- HMHS Britannic, launch and construction during 1914 at Harland and Wolff shipyards, Belfast. After the outbreak of World War One, Britannic was requisitioned for use as a hospital ship and was repainted white with a horizontal green stripe and large red crosses and was renamed HMHS (His Majesty's Hospital Ship) Britannic under the command of Captain Charles A. Bartlett. On 21 November 1916 Britannic was on her eighth voyage when she struck a mine off Kea Island and sank in less than an hour. 1,125 crew and medical staff were rescued.

Thank you so much for posting these videos for us to see. I have been an Olympic Class historian for what is basically my entire life. When I was six I saw a Ken Marschall painting of the Lusitania sinking and I've been hooked on ocean liners, particularly the Titanic, ever since. Britannic was always something special to me and I've always been intrigued by these ships. They all have a certain soul and life of their own and the fact that Titanic will soon be gone but Britannic will be around for a long time to come just makes me want to see her. These ships have always had a very special place in my heart and it really feels good to see that I'm not the only one. Thank you again for all of these videos and your dedication to keeping the memory of these grand liners alive.

The stern is my favorite part, looks kind of futuristic
the bow is my fav.
it looks cool and it looks espically more cool with the closed Promenade . sorry i cant spell.
*here we see the giant liner being fitted out as they installed the funnels masts and the beatiful interiors.*
It would be wonderful to dive to Britannic's wreck in Greece. But I believe it stays only as my dream :( I've read that they want to make it as underwater museum for tourists. I'm really interested in Titanic's generations ships ! This was really bigger than her famous sister.
Bigger only in volume I believe. Her dimensions were slightly bigger due to the addition of the double hull among other things. But the only major difference was the tonnage
@@doyoulikedags3534 she was just as long and 1m wider..also major diferences in the stern as the space betwen aft castle and superstructure was enclosed and a new superstructure was placed on the back (all to improve third class installations)
@@sparrowlt oh and she had some differences to improve her amenities plus new amenities in second class!
@Railfan 765 i dont doubt your info but all sources i can find quote the same 882 feet and some 3 or 4 feet wider than the other 2 ships.. any info in those extra 8 feet? that would be interesting
@@sparrowlt Yep according to the Museum in Belfast both ships were indeed 882ft long. Britannic couldn't fit in Titanics dry dock because she was slightly wider than her sister ...The museum in Belfast is fantastic and well worth a visit
It's sad that we didn't see the RMS Britannic instead she quickly turned into H.M.H.S Britannic
so sad that she never experienced a normal transatlantic voyage. But you can see on Google Images, plans and depictions of her interior. Very lavish.
You can also check out Britannic Patroness of the Mediterranean to get a more visual view of her interiors and her exterior
One of the most beautiful things ive saw, my sister being built. -Me, Olympic.
Its pretty sad that they never replaced the Titanic with a fourth Olympic-Class liner to still fulfill the dream of the White Star Line, to have two ships at port and one traveling on the ocean.
There was a rumored Ceric up to 60,000 GRT, Britannic was 48,158 GRT.
So Britannic 48,158 GRT
Germanic 33,000+ GRT an intermediate between the express trio and the older big 4 she would have been an updated Adriatic.
Ceric who know what she would have been like.
A possible sister for Germanic WSL had a tendency to order ships in pairs.
The war sank Britannic and killed Germanic and a possible Ceric .
2:22 I can't believe all those guys were allowed to just stand there, waiting to get potentially crushed!

Oh man, that ship was really beatiful, even like hospital
Rip britannic
Rip titanic
Rip Olympic

quite eerie.
If I was extremely wealthy rich. I would have a modern day clone copy of RMS BRITANNIC II built in harland and wolff ship yard. In Belfast Ireland. This ship would serve as my floating home. BRITANNIC II would have modern day technology well hidden. My ship would have about 355 to 485 live on board guest. And a crew complemented around 568. Mostly of ex Navy people who have the best training in the world. This ship would be the best looking ship in the world. I would give RMS BRITANNIC II the life that the original one never had. During the ships first voyage it would go around the world.
Hi young sister Britannic
Im yours shipwreck
fun fact at 3:39 you can see the propeller that killed 30 people.
Impresionante video esas personas construyeron los barcos más hermosos que tiempos.
Just as Titanic was meant to be greater than the Olympic, the Britannic was meant to be greater than the Titanic. I had never realized how incredible her grand staircase was meant to be until I came across "Britannic: Patroness of the Mediterranean" done by the "Titanic: Honor and Glory" guys. You can view her as a hospital ship but you can also view a good portion of her as she was meant to be. The grand staircase is absolutely stunning with deep, dark, rich colors (versus the lighter colors used for her sisters) and not anything like I'd imagined. For anyone that's never seen it for themselves, you can find plenty of the "Patroness" videos here on RUclips. Her interior isn't much to look at in her hospital form but the other option is incredible. It's just a shame she never got the chance to be what she was intended to be.
Great Video! But there's some kind of blurring artifact at the bottom of the video during almost the whole video.
Thanks. Yes I think it is blurring out a logo or something like that on some of the clips, most likely British Pathe or BFI. Was the best version I could find unfortunately.
Something so ominous in the beginning with the music thinking about the Titanic.
And yet Britannic is the long lost sister she should be talked about a lot more like Olympic and Titanic
Amazing video!
I Wish RMS Titanic Missed The Iceberg While HMHS Britannic Beached And The Olympic Hawke Collision Never Happened Also We Could See Picture Of Three Ships Of The Olympic Class Docked Together
Anyone know what that structure on the stern was for? Titanic and Olympic didn't have that feature... I thought a docking bridge but why enclose it? idk?
Why no film footage of the Titanic launch

