Roundtable: Amid Tributes to Queen Elizabeth, Deadly Legacy of British Colonialism Cannot Be Ignored

  • We host a roundtable on the life and legacy of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, who died Thursday at the age of 96. She was the country's longest-reigning monarch, serving for 70 years and presiding over the end of the British Empire. Her death set off a period of national mourning in the U.K. and has thrown the future of the monarchy into doubt. "The monarchy really has come to represent deep and profound and grave inequality," says Cambridge scholar Priya Gopal, author of "Insurgent Empire: Anticolonial Resistance and British Dissent." We also speak with Harvard historian Maya Jasanoff, Novara Media editor Ash Sarkar and Pedro Welch, former chair of the Barbados Reparations Task Force, who says the British monarchy's brutal record in the Caribbean and other parts of the world must be addressed. "The enslavement of our ancestors has led to a legacy of deprivation, a legacy that still has to be sorted out," says Welch.

Many people, especially children were tortured and murdered by the British colonial forces in Malaya, now Malaysia. We are not demanding the British to kneel down on their knees and apologize to us. Our sole aspiration is for our national treasures such as jewels, gold bars, manuscripts and etc to be returned to us. During British colonial days in Malaya, many local chiefs were executed and their family members were left penniless. We want the British to compensate their descendants in monetary form and the British royal family must acknowledge the past murderous executions.

The Commonwealth Nations are there voluntarily and not forced to call her, or King Charles III now, head of state. They are free to call referendums at any time. Her family has undoubtedly profited from colonialism but each generation goes farther than the previous to right those wrongs. There is a segment that thrives on the profitability of anti-racism whilst engaging in largely performative actions. Surely even the poorest Britons are better off than their ancestors and have socialized medicine and housing. HMTQ is getting as large an outpouring of love as Diana, disabusing the notion that she is reviled. The energy crisis is a result of universally approved sanctions placed on Russia, hardly a progressive action and one being promulgated by labor and Tory alike. Traditional liberals are being called traitorous by the New Neocons who now laughably are calling themselves the standard bearers of liberalism. The monarchy brings much wealth to the country - they will remain who they are whether UK becomes a kingdom or not. Many in the commonwealth became incredibly wealthy after independence- those are the folk who should be looked at to be paying reparations. First of all, I thank you for doing your duty to the society as journalists by presenting an alternate view.
This duty of enabling the populace to see all sides of a situation is essential to grasp the situation fully, for a healthy democracy to function,so an informed view can be formed, which can evolve, in otherwords keep changing, a sign of growth, not holding a view, forever, to show one does not flip flop, as is promoted as a virtue, these days.
One of the deficits of present generation is not learning the history, how these remnants and forces manifest today, making those links and understanding the full picture. The population is readily swallowing the junk given to them, any old story.
As the Indians and other colonies paid for the looting of their countries , paid for the armies that oppressed them, while the slavery went on, their people died in world wars, while their role is not really acknowledged even now fully, unlike the Canada, Australia etc. they jeep harping about, kept them in jails and in poor education, living standards, the present day populations mostly working class, pay for the royals, mostly working class, pay for the ceremonial continuation of this class and their landed gentry, helped by the media, even the ones the citizens pay like BBC.
This is very clever. Just by acknowledging past atrocities and doing nothing, they getaway scot free, as the slaves are very loyal. We thank you my lord.
Their living is paid by the tax payer, the ceremonies paid by the tax payer while the ideological programming to maintain the status quo going on. They just have to present themselves, sit pretty and we are ever so grateful. This is true of all global monachies.
The play is subtle but true. The power does this to the societies all over the world.
It is interesting to do a peice of research to publish the cost of the royals, who are morally no superior to anyone, except they are rich and find put the money they bring to the country by contibuting subtly to tourism.
I feel they can support them anyway, and the people who are obsessed by them will go see their castles anyway, so nothing need doing by paying for them now.
The media can keep the interest going free by few scandles here and there and it will be a cheaper way to get the job done.
Please do the research on behalf of the society.
The parliamentary can govern as they do without the royals.

