5 MUST-HAVE Photo Gear Items for an Architecture Photographer

- If you're in real estate and/or architecture photographer, you know that "needed" gear goes beyond just a nice camera & lens. I go over my top 5 personal favorite pieces of gear as an architecture and interiors photographer.

When I discover a new channel I love, I go to the old videos and start watching almost every single one. This is one of those channels. Question: after three years of this video, would you add or remove any gear mentioned here in your current workflow?
1. Tilt/shift lens
2. Foldable Reflector/Diffuser
3. Softbox+battery powered flash
4. CamRanger 2 (so you can see your photos with ipad from far etc...)
5. High quality TRIPOD
Great content, thank you. What black/white cloth do you recommend? Something specific to photography or will any cloth from a fabric store work?

100% agree with all of the items in your list (CAMRANGER 2 is mandatory). In mine, I add one : LUMU light meter (plugged into your Iphone). Pretty useful to setup the basic exposure and the White Balance in 2 clicks. One warning : yes you need a very good tripod + head, but if you are 60 years old like me, do take care of the weight ! Of course it's much more pricy but your back appreciate. Thank you for your videos Matthew.

Sorry if this is a silly question, but if I want to wirelessly tether, what's the difference between doing it via the cam ranger & using the Canon live shoot app via tablet?

The exact one I have is the Benro TMA48CXL Extra Long Series 4 Mach3 Carbon Fiber Tripod
Fun interesting video. I’m an architect and used a Pentax 67 for a long time but one day shooting a tall building for a friend I had it and went and got an Arca Swiss medium format 69 camera. Absolutely the best way to fly. The 4x5 lenses all had great image circles.
Now I use a gfx with native lenses but also Laowa 15mm, canon 24Tse, and the Pentax 645, 35mm, 45-85 which by the way is very impressive. Definitely close to Fuji glass. I also use the Canon 100-400 v2 which is surprising useful in account of close focusing ability.
I mention all this bc I’m sure I’m very atypical. I’m just used to medium format. Thot you might get a kick out of this approach.

I'm currently shooting a Sony A7iii with a Sony 24-70, 2.8 GM lens. I'm looking to add a second lens to my kit. I'm considering the new Sony 14mm 1.8 GM prime or the Sigma 14-24 2.8 DG DN zoom. With real estate and architectural photography (and video) in mind, would you recommend either of these? Your advice is greatly appreciated.
If it was me, I would 100% go with the Sigma 14-24. If you're looking to get artsy bokeh with the prime, its going to be tough shooting at 14mm unless your subject is extremely close to the lens. Plus the Sigma is going to give you WAY more versatility.

Very helpful video! How do you determine which focal length shift lens is best for any given room size including height?
I might try the different ones I have on a specific composition, compare them, and see which ones looks best IMO and/or the opinion of my client.
How does the Photoshop corrections compare to tilt/shift lens?
What geared head do you use or recommend? Also, would love to see a video on your flash power setting and how you decide what is the correct flash exposure.
Its a Manfrotto 410
I do not need a shift/tilt lens when I am using a camera body that has a shift/tilt lens mount and a shift/tilt back.

Good list. CamRanger 2 is great, I just wish it were built a little bit better... I also have a Benro tripod like that (the XL one)-I love how high it can get, but would not buy the Benro geared head again-too much play in it which causes a lot of mis-aligned shots when I'm compositing (I'm always compositing!). Need to replace that soon... But hey, at least it's arca-swiss compatible! I hated the manfrotto plate on the 405 I used to have.
Never used the Benro geared head before but I've heard similar things about it. Agree with you 100% on the Camranger 2... a great product but the build quality is a bit subpar. I'm always worried that one of the antennas is going to get snapped off.

I hear ya, mine's covered in duct tape to keep it together and keep the flimsy aerials on and has glued on velcro so I can attach it to camera. Other than that...it works lol
Funny, my Benro gearhead is tight and no slack at all.
It’s possible that you need to tighten the screws under the plates.
I’ve also got the Benro Mach 3 tripod. Some complain that it’s got slop on the column.
I did find that screwing the column tighter stopped it.
I use the sony app to remote shoot with my camera. I thought that made the cam ranger obsolete. What additional benefits does it have that I am missing?
I can't speak for all features of the Sony app. I've only used it a handful of times but did find it to be a bit glitchy. Transfer speeds seemed a tad slow and the range from the camera was more limited than I'd like. That being said, the Camranger isn't perfect either. I've been using the Camranger for years and it's simply baked into my workflow now (like many other arch photographers). Features-wise...there's many other videos on YT that can explain all the ins-and-outs of the Camranger much better than I can.
@@MatthewAPhoto Thanks for responding. I have noticed the app is far less glitchy now than it was a real ago. I would feel stupids showing up to a shoot and taking 5 minutes to connect my phone only to lose the connection repeatedly, but now connecting and reconnecting is only a few seconds. The transfer speed does take a few seconds which is a bit slower than I like. Changing the aputure is much slower than I would like. I noticed the Canon app is faster on both accounts, but I am not ready to switch back to canon.
