That statue guy on the bench is Guayaquil's mascot. He's called JUAN PUEBLO.
He represents the average Joe from Guayaquil. He represents all of us.
Back in the 80's he looked different though. He use to look dirty and his clothes were dirty, old and had holes from so much use. He looked poor amd homeless. Unfortunately at the time Ecuador was 80% poor, so it did kind of felt at the time that him looking poor made sense.
On the 1990s our mayor decided that Juan pueblo needed a make over. He shouldn't look poor anymore. At this point the local government began to embrace Juan pueblo as our ambassador/mascot.
He was originally only on political cartoons on the news paper, but after the make over, you started seeing him on tv ads, statues and signs.
Juan Pueblo has been representing Guayaquil for decades.

@@AmeliaAndJP I met the guy who created JUAN PUEBLO at the journalism school back in the early 80’s. He was a teacher there and had a comic strip going in one of the local newspapers. Sorry, can’t remember his name but he offered me a job drawing. Super nice man, fair skin, white hair, wearing a yellow “guayabera” shirt. Don’t know why I still remember him after all these years. 5:56. This guy is Juan Pueblo. He was created by a known artist, Virgilio Jaime Salinas, in Guayaquil. He's an iconic character of this city and pretends to be the personality of a Guayaquileño overall, so that includes no difference between social classes and how big the citizens' love is for Guayaquil.

Thank you guys for giving us a glance of La Perla del Pacífico to those of us were born there, and have not returned in a while. There are so many other places in the country that easily eclipse Guayaquil in terms of natural beauty, but Guayaquil is the economic engine of the country and a historic pillar of our yellow/blue/red identity. Guayaquil has a large population and that creates its own set of issues, but the positives outweigh the negatives. Salud!

You guys are changing my perception of Guayaquil and I can see now why so many people love it. When I moved to Ecuador in 2014 and shipped 1.6 tons of stuff I had stored in Miami, I had a horrible experience receiving it in the Dole Port Terminal in Guayaquil. It took me an entire week of back and forth paperwork, line ups, waiting and waiting, payments here and there and ended up having to bribe a crooked inspector on a Friday afternoon. I was being represented by this facilitator who ended up negotiating the amount of the bribe and I am pretty sure she got perhaps half of it! I was at a point where I just couldn't take it anymore so I paid up the 300 bucks so I could finally get my stuff all loaded up to a truck I had hired and drive back home to my peaceful finca far away from there in the middle of a mountain in Carchi. I had no other option at that point and was disgusted by that situation. This Port Terminal is somewhere in the southern part of Guayaquil. Dangerous place outside that terminal and crooked inside, no place to sit, a lot of waiting, no restrooms, no place to get water or something to eat. I had to spend days in there! It was torture! My friends down the little town in Carchi, close to the finca didn't let me go alone to Guayaquil afraid I'd be mugged or something so I ended up with 3 of them as "body guards". That was the fun part of all of this. We laughed a lot at a lot of stuff such as all the bumps on the road to Guayaquil and how to find Guayaquil as there is little indication on any of the roads. On that Friday afternoon we were all completely fed up and just wanted to go back home, out of that nightmare. I just hated Guayaquil after that so thanks for showing me the good side of it I didn't have the opportunity to get to know.

Don't believe everything they tell you about. Guayaquil is really nice, you guys should make it in the dry season, is very chilly weather and most likely you'd enjoy it. @@mikejunior211 what is really funny is the fact "quiteños" try turning the tables around. They know their deal. As sad as it is, big city problems includes delincuency, luckily we only deal with muggers and pickpockets overall. Quito on the other hand always deals with kidnapping, drug trafficking, even slave trafficking, including what I previously mentioned about Guayaquil. So as a big city, we are far safer than Quito. Difference is that all eyes are always focused on Guayaquil's next move. What will our major do or say, what will the plan be for Guayaquil the following weeks. Ecuador won't ever mention Quito's issues, despite being beyond problematic. The nerve though.

Quito and Guayaquil are both unsafe cities compared to cities in Europe. I have to visit one of the ports in the southern part of Guayaquil sometimes, but I don't feel safe in that area. I also drove around somewhat in barrios on the Isla Trinitaria. What a shame that is. It seems to me that nobody feels responsible to upgrade that area. Very low (almost none) investments from the government.