The British empire was already on its way to disappearing when Elizabeth acceded the throne. When India achieved its independence in 1947 -- five years before Elizabeth became Queen -- that was really the beginning of the end. For her part, Elizabeth became a champion of the emerging, voluntary commonwealth.
Elizabeth is not responsible for the sins of her forebears. She was not born expecting to become Queen. And she wouldn't have been, but for her uncle's recklessness in abdicating the throne. The role was thrust upon her at the age of 25. It wasn't the life she particularly wanted for herself -- by all accounts, she would have been perfectly comfortable as an English country wife, tending to her dogs and horses. Yet, she accepted her fate without a word of complaint, and did her absolute best to fulfill her role as honorably as anyone possibly could.
Nor was it ever within her power to redress the wrongs of her ancestors, constrained as she was by British law that forbade her from even expressing any opinions about political matters. Even much of "her" wealth was really the property of the Crown, as an institution, and was not hers personally, so she wasn't free to simply sell it off and return the money to former colonies.

I think it is important to understand it is not the monarchy that has died, but the Queen. Also that this Queen had no influence on the political actions of her government and could not make political statement which means it is her government in name only. Those who speak of the history of the monarchy before her should not speak as if she has lived the same life as Queen as past Queens and Kings who had political influence and are directly responsible for much of the historical atrocities inflicted on other nations. On the contrary, this Queens involvement with the nations past which Queens and Kings and the British government should be criticised for has been a positive one in which work has been done to build a family of peace out of those that were once enemies, and she has succeeded in this despite the continued attempts of the British government to test the patience of these nations and try to find ways to continue the exploitation of these nations. I as a person of African decent am sad at her death and have only positive feelings for her and this feeling is shared by many Africans except maybe those that consider themselves part of a woke culture lead by the West that has nothing to do with African culture and tradition and most Africans want nothing to do with. Unlike Western governments and their attitudes towards Africa, Queen Elizabeth the second has been a positive light and may her soul rest in peace. We will miss her. Peace and love

I would argue that on paper the monarch is merely a figurehead, however the deference shown to them makes me think that behind the scenes they in fact do wield influence. In 1975 the governor general of Australia dismissed an elected government, an unprecedented action. As the Queen's representative, he was meant to consult with the prime minister, however he consulted instead with the Queen and Charles, who apparently ok'd his course of action. The letters exchanged in this period are to this day hidden from the Australian people. The fact that the family were, until relatively recently, exempt from paying taxes etc leads me to think that their influence in protecting the institution ie "The Firm", is very much acted upon by successive British governments.

@@margaretcaine4219 WHAT ABSOLUTE IGNORANCE AND A PACK OF LIES !!! All documents relating to The Dismissal are now in the public domain. Do your research and discover that the Queen rejected the Governor General's assertion that the matter was a constitutional crisis and advised him that the matter was only domestic politics at play. The rest is history as now disclosed documents reveal that the Governor General ignored the Queen's advise and sacked the Whitlam government regardless. So your anger should be directed at only Kerr not the Queen. Having said that, at the snap election called immediately after The Dismissal Whitlam's Labor Party was destroyed and the conservative Liberal Party won by a huge landslide. So democracy won out in the end!

While there is much inequality in the world, it may not be the case that the solution is to pull down a constitutional monarchy. It is worth noting that having a hereditary constitutional monarchy solves a very sharp problem for a polity. It is an apolitical focus for national identity while being the centre of authority in the case of a a deadlock between power blocks within the nation, and it might even, if the role is filled by the right person, be a symbol of what the citizens of a country might look up to; that is, not to merely look up to the monarch but to look up to what the monarch looks up to.

I am fundamentally opposed to having a monarchy but please stop all this saying that we in the UK are taught to worship and respect them - we are not. there are many people in the UK who do feel that way about them but just as many who are completely irreverent. They are the continuous butt of jokes and are criticised constantly about being worthless and expensive and utterly pointless. Not just in private but in the mainstream media. I have met Charles and Camilla many times due to my job and i just call them Charles and Camilla - i do not bow and you do not need to show any deference. I am vaguely interested in her death as a historic moment - just as i am in other world events but life does not stop here and i am not in a period of mourning. I am off to a festival in the park today and a medical appointment and then out for a meal - my Grandchildren are off to a party at a theme park. People are getting married, children are being born and everything is open - the only visible sign i have seen is the flag at the church round the corner is flying at half mast - but they are going ahead with their antique fair today as planned. Yes our mainstream media is giving blanket coverage and that is fine - many people want that just as we get extensive coverage of the Olympic - something else i am not interested in - but all the cable channels and netflix etc are still showing their normal schedule - which is what we watch anyway. Life has not changed and will not change for anyone in the UK - i personally would abolish the monarchy but they are pretty irrelevant to day to day life and so am not bothered enough to spend time thinking about them - not like climate change or the war with Russia - that actually matters! I am not having a party because she has died and i am not cancelling a party because she has died - i am getting on with my life completely unaffected by her death just as everyone else around me in the UK is.
