Me and my wife have lived in Ecuador for over a year to learn some spanish, now we went back to our home country to finish up some business before moving back to Ecuador, During this time, we have been watching your videos, and it makes us more excited for moving back ASAP! Thank you Amelia and JP!!! Keep it going 👍🏼
Dears Amelia and JP. My name is Luis A. Hidalgo. I am 71 years old, and during my childhood my family, friends and I spent our school vacation time (three months) there. My father and friends were the ones who discovered this paradise back in the early 50's. My father MD. Luis Hidalgo, MD. Guillermo González, Mr. Gabriel Gomes, Mr. Bolivar Plaza, Mr. Luis Savonivch, Mr. Xavier García. I started going to Ayange when I was 7 years old, more or less, there my brother Francisco and my sister Maria took their first steps. When we went on vacation, we were a group of friends, of about 20 boys and girls, who had our paradise in the rocks, underwater tunnels, fishing spots, our pequeño Acapulco, and a black sand beach. There was no drinking water, electricity, telephone, refrigerators, etc. It was cooked with charcoal. We lit up with Kerex lanterns, and our parents came on weekends with drinking water, food for the week, boxes with ice, etc. We woke up in the water, helping the fishermen of the town to remove the nets full of fish, for which they gave us one or two that we took home for breakfast. we bought bread in town. When the tide was as low as in his video, we went to the change and in the flood, with perforated buckets to take out clams for our mothers to prepare seafood rice. At low tide we usually go to take oysters from the rocks, we take lemon and there in there. We had all kinds of shellfish that you can imagine, ax shells, mussels, lobsters, blue crabs, crabs, sea dogs and giant hermit crabs that came out in the TRASMALLO (small long nets) that fishermen left out on the rocks all night long until next morning. I have so many good memories of those years in Ayangue, that I could write a book and never finish. We had Toby's Club and Little Lulu. The nights were wonderful, we made bonfires on the beach and lowered with guitars to sing in the light of the moon. It was incredible to enter the sea at night or at dawn, the water always warm and pleasant. I'm not going to extend any more, I just want you to know that if you ever return to Ecuador, I would like to meet you and maybe with a coffee or wine, talk about my youth life, the best years I lived in Ayangue. Thank you for visiting my country, and thank you for that wonderful video of my most precious place on the Ecuadorian coast. AYANGUE. Luis Alberto Hidalgo Arizaga lhidalgoa@gmail.com
What makes the difference is the Humboldt current. It runs parallel to the coasts of Chile, Peru, and Southern Ecuador making among many effects, for a very arid and dry weather and terrain. This current starts to veer west around Ayangue heading back to the open Pacific Ocean towards Polynesia. This is why, Olon being just 1/2 hour away North of Ayangue has a different climate, terrain, and even fish species. The Humboldt current does not affect Olon and the Ecuadorian territory north of Olon.
Based on JP and Amelia's astute and informative video ... It's my winter retreat from YYC beginning on December 2021 for at least five months. - Thank you.
This beach is so beautiful and tranquil! I love this! If I ever travel again after living in Costa Rica (but now back in 🇨🇦), I’d LOVE to go there! Those beautiful fuchsia colored flowers are called Veraneros (in CR) They’re gorgeous!
Amazing, was just looking at other "towns" along the coast last night. One of them was Ayangue. Wake up this morning and you just posted your video in the like the last 10 minutes and walla! Ayangue Ecuador, perfect timing while I set and drink my morning coffee. Muchas gracias
And let me suggest you, when in Ayangue, ask for HOSTAL CUCUBE, of Guillermo Gonzalez. Mention my name and chat with him, of what was Ayangue, and ask for all the stories we shared in our childhood. Ayangue, was, is and will be always a Paradise.
Thank you for all your videos about your life in beautiful Ecuador, I only started watching & liking a couple of Weeks ago, both of you are amazing in spreading optimism & happiness in any situation .. great job.
This sounds like the perfect part of Ecuador to consider for me. I'm planning on going this June. Your video's are informative and fun to watch. Keep inspiring.
