  • Did you know that the 3D Warehouse (3DW) can be both a good place to find models as well as materials? In this Skill Builder SketchUp tutorial, Eric shows you two different ways to extract and then import materials found within 3DW models.

Good tips there, didn't know about the downloading of materials from 3D Warehouse. On my PC the materials are found in "C:\ProgramData\SketchUp\SketchUp 2022\SketchUp\Materials"

So, if you bring them in as skm, and have them in your default library, do they carry over through the next upgrade or do you have to reimport them?

not reimport, just transfer the content of your material folder to the new one. same with extensions, components… (yeah, could be nice to have an "auto import from previous version" feature)

This is great, never knew you could do this. Even better that it downloads a sketchup file.

How to export and import one skm file from model or to model? Is there a quick way?

No 'fast' way with SKM since they're designed to be loaded from your library folder. If you're going from one model to another, just apply the material to a face/object. Copy that face/object and paste in your other file and it'll show up under 'In Model' materials.

How do you create an skm file from a jpg image?

I don't know a way other than what I showed by grabbing the SKMs from 3D Warehouse.
