This video is something that as far as I know, very few people get to see.
The progression of a development heading, is something very few people participate in and get to see the advancement of. I hope this video will shed light on the steps required to efficiently advance a development heading.

Nice to see some underground content here......over 20 years in gold, silver and base metal underground mining from Cobalt Ontario.....and north including Kirkland Lake, and many different mines in Timmins Ontario. I have mainly stuck with Jacklegs ans stopers....longtoms....and the last 10 years I drove Alimak raises.

You outdid yourself with the production quality on this one. You've got some beautiful (and big!) equipment to work with. Down here by the Mexican border, we've got 70s and 80s EIMCO and Young's machines. 1 and 3-yard LHDs, a pneumatic jumbo, and soon to be a five-ton truck.
Headframe Hunters those pneumatic jumbos used to make my brain feel like it was shaking lol.
@@JoryDion Well, the pneumatic jumbo kind of blew up so it's back to jacklegs lol. The hydraulics are pneumatic as well so the tramming engine can be shut down while drilling, but the air motor exploded and the hydraulic pump failed.
@@Porty1119 Bummer, sometimes you dont realize how much you love even an old beater jumbo until it blows up and back to drilling rounds with the jackleg lol .
@@JoryDion Yup. I'm considering picking up a long tom to replace it since the jumbo has been parked for the foreseeable future. How do you like those machines? I found two for sale up in your neck of the woods.

Something I'm not sure about though. How do you manage to be involved in every stage of the development cycle? How does scheduling work between the machines and other operators? It seems like the machines get a lot of downtime by parking up.

That's a heck of a coincidence; I just stumbled across references to the Cross/Caribou mines on MSHA's database. Are they worked as conventional rail mines?

@@carlswenson5403 Nice! Do you know what type and size of equipment they're after? I know MES in Idaho Springs has a good variety, and a contact of mine in Moab has quite a bit of older rubber-tire. I bought a five-ton truck off him last week that should be going to work at a mine in western New Mexico.
@@Porty1119 we've picked up some equipment from a mine in .. NM .. but the other pieces will be falling into place this winter or next spring. we just got a two boom jumbo, a pair of old lhd's, a pair of excavators and a dozer, so we may be short on liquid assets

I was going to narrate this one....I haven't stopped making the video's but what comes next I am unsure of. The story boards just kinda hit me...what exactly to explain and how sometimes is difficult.

Hey Jory!! Thanks for the awesome video man. My dad is a retired underground copper miner with 35 years experience working at the Freeport mine in Papua, Indonesia. Mining in Indonesia it's a family business, my uncles, cousins, and brother are currently working at the mine. It brings back memories when my dad told many stories of how he started 30 years ago drilling blast holes with jackleg...LOL and his favorite word to the new generation miner, "You don't know shit about mining until you have use to jackleg, LOL," I think it's his sarcasm to the jumbo operator to drill the holes faster so they can double blast in one shift....yes, crazy...Anyways, i grew up in mining town and met many mining contractors from Canada. Majority of them work for Redpath, Inc. a Canadian company.
Mining is family business here also. My dad uncle and grandfather where all miners including my brother now lol. Trust me family dinner night was all drill and blast !

Great video! Just curious why switch to laser navigation instead of total station navigation?
Hamza Jaffri laser / drill bit navigation is less work for engineers. Total station is highly accurate and much more expensive, also takes a lot more commitment from engineer because they need to provide tunnel plans etc.
Also this is mining and total station was used in the tunnel

@@TheLastRezort27 Not sure about the USA, In Canada there is work but it is hard to find for someone like me who is a jack leg miner. I have no mods for mechanized equipment. I do wonder how hard it would be to find work in Australia.

would you call yourself a development miner? im just starting out in ontario the past year and im just noticing there are lots of different types of job titles underground. development, rehab, construction, shaft sinking, alimak or some guys seem to just do certain jobs like bolter, scoop operator,....like how long does it usually take for someone to get to your level?
Dustin Brosko yes I am a development miner. I do the drifts that go to the ore bodies and a production miner is a long hole driller. Rehab is repairing drifts shift is dev miner but going down and Alimak is dev miner that goes up. I’ve been mining for 15 years all in lateral development. A lot of where you get to depends on the opportunity you are given and how you excel at certain tasks. Some guys are really good bolters so they just bolt because that’s the best for production. Usually to get on a jumbo you have to already be proficient in mucking bolting and blasting and drilling. So how far you get is really up to your skill level. Some guys never make it off a truck cause they are slow 🤷♂️.
U out did your self again sir . I have only one question what are buttons on the face ?
Buttons are like the very smallest of bootleg. Clearly no powder in them but u can still see a dot on the face from a blast hole from the last round. If it’s not a bootleg it’s just a “button”, referring to the carbides on the end of the bit showing up on the face.

Pay attention to what the operator does so you can always be a couple steps ahead . Jumbo should never have to wait for anything . Plug him in and get what ever he needs so the drill

Jory Dion was awesome seeing you run 2 jack legs at once I thought I was good but that was mint if only I could get 2 rebuilt good enough to run at the same time we’re mining in some hard granite and it seems impossible to get them running long enough to drill 3 rounds before I have to rebuild them
@@jarrodmasters4149 moister in the airlines and not enough drill oil is what always kills our machines. I use ALOT of drill oil on jackleg, like dump it in the gooseneck lots...We got some new Canun jacklegs with the anti vibe handle and they used so much oil it was unreal.... like 6 bolts and they would empty the lubricator.

Why would I use a bar when I am so far away from everything? It is safer and more effective to use a machine .
Just before you grub hoed your lifters for example. Different mines different rules. But pretty sweet so much cabbed in gear at that mine.
@@Derrick_Neill Ya ill give you that one, hand scale before digging lifters is best practice. I would do this 100% if I was bringing in a deck or loader to sign off the face before drilling...having no bootlegs to wash or circle I admit I am skipping the deck / scaling step. All that being said we do have scaling bars on the loading truck and X-Decks, I do scale as I go when loading and work top-down. Thanks for watching
@@JoryDion we have to screen to 5' grade right to face and drape the face with screen and pin it with jumbo before we can even go near the face to markup and grub hoe lifters. a lot of loose gets knocked down during the pinning phase and the drilling phase .. so usually not a lot to scale away with a bar pre loading. ps Sidewinders are fun to drill!
@@MrMikeMe We do the screen and split set the face sometimes if the ground is very bad.
why do you keep your leading edge a full screen length from the face? id get my ass nailed to the wall for that
It is not required in some ground conditions. Different ground conditions have different support requirements. The back is always supported to the face only walls hang back a little bit.
@@JoryDion Have you had the chance to try any of the "highspeed" bolting with a 421 splitboom jumbo?
@@joshuacourtney4708 as far as I know high speed bolting is just split sets? I have done lots of ground support with split feeds and it is very fast. I have only been on Epiroc e2c split feeds but would love a 421 or 422 with split feeds.
@@JoryDion Its been pretty new in canada but they use an 8 foot jumbo splitset that has a rock bolt inside of it. Sandvik makes them called shark bolts. No resin needed and can be drilled and installed with a jumbo. Nicest part about it is that you can use a 6 by 14 foot screen instead of smaller stuff.