There is one thing I really appreciate about you Amelia and JP I know you are sooo busy with all that you have going on but somehow, someway you still manage to answer questions posted here. I just want to let you know in advance that this is so appreciated. I do plan on obtaining a subscription To your community very soon. I also created a Facebook page where I can just connect with expats from Ecuador. Both in Cuenca and around the coastal communities you discuss as I am still torn as to where I would want to live as I love the city and of course the ocean as well... especially coming from New Jersey. As I mentioned, my daughter and I are going to Ecuador in the second half of May. We plan on staying in Olon for the first week and Cuenca for the second week. I actually booked that bed and breakfast you recommended in Olon I retired recently from Nabisco as I was a product developer of cookies crackers and snacks for 35 years in New Jersey. I will reach out to you before I actually come out in May to see if you have any time to share a meal with me. I would absolutely love to actually meet you both. You are celebrities for goodness sake who wouldn't want to meet you. Again, Thank you for everything you do. It's's because of people like you sharing your lives in Ecuador that I feel that I have already been to Ecuador. More than once in fact...Lol Now I know quite a bit more that there is to know before I actually get on a plane. God bless you both...Steve
You guys are great and she really lifts my spirits You got a good one JP There are other videos of three other couples reporting from the countries they live in. They are in beautiful places but you see literally only seconds of the place itself. Their videos are either always about being at a beach or ordering in a restaurant or them building their tiny home. The camera is always on them instead of what they are talking about. I feel satisfied watching yours instead of only frustration watching theirs. Thanks
Liked and subscribed. Really appreciate you guys taking the time to post this content. Ecuador seems so fascinating to me because of all the different climates within one relatively small country. Have you posted a video that discusses internet connectivity there? Curious how it would work teaching online music lessons from Ecuador to the States. Great channel!
We don't have a video specifically about the internet. We've been happy with the quality/connectivity in Cuenca and in Olón. Sometimes when we travel it isn't as good. We pay for an upgraded plan-75 up/down for $45/month.
Thanks Amelia and JP, Again you bring back lots of memories. I used to visit Ayangue more then 40 years ago with my family, we lived in Quito so it was our beach place to visit , it only had less then 100 habitants and only a half a dozen fishing boats . It sure has changed and modernized. Maybe I will retire there. I live in Sacramento currently. I miss the coastal pueblos of Ecuador.
As always great video guys I really like to see your channel I hope that a lot of people are watching the beautiful of every part of our country keep it up like this guys, son una pareja envidiable espero que sigan asi con esa humildad y carisma que los caracterizan greetings from guayaquil Ecuador ah como olvidar háganlo todo muy TRANQUILO Y BACAN
Glad you enjoyed it! The vaccines they have now are being given to healthcare workers. There are more coming in March and throughout the rest of the year.
Love your videos JP and Amelia! It would be great to see more vids where you talk with the locals and hear what they say about where you're at. And more restaurant-related vids would be great too to catch some of that "local" vibe. Cuidense mucho!
Hi guys! I enjoy your videos. I hope I can find myself in a country doing what you do and showing others what it's like to live and participate in another cultures from across the world. I will be spending some time in Japan this May as I plan which way to go and work. I am favoring Argentina right now, but I am also paying attention to your videos. Take Care!
Reminds me a little of Sua a long time ago. My family and used to go there often for our getaways. I know it’s different now but it was a quiet little town when I was a kid. This is my kind of place! Thanks for the video
What a wonderful way to start my morning. Have been subscribers to your channel for awhile now and always enjoy it. As soon as Tanya and I both get vaccinated, Ecuador is our next destination. Thank you.
I’ve only been to Quito, but I had trouble breathing and had to fly out the next day so I went to Columbia but the damage was already done I had high altitude pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and when I go back to Miami my doctor sent me to the hospital to get checked out and that’s what they confirmed
Wonderful..So I guess it's on you now to follow up on a cost of living video comparing Olon, Manta, Salinas and now Ayangue. I'm looking to move to Ecuador in about 3 years and concerned I'll be priced out of some area's due to popularity. Love to see what my money can get me in Ayangue.
The cost of living is similar throughout Ecuador. The main difference is the cost of housing, which can vary quite a bit. So you can generalize our cost of living videos by factoring in +/- for housing.
Great background music. I follow your channel because I can only dream of visiting there. I've wanted to go down to the other America to the Nazca plateau to look at the part of the universe that I've never seen from the northern hemisphere. If I had time, money and opportunity, I would certainly visit there. Thank you for helping me visit, if only on my computer. I hope you continue to do your channel for a long time to come.
