  • These past couple of months I watched forged in a fire a lot and I am inspired by them a lot that's why I decided to build this coal forge. This forge is made out of 4 mm thick mild steel and I lined the walls with 1" thick refractory cement to make it more insulated. I also laid a 1/2" thick layer of refractory cement on the entire surface of the forge so that if I have to heat treat long knives than I can able to heat them very easily. If you are using a 1/2" thick steel plate that you have no need to lined the fire pit. When I performed my first test I found that the fire pit walls turned into bright yellow color and I think If I am going to run my forge for a couple of more minutes I completely destroyed my fire pit. I also added 4 locking casters to each of the legs so that I can move this heavy forge where ever I want.

    I really like your details of lockable, rotating casters and lining with refactory cement. When I rebuild my forge, I'll do the same.

      +Bob Vines thanks buddy I gald you like it. I suggest to slightly increase the thickness around the fire pit to prevent small cracks.good luck with your build.

    yeah man, ive built a couple of forges. both coal and propane, yo simplified the process in several areas. i actually used 1/2" plate for my fire pot of the coal forge. lots of overkill, but thats what i had on hand.
    great job! great video!

    Would you mind telling me the size of the fire pit at the top and the size at the smaller bottom ( before you added any fire cement) please. I have a stand & some 12mm plate & want to make a similar design. This seems brilliant.
    Thanks for an excellent video by the way

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  2 года назад

      Thanks, top dimension of the rectangle is 15"X 8" and dimensions from the bottom is 8" X 3". To construct that pit you need 4 trapezoid having dimensions 8"x15" and 8" x 3". Perpendicular height of that trapezium is 6". Hope it helps good luck.:)

    Did you use 1/4 inch sheet metal to build the box around your fire pot?

    • @ambroscustom

      No dear it's 4mm thick. The whole build is made out of 4mm thick sheet of mild Steel.

    Could you give me instructions on how to construct the firepit (just the drawing part) or maybe even your measurements or a little drawing of the plates i need to cut for the pit ?
    Would be really nice and Im to stupid to figure it out by myself
    Just pm me
    I really like your design and im trying to build it kinda the same way

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  5 лет назад +1

      Look for that kind of pit you need to make trapezium which have two parallel sides and two non parallel sides. But make sure that the two non parallel sides needs to be equal. The two parallel sides having two different measurements the top one which is smaller in length is going to made your bottom of the pit. There are total of 4 pieces required. You can keep all of them same or you can make pair of two like what I do in my case. But make sure in all of the four pieces the tapered sides need to have same length and the angles. Send me you mail id I send you the design, if you have some custom requirement just leave me a message. I reply you tomorrow at the same time.

    how do you deal with clinker??

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  6 лет назад +1

      +Chris Qiao it's quite easy for me, for that I use piece of rebar and then forcing the clinker to the bottom and also break it down to small chunks so that it can easily pass through that perforated metal sheet which I made having 13 mm diameter holes to the dumping area and from that it easily get out of the forge. Seems to be look confusing but some how I easily master this process and keep my forge ignite. I do this process after every 30-45 minute to keep my forge ignite. thanks...

    Holy crap never seen anyone use a jigsaw to cut that thick of sheet metal , what kind of saw are you using if it's ok to say ???? And blades ????

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  5 лет назад +1

      Hahaha but it's working good brother, jigsaw doesn't matter, the blade I used is from Bosch and I recommend that for this work. You have to kept the speed at medium and don't try to force the blade in forward motion let the blade do the job and use oil to kept the blade cool and make sure to clean the debris. If you follow this recipe you can easily cut metal with this. Thickness wasn't that much in my case it's only around 4mm but off camera I also cut 12mm brass with this without any issues for my bowei knife.

    • @blakehorton8110
      @blakehorton8110 5 лет назад

      @@ambroscustom thank you I will look at the jigsaw in a new light , I've always wanted to use one in this manner but thought they were for lighter duty use but I see if all the right precautions are met it can see cut this material !!!!!
