He always listens when Sango needs to talk about Kohaku. He has his issues, but so has everyone of them. He has some issues about opening up to someone in a serious way because of his past. He watched his father die and he doesn't want someone close to him have the same pain about his death, so he makes sure not to get too close to someone. On the other hand he doesn't want his blood line to end. He wants the curse broken. That's why he finds himself oscillating between wanting to be with Sango and not being able to live in peace with her. And he cares deeply about her happiness. He has shown many times that he would give his life for her and that he thinks about her first. For example in "Only you Sango". He leaves the decision to her to go or to stay with the prince. Kagome interprets this as lack of action readiness, when it is from his point of view a freedom he wants to give Sango as an individual, to make the desicion to live with the prince or go the dark pass for revenge (which is the unhappy life in his opinion). But it's important that he left the choice to her. He is not perfect, he has pervert traits, but this isn't all to him. And he respects her as a person. That is the right basis to fall in love with someone.
