The Jantar Mantar, located in Jaipur, Rajasthan, is a historical astronomical observatory built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1734. It is a collection of 19 large-scale architectural astronomical instruments designed to measure time, predict eclipses, track celestial objects, and determine various astronomical coordinates with exceptional precision. The observatory exemplifies the scientific advancements and architectural ingenuity of 18th-century India.
The most prominent instrument at Jantar Mantar is the Vrihat Samrat Yantra, the world's largest stone sundial, which can measure time to an accuracy of two seconds. Other notable instruments include the Chakra Yantra, Jai Prakash Yantra, and Rama Yantra, each serving specific astronomical purposes.
Jantar Mantar is part of a series of five observatories constructed by Sawai Jai Singh II, with others located in Delhi, Ujjain, Varanasi, and Mathura. The observatory was designed to create a more accurate Zij (astronomical table), as existing ones failed to match the actual celestial positions.
Over the centuries, Jantar Mantar faced periods of neglect, particularly during political instability. Notable restoration efforts were carried out under British rule in the 19th century, including work supervised by Major Arthur Garrett. In 1876, Maharaja Ram Singh undertook further restoration, reinforcing the instruments with materials like lead and stone.
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jantar Mantar continues to attract visitors worldwide for its historical significance and scientific achievements. It stands as a testament to India's rich astronomical heritage and the brilliance of its ancient scholars.
