragedy of their tale is opening people’s eyes to the truth, and Beh’leeb got to bid her husband farewell properly. Still makes me misty-eyed..
And then there’s Rayfa. She’s already had it rough this case, having to accept that the Divination Seance isn’t the absolute truth she’s believed it to be, and that someone she dismissed as a fraud really can channel spirits, but now she learns that her father was using Zeh’lot as Lady Kee’ra as his secret police, legally sanctioning murder to quell rebellion. Ever since Phoenix arrived, her worldview has been turned on its head, her ego has taken a battering, and she doesn’t know what to believe anymore. Thankfully, Maya has a heartwarming speech for her, with a lovely new expression we haven’t seen on her yet, to assure her that she still has an important role to play despite recent events, and that it’s up to her to decide what sort of ruler she wants to be, and to think about what will be best for her people. It’s shown that Maya really has matured over the years, and she’s given Rayfa something to consider, showing there may be hope for her yet.

Tahrust and Beh'leeb are great, and Beh'leeb has to be probably among some of the best lead culprits in this franchise. She just spends a couple days grieving a dead loved one, gives some of the more important information to the trial, before appearing in court and outright admitting to the murder.
Like, no, Beh'leeb has to be one of the strongest characters in this franchise. To realize one of her closest family friends was actually a spy for a corrupt regime, have him BOASTING his position before trying to kill her, accidentally killing HIM instead, explain that to her husband, discover he died the next day, all the while being pregnant and likely knowing just about everything that took two days of trials to figure out. It's no wonder she came forward and just answered the rest. And STILL, she resolved immediately after to carry on where her husband left off. Like, this lady has some resolve. One might even say the will of a Dragon.

The twist that Tahrust Inmee killed himself is exactly what I meant with they know how to make them work. It was a reveal, not being hidden behind a supernatural gameplay element or impossible to know beforehand. All the facts and thought processes were already there, only hidden by the assertion, that basically no person playing this will even fathom the possibility of the murder being Tahrust himself. As there never was a suicide before in the AA-series.
The revisualization is also the perfect way to finally reveal the twist. Letting the player puzzle it together for themselves piece by piece. Slowly revealing and at the same time explaining the twist and its story, withno deus ex machinas or logic hoops, while we are cinematically following the red string of fate. Until that one moment, where we see that one answer, that makes it click in our head and completely takes us out. It feels so f'cking good!
I also just noticed the similarities of this case and Turnabout Serenade. Both are 3rd Cases that are about the problems of a flawed legal system and how others can use them for their advantage. Just that SoJ did this setup way better, as it is not riddled with logic holes and main protagonists being out of Character through the whole case just to make the plot work. Plus an extra dosis of heavy fucking feels for the culprit, which are the complete opposite to the last culprit, Roger Retinz. From maximum hate and enjoyment of his convction to complete sadness and sympathy.
The moment that whole toxic lawyer-hating bs takes a backseat and it is all about the bigger plot ,the feels and the characters, Spirit of Justice shines its brightest.

When I first played this trial I was unfortunately spoiled on Tahrust’s death, and I think that left me in a bit of a salty mood and didn’t enjoy the rest of the trial as much as I might have done. But looking back at this one years later, it was really well-written. Just like Danganronpa has its own unique rules and twists that you see in the trials, this one made great use of the spirit-channelling we’re familiar with, as well as the new divination seance and the DC act. You’d only get a trial like this in Ace Attorney!

Every time I think about this case, I ask myself "Isn't there something he could've done to protect his wife that *didn't* involve almost sending 2 innocent people to their deaths?", but that's the thing: There wasn't. The best-case scenario would be that Tahrust would ask Phoenix to defend Beh'leeb, but even if he did, there'd be no way to prove that she killed Puhray in self-defense, so their lives could've still been in danger. The couple really was backed into a corner by the corrupt monarchy's laws. Which makes the ending, where Beh'eeb vows to avenge her husband's death by joining the revolution, so much more impactful!

Yeah so many things were in play that made it nigh impossible for the high priest to consider alternative methods. His disciple going missing would spark suspicion, and there would inevitably be a search in related areas. And with Puh'ray's identity being heavily linked with the high priest's family, they'd also be investigated thoroughly. Plus, the spring in the hideout area was already stained with his blood, and with the ceremony taking place not long after, there was practically no other time to cover up their tracks.

