  • HMHS Britannic, launch and construction during 1914 at Harland and Wolff shipyards, Belfast. After the outbreak of World War One, Britannic was requisitioned for use as a hospital ship and was repainted white with a horizontal green stripe and large red crosses and was renamed HMHS (His Majesty's Hospital Ship) Britannic under the command of Captain Charles A. Bartlett. On 21 November 1916 Britannic was on her eighth voyage when she struck a mine off Kea Island and sank in less than an hour. 1,125 crew and medical staff were rescued.

Thank you so much for posting these videos for us to see. I have been an Olympic Class historian for what is basically my entire life. When I was six I saw a Ken Marschall painting of the Lusitania sinking and I've been hooked on ocean liners, particularly the Titanic, ever since. Britannic was always something special to me and I've always been intrigued by these ships. They all have a certain soul and life of their own and the fact that Titanic will soon be gone but Britannic will be around for a long time to come just makes me want to see her. These ships have always had a very special place in my heart and it really feels good to see that I'm not the only one. Thank you again for all of these videos and your dedication to keeping the memory of these grand liners alive.
    -Rob

There was a rumored Ceric up to 60,000 GRT, Britannic was 48,158 GRT.
      So Britannic 48,158 GRT
Germanic 33,000+ GRT an intermediate between the express trio and the older big 4 she would have been an updated Adriatic.
Ceric who know what she would have been like.
A possible sister for Germanic WSL had a tendency to order ships in pairs.
The war sank Britannic and killed Germanic and a possible Ceric .

BRITANNIC II would have modern day technology well hidden. My ship would have about 355 to 485 live on board guest. And a crew complemented around 568. Mostly of ex Navy people who have the best training in the world. This ship would be the best looking ship in the world. I would give RMS BRITANNIC II the life that the original one never had. Just as Titanic was meant to be greater than the Olympic, the Britannic was meant to be greater than the Titanic. I had never realized how incredible her grand staircase was meant to be until I came across "Britannic: Patroness of the Mediterranean" done by the "Titanic: Honor and Glory" guys. You can view her as a hospital ship but you can also view a good portion of her as she was meant to be. The grand staircase is absolutely stunning with deep, dark, rich colors (versus the lighter colors used for her sisters) and not anything like I'd imagined. For anyone that's never seen it for themselves, you can find plenty of the "Patroness" videos here on RUclips. Her interior isn't much to look at in her hospital form but the other option is incredible. It's just a shame she never got the chance to be what she was intended to be.

This is absolutely amazing! As someone with a lifelong fascination with the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries, particularly maritime history, this is a terrific discovery. This footage really captures just how meticulous and precarious construction on the Olympic Class ships and overall shipping industry was. I believe the launch footage was rediscovered in the early 2000s, but the funnel installation is something I've never seen before and shows their immensity. Where did you find this archival footage? It'd be worth my while paying a visit to theTitanic Quarter in Belfast and perhaps gaining some access to the Cunard Archives in Liverpool. The Maritime Museum and outstanding Museum of Liverpool are brilliant and were thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you for putting this together with the sound and music, and especially for sharing.

+Mathieu Vercetti - While it's certainly true that "Gigantic" was initially considered as the name of the third "Olympic"-class sister, the actual reasons for her name being changed to "Britannic" - as well as the exact point in time that decision was taken - have never been disclosed, and as such are a matter of conjecture. While it's certainly a possibility that White Star wished to play down any sense of hubris following the "Titanic" disaster, it's also worth considering that the British lines' primary competition came from Germany, and the German liners tended to carry more "patriotic" names (e.g. "Vaterland" and "Imperator"); at a time of increasing tensions, naming the third sister "Britannic" could be seen as a response to this.
