  • Here a video edited as gift for my previous Flatmate (2014). He arrived in Sydney without any apnea training. In three month, he went down to the 15m mark... Impressive.
    Good mate, good time. Hope you will enjoy as we did.
    This video may also be very interesting to people who wants to see the underwater life in Sydney and around. Each spot has its own life; dont hesitate to write a comment if you want to know where is the best place to find each species.

      There are quite a few places. Clovely, Gordon bay, Maroubra south, La Perousse, Inscription point, Shelly Beach and a few other that I dont remember the name ;-)

    Great footage, great edit! Where did you see the Sand Tiger?

      +Tim Horan Thank. The nurse shark you see (sand tiger sharks) were all spotted in South Maroubra at the far end of the bay. follow -33.955930, 151.264543 on google map. Google Shark cave as well. If you go there dont forget your float as there is often some boat around. cheers

    What about shark island in sydney? what type of fishes are there. Any idea? Awesome video shot mate.

      +ojie mojo Similar as you see on this video. However, I am not a big fan of the Darling Harbour... I am freediving mainly, and to my feelings, too much exposed to the bullsharks that are living in this area...

    i love this man... what would you suggest as one of your fav spots and spots you suggest for beginner divers? i never see that much fish in one area that don't run away from you!! haha
    i have gone to gordon's and la perouse and malabar. do you swim close to bare island? if so, whereabouts? i have found conditions to be too choppy recently to dive near the island.
    please join sydney freedivers and friends on facebook! we would love to see your videos !

      +tilky For beginner. But I mean snorkeling beginner not freediver beginner;-). I usually bring them to clovely, gordon bay or shelly beach. The south part of Marabra is really really nice too, but can be quite tough !!! The step on the south part of botany bay is full of life too, with different depth and good drop off !!! But visi can be a problem.
      La perouse is definitively good for intermediate freedivers but visibility is often poor. While it does not look that full of life, you can always make crazy good encounters (and some big if you see what I mean)... and there is always divers. I love that because it makes me feel so free to be able to swim among them with ease and feel that they dont even realize you are here... Love the freedom
      I am no more in Sydney though but in queesland.
      Why not a trip to the coral sea? The rum runner is a fantastic small boat. They would be super keen to take a group of enthusiasts freedivers.
      Here the last trip:

      Quite long video though. sorry

    Great Video!
    How did you get the footage so smooth? Such as the Stingray and the shark between 0:12 and 0:16 and 0:39 - 0:42. All on a gopro i assume.

      Thank. I guess my best advice would be to remind you all the time to be as steady as possible. You will never be too slow when shooting underwater. The wild life likes calm and slow movement as well.

      Thanks! I didn't think it would be that smooth just from being hand held alone.
      I was thinking of maybe shooting in 2.7K and then using software stabilization to crop to 1080p, so thought a similar trick may have been used here.

      Always get the best footage possible (I am still working hard my skills by the way ;-)). I dont believe in the "fix it in post". Moreover, post-production stabilisation tends to "liquify" your footage. Be careful with them even if they can help.

      Of course, Post production should only be used as a last resort. I know what you mean with post-production stabilization.
      There is one method though which is very commonly used when you want to do 3d CGI onto shot footage where you actually track the movement of a distinct object. There should be a stabilization technique that uses this data on top of a crop to 1080p that simply moves the frame around, however that is only possible if the footage is already fairly stable and does not pan.
      What you have in that video is amazingly smooth for no post-production, well done!

    where did you see the cuttlefish and the weedy sea dragon?

    • @giacomottoj
      @giacomottoj  9 лет назад +1

      The sea dragon in this video was spotted at "the steps" (Inscription Point), South Botany bay. Cuttlefishs (3) were spotted by order at Clovely, Bare Island (La Perrousse) and the steps during the same session as the sea dragon. Cheers

    The footage looks amazing. Thanks for sharing. I am interested to try night time snorkelling in Clovelly. What was it like. Do you see much? Any luminous creatures?

    hey thanks for linking the video, really liked it.
    can't wait to get back to sydney again.
    so many spots to check out.
    any places you can recommend?

    • @giacomottoj
      @giacomottoj  9 лет назад

      Yep mate. If you never dived in Sydney, start with Clovely (easy and nice), you have on the other side of clovely a more open water space named Gordon Bay. I also recommend night dive at Clovely and Gordon bay as it is usually quite active. After go for Bare Island (La Perrousse) if you are good, and in the south side of Botany bayas you have also some good spot but with poor visi (like "the steps" (Inscription Point)). There is also little bay beach which is very nice but you need to go far in the deep. Finally, south Maroubra is fantastic but you need very good condition and flat see if you are snorkeling from the shore.
