  • We're taking a look at presets in Adobe Lightroom this week. I'll be editing one of my landscape photography images and going over what I think is the best way to use presets in the software.

That's an interesting use of the sky flip in the water, I've got an image I'm working on at the moment for a future video and I may incorporate that as it's a similar type of result (and is quicker than the way I was doing it!), will give it a try anyways. I've loads of thoughts about presets and their pros and cons, I could write a book (well maybe a blog!) so far too much for the comments section but it was a good vid mate, haha the opinion disclaimer at the start - I've pinned that as a comment to so many of my videos!! 😉

Thanks for watching Dave. I'm sure there will be a neural filter for it before too long, but for now I think the flip and mask method does the job. That's my opinion anyway. Definitely just my own personal opinion. 😂

Hi Robert, have to agree wit you i personally never use presets or the auto tone button, by the time i looked through all the presets for something that works for the image im on i can just do it manually far quicker , but thats is just how i work so im not knocking anyone that does use them, if it works for you it cant be wrong . Nice one mate :-)

Well I do use auto tone. Nearly all the time in fact. But importantly, it's just a starting point and I'll adjust accordingly from there. As you say though, you've got to do what works for you - the end result is all that matters really. Thanks for watching mate. 😊

Great look at presets Robert. For me, they are about as controversial as other people feel about sky replacement. I don't really use them for my landscape photos or for images I feel are my best work. However, my other photography passion is documenting things you find on the backroads of America (Americana) and I use presets I've developed because I am trying to curate a very specific look (kind of a 1970's film look). One thing I don't understand is buying someone else's presets, not when you can develop your own. Just my thoughts. I could go on and on, but I won't. Great video mate and fantastic information as always!

Thanks Paul. I think really what it comes down to, is that some people want a shortcut. But as you know, a good edit usually takes a lot of work, and a preset is not going to cut it just by itself. I don't think I've seen your Americana stuff - do you have a separate account for that?

Thanks Robert, 1) i don't use presets! 2) I don't use Lightroom, I use camera RAW, with either bridge or photoshop, Lightroom makes my IMAC crash, so i go over it big-time, yet i seem to be able to use camera RAW in bridge and photoshop, without the same issue, I am keen to see a Video on luminosity masking, thanks mate, don't get me wrong i love your workflow videos

Cheers Tony. On the editing side of things Camera RAW seems just as powerful at Lightroom now. I've made a note to make a video in the near future. Thanks for watching.

Great idea flipping the sky. Must see if I can use that in a photo. As for presets, I’m not much of a fan as I feel you end up having to edit the image anyway. Maybe someone starting of in editing and wanting to understand how the sliders work, could be good for them. But no I have never used a preset.

Thanks Paul. Agreed. Also - it takes some of the fun away, I think. Cheers for watching mate. 😊

Image processing has developed to image cheating. Photography should avoid it as long as aiming to document reality and not being abstract art. Both are needed, but separately!

It's a very interesting and subjective topic. Personally I'm very comfortable with processing images (with some exceptions). It's nothing new - Ansel Adams did a ton of dodging and burning in his images. Also, I'm not sure what the alternative is. You could shoot in JPG, but then the camera is applying a lot of editing to your image automatically. At least shooting in RAW and editing yourself gives you control of the process. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. 😊