      @racoonmaster5713 5 месяцев назад +4

Some other culprits that weren't cross examined include...
1-4) When it comes to DL-6, Dracula was never cross examined, due to him being the prosecutor and the culprit.
3-5) Again, same reason. The culprit was never cross examined due to him being the prosecutor and the culprit.
4-4) As you said, some culprits weren't cross examined because they were dead (in this case, Magnifi Gramarye was his own killer).
      6-3) Exactly as you mentioned.
And that's all, I'm pretty sure. But you could discount Dracula due to him being cross-examined in other games (Investigations 2, case 3). That leaves us with Godot and Behleeb being the only culprits not to have a cross examination sequence, and Behleeb to be the only one not to say anything at all in court, up until her confession.
Remember that spoilers are not welcome, so... I think one thing that I've not seen brought up much, is how this case might actually kinda hint at Phoenix and Maya's relationship, as much as the Phoenix x Edgeworth memes are fun. Such a huge part of the end of this case, is that Tahrust went so far because he couldn't handle the idea of Beh'leeb sticking with him and sharing in his punishment as he took the fall for the murder. He knew the DC act's penalties, and so much emphasis is put on the two taking what may come together because of their love. Which in comparison, the first trial Nick took in Kura'in, he wasn't aware of the DC Act, but he was already in the thick of things by the time it came up, and wasn't about to dip and abandon a kid. But with Maya, he knew everything going in, and there wasn't so much as a moment where he considered not defending her. Like Tahrust's fears with his wife, Phoenix stuck by her regardless of what may come. It's possible I'm looking too much into it, but hey. Interpretation is a lot of subtext.

45:15 What’s most upsetting is, when you realize how screwed up the legal system is, the high priest honestly had no other choice.
It’s one thing to not trust lawyers and therefore not be able to approach Nick. But he honestly could’ve just used the snow to throw of the time of Zeh’lot’s death, moved his body to the plaza, planted the dagger, and left it at that. He didn’t have to stage his OWN death on top of that. But for one thing, the authorities would have figured out that the body was moved if they had found Zeh’lot’s blood in the spring, which explains why he’d replace the blood with his own. They would have realized that the murder actually occurred at the Inner Sanctum.
But more importantly, like he said, if he had simply tried to tamper with the evidence and got caught and arrested for doing so, his wife would have tried to testify on his behalf, and if he had been found guilty, she would have also been found guilty for supporting him (which is dumb, because even though the law reads, “Those who would support criminals will be deemed just as guilty,” this law was created because of something a lawyer did 23 years ago, so it makes no sense that it would apply to anyone other than lawyers.) So literally the only other option to avoid getting arrested himself was to literally disappear from this world. It was super clever, and no matter how things would have turned out, he was always more concerned about what would happen to his wife than what would happen to himself.
Also, let’s not forget that, since Maya was with him for the rite anyway, he had no choice but to pin this all on her, someone he had been so kind to up until then. Literally no one else mattered but his wife at that point, not Maya, and not even himself.

Believe it or not, this is actually one of the most controversial cases in the game. Many think framing Maya who was very close with both Tahrust and Beh'leeb wasn't justified considering that like Phoenix points out, they could have just asked him for help. The justification that they "don't trust lawyers" doesn't really make much sense either since they were both rebels risking their lives to bring lawyers back to Khura'in, and Phoenix had already proven his abilities in the first case.
Personally, I'm somewhere in between the "like this case" and "hate this case" crowds. I get what the writers were trying to do and I do find it genuinely sad but I also think the complaints are valid and that some parts of the case were handled very poorly. It's also frustrating to see Maya get accused of murder yet again since by this point it's a total cliche.
Anyway, despite being the most hated case, the next one is actually my favorite from this game. I hope you enjoy it!

I think it was pretty evident that it's not he didn't trust Phoenix, or lawyers, it's just that they were sparse and the chances of them winning very low against the law system in that country
But ultimately trying to pin it on maya and basically helping the prosecution just like what the minister of Justice would have wanted is not good

13:39 Maya mentioned that she traded her Steel Samurai watch for the Plumed Punisher strap, but she never mentioned who she traded with. She just said it was a fan. But once you look at the photo closely, you realize that she traded with Behleeb.

The stuff in this particular episode is a major reason I claim this as one of my two favorite cases. Still makes me tear up.

The episode title and the little snippet of the song verse in the description has never been more appropriate. Huey Lewis would approve.
