    Antony picture the rudder in a strait line forget the hindge and the different turning circle, the boss and pin holding the rudder straight has to turn and in doing so turns the same way as the rudder

    If your still around, I've watched this video over and over and still can't figure out what causes the flapper to turn in same direction as primary rudder....my pathetic common sense would indicate it would want to move in opposite direction. Is it that flat "wall" behind the flap strut that gets it to begin in that direction? Work with me on this as I'm not a complete moron...

      Anthony Brown I think the purpose is to allow greater deflection without having to turn the rudder as far. The flap deflects the prop thrust further than just the rudder alone. Maybe you're thinking of it like a trim tab on an airplane's horizontal stabilizer?

      The motion is due to the non-concentric relationship of the main rudder shaft axis to the follower rod linear bearing housing axis.
