Sorry, English is not my native language, but I'll try to explain. The noise you're hearing is most likely coming from a valve, which shouldn't be a major issue. The valve in question is self-adjusting (hydraulic lifters) and operates based on oil pressure. When the engine is not used for an extended period, such as during winter (for several months), the valve can become clogged due to the absence of oil. To resolve this, start the engine and let it run for a minute or two, then turn it off. Wait for about half an hour and restart the engine. I have successfully used this method with my 911 (997) as well.
You sure that’s the issue? I believe it’s something else bro. It’s hard to say without diagnostics, but I think the fix for it would be a waste of money so the car is only good for parts, but that’s cool you’re rolling in two Porsches and yes your English is bueno.

For anyone trying to figure out why the ignition is on the left side, porsche did this when they started building race cars. Back in the day, the race began with the driver outside of the car. When the driver enters, porsche thought it would be clever to allow him to start the engine while simultaneously preparing to shift, utilizing both hands to get going rather than one. If you don't know anything about racing, that half to a full second makes a huge difference, especially when starting from a standstill. You are welcomed.
Your response is an urban legend. I visited the factory in Stuttgart and this was discussed. The actual reason was financial. The design was much cheaper and easier for mass production. This design used much less wiring. So now you know the real story
What is the noise coming from the porsche? I had a car that made that noise a long time ago and i never found out what it was. Sold it cheap but now i kinda feel bad if it was a big problem.
Years ago I had a BMW 318 the old boxy shape, I think it was E19, and the cam belt split. A local scrap yard sold me an engine and took the old one out and put the new/used engine in it. I got it back and it had that ticking noise and I was like "just great" the noise was driving me up the wall. I took it to a main dealer garage and spoke to someone there, I've no idea of his role there, but he said "don't bring it here this lot will be messing about with it for days". He gave me the number of a small garage about 20 miles away. The mechanic put in his computer changed the spark plugs and it never made the sound again. £30 is all he charged I was like the happiest person ever.
@@Pam-h4u I certainly can't say all these ticking sounds are spark plug changes but in my case it was. I'm fairly knowledgeable with engines but I still don't understand how bad spark plugs could make that noise. All I know is when I got there I was expecting it to be worn rocker arms, which would have been a very expensive job, and leaving literally half an hour latter with a beautiful quiet engine.
That could be a lifter not pumping up, broken bearing on a rocker, but it is timing and not a rod not. 1. Low oil 2. Valve. I had similar issue with a Porsche I bought. Mine was due to low oil. I've had it since purchased for about 5 years and it still runs with no problems and no tick sound.
Someone posted low oil XDXD Like they didn't try to fix it... LOL Yeah no.... This can't be the exact thing. I work for Porsche Newport. The consistency and exact noise is WAY too familiar. We had over 2 dozen of this issue due to people not taking care of their cars, or even using the wrong oil, and failing to bring it to maintenance. Rod bearings are gone! At this point, a new engine is about 40% cheaper... The exact reason it is on that yard...
I learned this the hard way but thankfully got lucky everytime I was going the gears there was this loud knocking and banging sound and I had no idea what it was I drove around for 3 days like this I shit you not then I put one liter of oil in the engine and it stopped I couldn't believe it then I googled how bad this is and let's just say I'm surprised I still have an engine I've had no further issues since putting new oil in and there's no dash lights no nothing the VW engine in my seat Ibiza must made from titanium because I don't believe it's steel and survived 3 days of punching itself
VAG cars especially. My VW did this on start all the time and it was so annoying. Toyota has some bullet proof engines from the 80's that do this all the time and sound like sewing machines.
My grand Cherokee with a 4.0 straight six ticked if you didn’t put Lucas oil stabilizer in it. My dad said those engines would sound like sewing machines for 300k and still run perfect
It's the rocker that's making the weird noise, there are 16 of them and they need to be repaired individually depending upon the number of them that has been damaged