Yeah. I agree. A time of true progress and pride when these ships were made.
Proud of you too sis(:
At the time it was R.M.S.
Britannic was never a Royal Mail Ship. When she was finished she was taken over by the British Government as a hospital ship, due to the war.
It would be RMS Britannic
Or Royal Mail Ship Britannic
@@jimcrawford5039 it was going to be RMS Britannic, until she was used in the war serving as a hospital ship. She was called HMHS Britannic because it meant His Majesty's Hospital Ship. Besides the ship was requisitioned to be a hospital ship. If she never was a hospital ship, then she would've been called RMS Britannic.
It was gonna be RMS Gigantic but became HMHS Brittanic

No one cares of this ship only its 2 sisters are important
No one cares about you
HOSPITAL SHIPS ARE IMPORTANT. THEY SAVE LIVES. unlike titanic who as a person would be a STUCK UP BITCH AND OLYMPIC PRACTICLY HAS A DAMN CUTTING PROBLEM CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENTS AKA 1911,SOUTHAMPTON,BRITAIN COLLISION WIT HAWKE. AND THE 1934 NANTUCKET COLLISION
How. Dare. You. This is simply arrogance by a person who doesn't know how important she was and is. She is the largest Passenger Liner currently on the sea floor! BRITANNIC was going to be the first vessel on the seas with an ORGAN! SO MANY things about her that were important. So think twice next time before laying down your mad critique on the World Wide Web.
Um who wants a order to report this comment
Hospital ship is more important to they help wounded soldiers bruh and no one cares about you
This is absolutely amazing! As someone with a lifelong fascination with the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries, particularly maritime history, this is a terrific discovery. This footage really captures just how meticulous and precarious construction on the Olympic Class ships and overall shipping industry was. I believe the launch footage was rediscovered in the early 2000s, but the funnel installation is something I've never seen before and shows their immensity. Where did you find this archival footage? It'd be worth my while paying a visit to theTitanic Quarter in Belfast and perhaps gaining some access to the Cunard Archives in Liverpool. The Maritime Museum and outstanding Museum of Liverpool are brilliant and were thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you for putting this together with the sound and music, and especially for sharing.
Her workers are so joyous of her as she was launch. Many of them worked on Olympic and Titanic, and many were heart broken when they got news of the disaster some of them cried. Can you imagine how crestfallen they must've been when they learn Britannic sunk and faster than Titanic did.
Just excellent, great choice of music went amazingly well with the launch scene, great job.
Thanks Simon, I appreciate your kind words.
I'm amazed that Britannic's promenade deck wasn't closed in fully from bow to stern say if Titanic didn't sink and the three sisters were docked at the same time you could tell them apart how sweet would it have been to see Olympic Titanic & Britannic at a dock at the same time we can only dream
yeah but in that case britannic would not have her gantry davits, those were added because of the titanic disaster
I thought the gantries were installed after the lusitania sinking?
It’s all a dream we will forever imagine if all 3 sisters were docked along side each other
What’s crazy was the fact that Olympic docked beside Titanic after she shattered her propeller blade and we seen the famous photo of Titanic and Olympic side by side then years after Titanic sunk, Olympic docked beside Britannic and we’ve seen the two sisters alongside each other in numerous photos it’s crazy how Olympic was photographed along with her two doomed sisters
@@RobloxianXas well as her bulkheads wouldn’t have reached all the way up to A deck and she wouldn’t had a double skinned hull if Titanic never sank
She was too beautiful for this world.
7:10 those guys up on the funnel, then reaching for the ladder with his foot like I do when I'm trying to get off my house roof. OSHA definitely frown upon this!
I'm so glad photography was a thing back then. Imagine all the cool stuff we missed out on during the Viking and Mayflower days!
What a fantastic video I’m glad the camera was around at the time to capture these historic moments.
Why wasn't this used in a night to remember? It's better then using some random modern ship.
In some shots in A Night to Remember, they used the Lusitania. I have wondered if newsreels of the Olympic and the Britannic were lost to time, they could've used those for scenes of the Titanic's launch and her sailing off to sea. Using the Lusitania and that random ship takes you out of the experience
A night to remember was filmed in 1958, by that time not even the Olympic could’ve been used, a lot of scenes were filmed on the queen mary
gigantic was even bigger than titanic!
Gigantic was never built.
Pyke Bishop Gigantic was the name of Britannic but they change the name because they didn't want to look like dicks who were flaunting the size especially after Titanic sank
They never officially called it gigantic
No such ship.
+Mathieu Vercetti - While it's certainly true that "Gigantic" was initially considered as the name of the third "Olympic"-class sister, the actual reasons for her name being changed to "Britannic" - as well as the exact point in time that decision was taken - have never been disclosed, and as such are a matter of conjecture. While it's certainly a possibility that White Star wished to play down any sense of hubris following the "Titanic" disaster, it's also worth considering that the British lines' primary competition came from Germany, and the German liners tended to carry more "patriotic" names (e.g. "Vaterland" and "Imperator"); at a time of increasing tensions, naming the third sister "Britannic" could be seen as a response to this.

How come the Britannic has a launch vid while the Titanic only has pics?
Titanic's launch was actually filmed - entitled "Launching the Titanic (31 May 1911)" by Films Limited of Belfast/Animated Weekly/Gaumont. However it has unfortunately been lost.
Oh man. If only her launch vid didn't go missing so that all three beautiful and legendary Olympic class could have a remembrance they existed.
