    The effects of english and pacing of the video are very well done. It seems there’s always more to learn about all the variables involved when using English. Thanks.

    I like you videos. They are clear and instructive. One thing that continues to frustrate me is understanding the effect of Low left,low right, high left highright. It seems clear to me for the normal spin right, top, bottom and left but the influence imparted on with the combination of two different spins at the same time puzzle. Me. Can you make a video with a technique to figure this out? Thanks so much for your help.

    Good video. My issue is knowing where to aim when using sidespin so I Don't miss the pocket...

      A-Train Maybe this will help--first, and very important, practice at first using short shots (1-3 feet at the most). Also, use a measle ball (with the red dots) or a striped ball so you can track what the cue ball is doing. Finally, make a very conscious attempt to shoot softly--a good thing to do in any case. (ALWAYS shoot only as hard as needed to make the shot and get position.)
      NOW, about aiming. When I use left or right spin, I start by aiming my shot center ball. Then, if I'm using, say, a half tip of left spin, I move the ENTIRE CUE, AND MYSELF to the left in a parallel move. This is to keep the cue straight. if the cute is just tilted, the shot won't go in. That's the problem most people have when using spin. You have to shoot straight, even though your cue is now a little to the left of your original shot line.
      (I mentioned moving the cue AND MYSELF--if you move your cue left in a parallel manner, you have to STEP one-half tip to the left also. Otherwise, you're a little out of line. Doesn't seem like much, but on those long difficult shots, it matters. Things like this will make you more accurate than someone who doesn't do them. By about a half tip.)
      Practice some extreme shots, just to familiarize yourself with them, but 90% should be soft, slow and smooth, with a nice follow through (that gives you the best kind of result--one you can predict after awhile)
      All this assumes your stroke is good. A good stroke makes everything work in pool.
      If you aren't satisfied with your stroke, work on that first cause spin, masse, topspin, draw, and stun shots all work much better with a nice stroke.
      Good luck and BE PATIENT! It'll pay off in time. Hey, if it was easy, anybody could do it. (I'm still working on it every day, and I've been shooting for over 50 years. Still love the game.)
      Take care. 🎱

    Can you please explain the concept of aiming before applying either spin?

    • @shawnr771
      @shawnr771 5 лет назад +4

      Most applications of english are very rarely more than one cue tip.
      Much more than that you risk the chance of miscueing.
      Make sure you chalk well.
      If you have the opportunity to practice.
      Line your shot up normally then move the tip of the cue to the desired english. Start with incremental movements 1/4 tip etc.
      Your point of impact will change slighty.
      When applying right english you cue ball will hit to the left of the desired point of impact.
      On shorter shots this is not really a factor unless you are applying a lot of english or hitting the cue ball too hard.
      I use the concept of the GHOST ball to line up my shots.
      When applying right hand english I imaging moving the center point of the ghost ball slightly right to compensate for the leftward movement of the cue ball.
      If you do not have to use left or right english DONT.
      Use the control of speed offered by hitting high low or stun shots to keep your shots simple.

    How about the aiming if you put right/left english?

  • @Mickster114

    Applying English can make life so much easier! But the aim adjust depending on distance, angle, amount of english, elevation, etc. is truly tough to master😫 whenever i do play pool, i try to apply English when necessary but I simply dnt play enough to master this skill. I wish i had a place for a pool table in my home, that way i can ALWAYS practice. I can only go out of my way to play billiard so many times. Plus, its not free to play. So finding time and money to master this skill is nearly impossible rn...☹️

      Mahdee I can sympathize with you. I am in a similar situation and it is very frustrating. I love the game, but do not have enough room for a pool table (even if I could afford it). As well, I live in a rural area and the closest town with a pool table is many miles away. I do have a chance to play a few games every couple weeks at a friends house, but never a chance to practice between sessions. I have no answers, but just thought I’d let you know that there are others in the same boat as you.

      Brian Barstead there just simply arent any answers for individuals in our situation lol. It is nice to know im not alone on this boat though. It sucks but i guess all we can do is play when given the chance🤷🏻‍♂️

      I make sum time here and there to practice yur right those english shots are hard to master a low deflection cue helps u use english and in most cases duznt throw the shot off . its good practice to aim to the left an inch or so wen using right english or vice versa . practice! 💝🎱

    • @rawhideleather
      @rawhideleather 5 лет назад

      @@robertgomez7229 Nope, you have it backwards. If you are using right english then you need to adjust your aim a little to the right (on the object ball), not the left.

    the best way to have more precision and to pocket balls consitently is to play stun shots or a little bit of drow and only play sidespin if necessary for position, but again i am coming from a snooker background and that's what i am used to, but american pool players tend to play all the shots where the cue ball contacts a rail with spin.

    Are you using front hand english, (sidespin) via moving your bridge hand over to hit on the side of the ball after aiming on the shot line (spot of contact of object ball to center pocket ) or are you using back hand english ( moving cue held hand to pivot cue over bridge hand to hit side of cue ball), or combination of both. This is very important when explaining english, also there is using your brain/instinct of practiced shots to make up for deflection and how it comes into play. Dr Dave understands this and explaines it in detail. This is a misleading and probrably frustrating video to the beginning pool player trying to understand english(sidespin).
    Please take this as constructive critacism as I myself had been instructed so many times without them even understanding the reasons why english works some times but not others. Understanding this game is so much more than just practice!

      @@robertgomez7229 ... You obviously don't understand what "ground thing" was getting at. He made an extremely valid point..the two types of side english will have monumentally different outcomes....in this video he should have explained which type of side he was using.

    My problem was what english to use on the long shots. Is it better to have a slow long stroke or a snap shot?

    • @basementbilliards4062
      @basementbilliards4062  6 лет назад

      Jaja, it is important to have a smooth and consistent stroke with a straight follow through the ball. Often times, players tend to curve the stick in the direction that they want to spin the ball which can lead to a miscue or send the ball away from the pocket.

    • @joeygonzo
      @joeygonzo 6 лет назад +3

      Don't use english to pocket a ball. Use it for position purposes. Don't use English unless you have to

    • @jbsang54
      @jbsang54 5 лет назад

      So you're saying just to use a straight shot on the pocket.

  • @alexpaic2984
    @alexpaic2984 6 лет назад

    So here’s the thing. For someone like you very experienced comes so naturally and experience people know it but for starters I think you went little fast. Hard for them to understand physical motion behind every shoot. I know is hard to explain the side spin in 3 minutes but pace plays important role too. Throw also a factor. Hard to cover everything in 3 minutes but great video anyways. Keep it up bud.

    • @basementbilliards4062
      @basementbilliards4062  6 лет назад +3

      Alex, thank you for the feedback. However, this is less of an instructional video and more just a drill that once mastered will make a difference in other shots around the table. These shots require hitting the ball over and over again and a lot of practice to master so a drill is best for learning how the cue ball will react.