Greetings Amelia and JP! Greg from Canada here. Great video once again! You've pointed out many aspects of Ayangue that would appeal to the gringo tourist. I would expect tourism will continue to grow as folks learn about it. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the "House Hunter's International" series, but coincidentally, I just happened to see one episode from 2019 where a US couple decided to build their dream part time vacation home in Ayangue, after not finding anything to their liking from a very limited housing supply. They built a gorgeous house for about $200K US (including lot) just outside town on a hill overlooking the beach. There were no other neighbours and their place was stand alone, without high walls or even a security fence that one is used to seeing in that part of the world. Didn't make sense to me as one would think they would be targets for vandalism and robberies given the house sits empty most of the time. I'm more familiar with Mexico but it would seem to me Ecuador would be the same, given the income disparities some of your videos have highlighted. Would appreciate your perspective on this. Are they sitting ducks? Thanks and keep the great content coming!
Good video thanks for the great info! Looks like a good place to think about settling. You said it is close to where for shopping and services at 6:42??? Thanks!
Hi guys! My husband and I have been considering relocation to Ecuador for quite a while now but our major concerns are finding jobs and basically making ends meet cos our budget is kinda limited. To the best of my knowledge and from what other Russian immigrants say after relocation, you can live fine with like minimum 100,000 USD.....And what are the chances to land a teaching job (English) in Cuenca or elsewhere in Ecuador these days? My Spanish is still like elementary but I just recently started learning it, so it shouldn't be a problem.... From what you have to say i might make a decision on whether or not we'll be moving from cold and aggressive russia any time soon....
I live in California, and am amazed at how economically a person can live in Equador. However, I haven't heard much info about recreational, and sport-fishing. I enjoy that here in California, and wonder about the sport-fishing in Equador. It must be great, and sure appears that way from the videos.
I am beginning to think we are going to have to work fast to find where to settle once we hit Ecuador - Cuenca, Salinas, Ayangue, Olon...one is spoilt for choice!
@@AmeliaAndJP Yes, it is! Our plan is to establish a base in Cuenca (where we've visited before and liked very much) , and then spend a week or two on the Pacific coast, checking out Olon, Salinas and Ayangue. It'll take a few weeks for our visas to finalize (we're going professional visas - thanks for the tip!) and it'll take a bit of time for our container to arrive. We have to find a place that's unfurnished, and that won't mind our two cats. We're very grateful to the both of you for the rolodex and the great content. It's made this a LOT easier.
Your videos are very interesting - You've got me thinking of Ecuador - where would you recommend a Septuagenarian that would like to live on a budget of 1000 or less. I've spent this am learning about the cost of moving to Ecuador. I will have to decide whether to take my rather large/complete set of wood shop tools as I will miss my hobby. I'm also a pretty good handy man and will miss fixing/building stuff.
Ayangue is a family member's favorite beach in Ecuador! I've been there a few times. The Malecon has been update in the last few years as you mentioned. There are now nice shops and places to eat/drink right near the beach. The only thing I'm not too fond of in Ayangue are all the boats near the beach. Other than that it's a really neat town!
Amazing place. Too quiet and beautiful sea and waves on the beach. It's a tourist town border to the Pacific Ocean Ecuadorian. I don't know about of Ayangue town. Thanks.
That's not quite right. We usually make it from Olón to La Libertad in a little over an hour, and it was 30 minutes to Ayangue from Olón, which is on the way. So maybe 40 minutes in traffic, but 53 doesn't seem right.
Thanks for the beautiful videos, very nice updates to Ayangue, it’s a very peaceful calm beach, love the fresh fish and seafood there, not sure if they still have the food Cabañas on the sand anymore, have not been there in many year. Enjoy !
@@Emmenimaliste If comments of fresh fish and seafood it’s offensive, It was not intentional, I am commenting about my country’s beaches and what the majority of the people traditionally eat around the beach from what I remember.
@@orlandoj3904 not offensive to me but to these marine sentient beings who deserve respect to their lives regardless of what human tradition dictates for them.
@@Emmenimaliste well from the comments it looks like someone got offended, otherwise why take the time and effort to criticize a simple Ecuadorian food comment, but I think trolling and judging people’s food comments is cheap, it will be better to preach this words to all the fishermen that make a living out of this trade face to face and see how they react. I will recommend to make a RUclips video about it.
@@orlandoj3904 I am Ecuadorian and I do not take part in animal exploitation of any sort. This is not about your feelings but about the victims you call “food”. If fishermen do that it’s because there is a demand for it. Who creates this demand? Those who perceive these sentient beings ad human food. Eat tofu and algae instead.
I Love Ayangue already!! The dry weather and sand sounds heavenly!! Plus the tranquil atmosphere with modern conviniences!! Can you tell us about hotel/ hostels or apt for rent? availabilty?
I just love your site. Such a sweet couple. Ecuador is really beautiful. I haven't seen any SOLAR panels, or I missed those videos. Any SOLAR companies there?
