  • I bought a new game for my Atari 7800 recently which, honestly, just blows my mind. A brand new title in 2019 (it released in 2018 I believe) for a console that didn't receive as much love as it should have. The developers, Penguinet, have pulled out all the stops and created an amazing looking, sounding and playing puzzle platformer that has a ton of charm. This is a preview that shows off the first level and boss. Enjoy!
    Also, if anybody is interested, they sell the game off of their website (where I bought) here - www.penguinet.n.... I believe they also sell the game on Steam as well.

    I'm blown away by what is possibly with original 7800 hardware! There must be a music chip, right? Also how big is that game!

      Yup, there is a chip in the cart. Sadly the 7800 alone can not produce that good of music/sound. On the plus side, Saint's new 7800 flash cart will be able to emulate the chip used so that homebrew devs could easily use it.

      The game is 512K, and is fully compatible with the 7800 game drive.

    Outstanding. Really shows you how much some of the older developers left on the table with this old hardware when someone doesn’t have to worry about money and time constraints.

    Very impressed by the wall/ground bricks. They look incredible considering they are made of 2 colors (and black).

    can't believe what I'm hearing.. shame on you atari for not giving any 7800 games the sound they deserved.

      Yeah, it's truly exceptional isn't it? This game, for the most part, has not left my 7800. It's so good in pretty much every way that matters.

    Do you know why Atari themselves didn't make such a cool game as this? Because its just hard to make good games.

    The second room, I throw the block like you do in order to get up high, but every time I jump on the block to get up there, I keep grabbing the block. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to jump on the block without grabbing it??? HELP!!!

    How did they get that sound quality?

    • @amerikaOnFire
      @amerikaOnFire  4 года назад +2

      They used a sound chip in the cartridge that gave them the ability to do better music/sound than the 7800 is actually capable of.

      I think everyone here knows this already but the Atari 7800 re-used the 2600's TIA chip for sound.
      It restricted the capabilities by a lot, because the TIA can only output two voices simultaneously.
      I was pretty surprised by the sound of this game as well. But in return, sad that I can't get a physical copy of this.
      I literally just discovered this today, only to find out I can't play it definitively.

      Not surprising. In some ways the 7800 was more powerful than the Famicom.

    Is this using stock 7800 hardware?
    Looks really good for an 8-bit game.

    • @amerikaOnFire
      @amerikaOnFire  7 месяцев назад

      Yup. This is real hardware. I did install an S-video mod so that it's cleaned up quite a bit. However, since then, I now have the 7800 Game Drive which has RGB out on the cart, so if I recorded this again, it would be extremely clean.

      This game is 100% running on stock 7800 hardware, it's just using a mapper to allow the console to address the 512K ROM.

      And, I think it's also a great testament to the idea that they probably made the wrong decision back in the day in most cases to favor the high color, but low resolution graphics modes of the Atari 7800 for most games, over against the low color, but high resolution mode which is in use here (same dynamic with the visually similar C64).
      They presumed that most gamers would connect more with high colors than with high resolution, and so we got ultra pixelated games with a lot less detail. Hey, at least they were colorful, right?
      This game has almost no colors going on at once, but has crisp, detailed graphics that I think look amazing. Much better looking to my eyes, at least. Then again, I tend to be more attracted to resolution than to color depth anyway. Probably why I also tend to generally favor higher res Sega Genesis graphics over higher color SNES visuals.
      Either way, a stunning example of what the 7800 is capable of - especially if we had gotten upgraded sound hardware (or at least if in-cart sound enhancers were more ubiquitous). Alas. The system that could've been so much!