Definitely valve train, very consistent timing and loudness, and it’s occurring at roughly the same speed as a camshaft, a knock is more sporadic and varies in loudness as it revs up or is put under load. Probably savable.
I agree it's savable , I was going to say valve tic either needs adjustment or if it's automatic it needs either new (I forget what they are called) adjustment things or the old ones cleaned they hold oil with a ball and get pressurized from the oiling system I believe , either way it can be fixed and cleaned up and would be an awesome vehicle

It's most likely a loose gudgeon pin. Happens due to driving too rough, low oil, and time. It will need a full engine teardown and rebalance. Otherwise, the pin will come loose and shoot out like a bullet, tearing a massive hole in the engine. Which is a hard and expensive task to replace. But finding someone who specialises in engine rebuilds, and one for Porsche's won't come cheap either. But if you buy this cheap enough, refurbish it, you may be able to flip it for a healthy profit.
Its a lifter noise .... usually caused by poor servicing .... pretty straight forward job to rectify .... these are pretty good engines and not too bad to remove and work on.
are they hydraulic lifters? i dont know much about the engine, and videos always make sounds a little higher, but it sounds like a lifter/valve noise. See if you can get the maintenance history. See what it last had done and when at what mileage. Might just need some quickish top end work.
Check the oil first. Low oil can cause ticking as well. If the oil is fine, go from there to find the tick. There are many things that can cause car to tick. Also it’s pretty reliable and will need less repairs than other old cars especially European.
I wouldn't trust that oil is the problem right of the back... But I did think the same thing, however it has been rotting away in a lot for who knows how long
I’d buy instantly!! Everything is in great condition! A ticking is a couple of answers. If it’s something major either rebuild the motor or swap it. The body itself self I can guarantee will be a steal bc of the ticking.
That's a noisy lifter. That usually comes with age, or abuse. The owners likely peeled rubber with it 25 hours per day and didn't do the maintenance it required. This will require a semi-overhaul to fix, but if you drive it like a granny it can last you a few years with that tick. Also, if you let it run for over half an hour that tick might go away. And also, there are oils that can lower the volume of that tick so that you have more bragging rights. Don;t pay full Blue Book on that thing, because of the tick.

The amount of ticks that go away when oil is added is staggering
Always start there.

Definitely valve train, very consistent timing and loudness, and it’s occurring at roughly the same speed as a camshaft, a knock is more sporadic and varies in loudness as it revs up or is put under load. Probably savable.
Interesting I was gunna say new timing chain ⛓️ 🤔 might be a good thing to replace just from a quick tune up perspective 🤔
If it had pressure I was going to say hydraulic lash adjuster.
Modern cars all have knock sensors and would have retarded the living daylights out of the ignition if it was knock
Quality reply. I concur...valvetrain.
Possible noise sources:
- loose plug
- exhaust leak
- noisy injector
- collapsed lifter
- broken valve spring
- low oil level
- oil too long in the engine
- wrong oil
For me the fix was a replace on oil maybe I had something in there
I would also check the timing belt.

Or someone else wants this car bad, at a lower ask, and has wrapped a zip-tie around the drive shaft. tick tick tick.

Check the oil first. Low oil can cause ticking as well. If the oil is fine, go from there to find the tick. There are many things that can cause car to tick. Lack of oil, a rod, etc. My husband was a car mechanic for many many years and he taught me a few things.

@@Record-Makers well of course stuck plastic noise can be consistent with rpm sometimes and sometimes not..

Should I buy another car that is more recent, or is it good to buy an old one and do the necessary?
@@guibzmitrail9522 if you get a good deal on an old Miata it is a very cost effective vehicle to drive. It will require more repairs but it’s relatively cheap to fix and the money you save buying an older cheap car, you will come out ahead even after paying for repairs (compared to a newer much more expensive car). Also it’s pretty reliable and will need less repairs than other old cars especially European.