Beautiful video! It looks so pretty in Ayangue. We're planning a trip to the coast in a few weeks! Probably at or near Olón but if not we will stop by with some BBQ sauce. 😁 Love to you both!
A good friend has been traveling through South America the past few months and it was quite a treat to see your videos suggested to me by the almighty algo. :) I will probably never move to Ecuador but wow, the way you talk about your experiences from the mundane to the real important things sure make it very interesting. I am also vegan and I am happy that you guys are getting to live cruelty free out there. Subscribed. :) *And Ive been making my way through your old videos (I like how youve been changing up the intros :D)
Your ending of, "Have an unconditional day." Don't we here in the U.S. wish!!! Loud cars, loud police sirens day and night, people in a hurry to get to nowhere texting and putting everyone else at danger while driving. No quiet beach near here to bring the old blood pressure down..You have made the best decision possible! Thanks for sharing your experience.
Amelia has a smile that lights up a country.

I live in California, and am amazed at how economically a person can live in Equador. However, I haven't heard much info about recreational, and sport-fishing. I enjoy
that here in California, and wonder about the sport-fishing in Equador. It must be great, and sure appears that way from the videos.
How can it be great to take fish away from their living-breathing environment? Nobody likes to be suffocated.
Soooo relaxing
Looks like a nice little town
Hola Amelia and JP I’m the one who was driving around olon. And I saw you guys walking.
Hola Ray!
Good introduction....but can show more pics of restaurants.....places to shop, etc. thanks
Noted!
Great, thanks so much!
Nice video. Thanks
Definitely adding that to the short list
I am beginning to think we are going to have to work fast to find where to settle once we hit Ecuador - Cuenca, Salinas, Ayangue, Olon...one is spoilt for choice!
It's good to have options!
I had the best pork I have ever had in Ayangue!
Ja JP SPEAKS SPANISH . MUY LINDOS SUS VIDEOS
¡Gracias!
Great video guys ¡sois geniales!
Muchas gracias!
LOVE YA BOTH ... VERY BEAUTIFUL ....
Thank you!
Hi like the place just what im looking for
Amazing place. Too quiet and beautiful sea and waves on the beach. It's a tourist town border to the Pacific Ocean Ecuadorian. I don't know about of Ayangue town. Thanks.
Ayangue is 53 minutes by car from La Libertad (28 miles, 46 km) according to Google maps.
That's not quite right. We usually make it from Olón to La Libertad in a little over an hour, and it was 30 minutes to Ayangue from Olón, which is on the way. So maybe 40 minutes in traffic, but 53 doesn't seem right.
Awesome guy's lovely place.. I would like to be there..
Wow,I loved this Town ! Are there a lot of nice resort hotels there ? Thanks for another lovely video and the info !
There appeared to be a couple nice hotels with beach front amenities.
@@AmeliaAndJP Thank you!
Thanks for the beautiful videos, very nice updates to Ayangue, it’s a very peaceful calm beach, love the fresh fish and seafood there, not sure if they still have the food Cabañas on the sand anymore, have not been there in many year. Enjoy !
How can someone dead be “fresh”? Oh I forgot, fish are not even considered someone for most people even though they actually are.
We don’t have any info about lodging there. We always recommend AirBnB to start while you look for a permanent place.
Thanks for info. Is there public transportation a long the coast?
I just love your site. Such a sweet couple. Ecuador is really beautiful. I haven't seen any SOLAR panels, or I missed those videos. Any SOLAR companies there?
Solar isn't a big thing here.
Beautiful video! It looks so pretty in Ayangue. We're planning a trip to the coast in a few weeks! Probably at or near Olón but if not we will stop by with some BBQ sauce. 😁 Love to you both!
Yay!!! We can't wait to see you both 🥰
A good friend has been traveling through South America the past few months and it was quite a treat to see your videos suggested to me by the almighty algo.
Thank you!
Awesome, love the music !!
Glad you like it!
So beautiful 🙏🏽
Ballenita video :)
Lots of people want to see Ballenita so we will record a video!
Excited to get down there for our discovery tour. My wife and I would love to meet you two and buy you dinner. Planning in the next few months.
Hello my dear friends 👍👍👍👍
glad to know there is an alternative to Mexico
Hmmm, this little town caught my eye... especially the part where you said hospitals, shopping etc only 30 min away.
seems laid-back too 🤔
Norma; and not necessarily in that order! ;
That's good unless you are having a heart attack or whatever. Still I think that it would be a good place to be for awhile.
It’s a beautiful place 🥰
