Thank you Paul really interesting never seen chick peas grown and harvested before but really enjoy eating them
madeline brooks We're going to try fresh chickpea felafel as Richard's found a recipe.
Lol, watching this to try to find out how best to harvest my plants
Nice watching and listening
Super helpful video, thank you!
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching!
So I was just checking you tube videos on how to grow chick peas after your comment saying try growing chick peas. and I get a minute into this video and realise it's you Paul, excellent. Xxx🌱🌻🌼🌲🍁🌹
Some fun, some food, it’s all inside this Chickpea Plant 🌱
Very cool to watch!💕
Excellent video! I've never actually seems chickpea plant this was so exciting! I will be growing some and had zero idea what to expect, now I cannot wait!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've never grown them before this year, since they were new I've grown one plant. ;) It's doing really well and is covered in green pods. I can't wait to harvest!
Good luck! They are not needy plants once they get going. 😊
Can one purchase chick peas from the supermarket and plant them? Do they need to be soaked for some time before planting? And third question, can chick peas be picked when they are green? For information, chick peas, also called channa in the Caribbean can be soaked overnight and deep fried, then mixed with salt and garlic and they make a great snack. You can also add some hot pepper if desired. It is a healthier snack than peanuts. You can also add curry powder to the soaked peas, add some potatoes and have curried channa and potato.
Yes you can plant dried chickpeas...just like seeds. They can be used fresh as green chickpeas and they are delicious!
900 Kilos. :) I imagined Richard coming home, opening the door, and a mountain of chickpeas pouring out!
I forgot to mention in an earlier video, you have Vera down pat. We do get her in BC on the Knowledge Network. I love the British Mysteries.
Jon in rural BC, Canada
We love a bit of Vera!! Not sure my impression is that good, but you're very kind to say so!
Yum, yum, yum - great harvest!!! I love that pop too (bladder wrack seaweed) - nature's bubble wrap. ;-) Can't wait to see the falafel. :-)
They're currently chilling in the fridge before cooking them. They look good. Recipe seems reasonable in terms of texture... video to follow!!!
Fab! :-)
Bladder wrack, indeed. And I was only paddling in it ten days ago so I should have remembered the name! 😀
Thanks for the info 👍🏽
I am watching again
Nice chick pea
Do you remember how many chickpeas plants did you grow there?
Paul can't remember. He thinks about 30.
Nice harvest 👍😀
It certainly is.. really pleased with it. 😀
Paul, did you sow these direct? I picked up some seeds in wyevale.
Paul tells me yes he did sow them directly into the soil.
Interesting video .. I grew a big batch last year . I got hundreds of pods ..... but no chick peas inside. When I say none, I really do mean 0 . Not one . From tens of bushy green plants and all those pods. 🤔.
I have tried growing more this year but in different places in the garden. (Last time it was in a newly built/filled raised bed). More pods have appeared this time but too early to tell if they have the chickpeas inside.
I was just wondering if you know if there's is anything which I should/could be adding to the soil....to help with the chick pea production (not just the pods) ?..
Hi Rodney, we've never experienced this so it would be difficult to say what caused it. I know that some growers experience the pods being opened by mice but this is noticeable as the pods will be off the plant and discarded. Have you tried a Google search? Sorry we're not able to help.
Love chick peas...make a great houmous...I bet it's a time consuming prep
And they're very nutritious too...
I shelled them all during a two hour conference call!
🥰💚👍
Please let us know how you eat and cook them . I've never seen fresh chickpeas before , and will be very interested in how they taste fresh . I thought they could only be grown in hotter countries, but with what we are experiencing at present , it makes a difference. Forgive my ignorance Paul !
They are lovely raw too..full of nutrients. They taste quite pea like.
Richard Hammond
Thank you . The peas look quite large , I realise that the ones I buy are pretty shrunken when so dry , but they do taste good in so many recipes
Christine - this is the first time we've grown them so we have no idea about how they would do. Vivi has grown them for a couple of years though most of hers were eaten by mice last year. We are going to make falafel this afternoon and I think Richard is going to record it.
I soak them overnight, then roast them slowly until they're golden brown. The smell of roasted chickpeas smells like delicious bread. After roasting then cooling, I grind it into fine flour (Vitamix blender). I use the flour for pancakes, waffles, and banana/dessert breads.
Excellent ❤️ ! Thanks for sharing!
Paul can ypo grow these indoors without bees?
You would have to pollinate the flowers yourself by using a paintbrush or giving the plant a good shake. 👍
@@paulsavident that why I see most of the indoor chickpeas in these videos only foliage. Will try this, thank you.
Hello Sir impressive harvest I wanted to know did you plant a dry chickpea seed or a green one I have dry chickpeas wanted to know if I can plant the dry chickpeas. Thanks sir Happy gardening Sir
They were dried organic chickpeas planted straight into the ground in May. I think they took 10 to 12 weeks.
Put your dried chickpeas in some water, like you would if you were going use them for cooking.
Rather than leaving them for 8 to 24 hours leave them in the water for around 2 days, in a very dark place, and when you come back they should have sprouted.
They hate any kind of root disturbance, so don't bother potting them on, instead put them straight into the ground or the container you plan to grow them in.
@@ultrademigod I'd rinse after the first 24 hrs then three more times over the following day to ensure a healthy sprout
Can you leave them green to eat
Yes...I used them green to make falafel.
What is your guess on how many ounces of dry chickpeas will one plant produce? Thank you
Do you know any machine that can shell the chickpeas?
There probably is but I've never seen one.
Dear Richard,
If you had both chickpeas and regular peas, would you compare them by tasting both, and see what the flavour is like.
Your Friend, Benjamin.
P.S. I misspelt "flavour," it's "flavor" here in the U.s, "flavour" is in the other countries.
Also check out this website: www.thymeandtides.co.uk It is made by another RUclipsr who has an awesome garden!!!
Absolutely great idea Benjamin, but we don't currently have any peas. But I can explain... chickpeas are firm in texture when they're fresh... regular peas are a little softer. Chickpeas are a little bit more 'nutty'. They don't have much of a flavour really...I guess they are slightly tasting like regular peas. Next time we have a harvest I will do a comparison!
I already follow and subscribe to Thyme and Tide's channel! Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching 😀👍
@@RichardandPaul If you put salt on cooked regular peas, if you bought them, they would taste amazing!!
love this, thinking of growing some but where can i buy the seed?
You can use dried chickpeas that you can buy.
Too annoying with all the ads