Lived in Guayaquil 46 years ago, while in the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps office for the coast back then was in an office building on corner of Ave Boyaca and Nueva de Octubre. Never hiked up your photographed climb during my two years living and working in Guayaquil..... but played a lot of basketball on weekends at the Politecnica nearby at its base. Very different ambiance back in then in the 70’s. Your hill climb was the one area of Guayaquil considered a bit too dangerous at the time to wonder up and around, even during the day. Drugs, crime, etc. Certainly no numbered stairs. Only the occasional backpacker visited Guayaquil back then. I returned for a visit a few years back. Very different now. Also used to camp out at the base of La Punta on long weekends..... walking back to Montanito where women would cook us fresh fish. No road on the last part of the journey from La Libertad. No surfers or tourists. Had to get there by driving the beach at low tide. Nice videos. Watched sever last night. Enjoy life on the coast and in Olon. Thanks.

I was in Guayaquil from Oct 31. These holidays, the major parks and walkways were all closed. We were only able to enter the restaurant/bar area of Guayarte. The COVID issues close so many things. Also, no alcohol sales Thursday through Sunday! You only have to be careful of some of the areas off the major downtown spots. Watch the far end of the Malecon 2000, it has less people and is a bit sketchy.

Those extra photos will come in handy when you need a visa for another country. You should put Rapa Nui on your travel wish list. You probably know it as Easter Island. Chile of which Easter Island is a part is very much worth a future visit. The Andes between Chile and Argentina are spectacular. Torres de Paine Parque Nacional in Chile is the equal to any of America's best National Parks. Then there is Patagonia which is very much like Southeast Alaska and totally awesome. One word of advice for insuring the continued growth of your excellent channel is don't venture into anything political. Your viewers already get too much of the craziness in the US. Where's the your signature Hawaiian shirts? My standard look is Hawaiian shirts, shorts and ball caps especially in the dog days of summer in Arizona.

I love this Channel I just found it today I am 23 and I live in the United States just one hour north of New York City I finally visited Ecuador for nine days in the beginning of October my biggest fear of my life was flying that’s why took me so long to finally spread my wings and get on an airplane for the first time at 23 I stayed at the Wyndham hotel for my first three days and Puerto Santa Ana Guayaquil and I also visited manta for a day and then I stayed for five nights in Riobamba and then I stayed one night in Guayaquil at the holiday inn hotel because I missed my flight The reason why I went there is because my in-laws or my future in-laws all live there but they came over to see me most of them Live in Logrono Ecuador which is very very east about eight hours just from Guayaquil I will be returning in April and I will be staying for two weeks and I will be visiting a lot more places in Ecuador I will go back to Puerto Santa Ana I will visit Salinas I will visit Cuenca & Logroño & riobamba and possible visit for Quito all in 16 days then I have to return back to work in USA I couldn’t believe how beautiful that country was I was so scared to visit thought I would get robbed or killed or kidnapped my dad thought the same thing because I live it home with him still but I absolutely loved it and had so much fun and was very upset at the airport when I had to return back to the US I actually cried for a little I can’t believe it’s already been three months since I’ve been back in the US and only three months till I return I had so much fun there more than I can ever imagine I cannot wait to go back I wish I could stay for more than two weeks I wish I could stay for two months and I loved how I was able to live like a king over there because everything is so affordable compared to the United States especially north of New York City area and believe it or not Covid is handled so much more better in Ecuador than it is in the United States like the precautions it’s unbelievable that’s why I loved it over there and felt so safe and sound every night there

When you go back to Guayaquil, could you video the 10 acres of wildlife zone at the Parque Historico in Samborondon . Also, if you have enough time, could you video the Jardin Botanico Guayaquil. Since Guayaquil is the largest city in Ecuador, their parks, zoos, and theaters are the biggest and best in Ecuador. Sort of like the biggest and best are found in New York City in the U.S.

Regarding passports, I live in Baja California, Mexico, and when I renewed my passport a few years ago, we use DHL here too. Absolutely no problem. Received a notification that it was ready for pick-up in Ensenada and obtained it. Enjoyed your video as always. Saludos

Please forgive me for my broken English, you can pay the embassy fee using your credit card on their website and printing the receipt as part of your paperwork. At least that’s possible for B1/B2 applications as long as I remember.

    Hello Amelia and JP!
Glad to see you enjoying the sights of Guayaquil. I was wondering, where are all the people? But, business hours are different down there. Not 24/7 like here in the U.S., L.A.
Anyway, always a pleasure to see your videos. The sprinkling of Spanish is a good reveal to your viewers that Ecuadorians love their Spanish. They can be total show offs with it at times.
    Cheers!
    ---Eddy from L.A.

That was beautiful. Thought maybe you would do a Rocky pose when you got to the top! 🤣 💪 I don't think you had your drone when you did that video, but it would be cool to fly the drone around the top of the lighthouse looking down. I read somewhere Rose's are one of the biggest exports of Ecuador. Do you know where they are grown? Or maybe that's false information. Thank you for all the valuable information.

Hola Monte. It is true, EC grows and exports amazing roses. I'm not sure where they grow though.
