      It's Cement RoadBASE Holdings in Ireland. I worked for a subsidiary. They are honestly an azzhole company. Get the customers what they want but understaffed and accidents aren't unusual. Rotten and sometimes corrupt upper management. I saw it in the subsidiary here in Australia, where the national management would HAPPILY burn every other depot around the country to make themselves look good to international headquarters. I made a lot of money there but they treated employees like total crap. Imagine DELIBERATELY running out of work gloves AND soap when using lathes and oily cutting fluid all day, AND in the middle of a pandemic. WHILE having signs up about stopping covid spread by washing your hands. They wasted money on a big flatscreen that basically showed a sideshow of the latest company newsletter, a few thousand bucks for that but NOT $5 for soap.

      We are all screwed if 2 mil is a “risky retirement”. Using the 4% rule, that would generate 80K a year with a low chance of impacting the capital over a 30 year period. Seniors in many countries can access subsidised health care too.
      If they drew down $120K per year to cover 10K a month medical expenses, assuming a 6% investment return and a 3% inflation, that 2 mil would last 24 years.
      He’s currently 89 years old. He probably doesn’t need his money to last another 30 years.

    • @patrickreynolds6270
      @patrickreynolds6270 3 года назад +1

      @@SamConnelly Well, you got a point but I was assuming he has a high standard of living. Just a senior care facility with 24/7 care (bathe, feed, etc) runs 5k a month per person (so 10k total) and you live like a peasant. If you want to hire a RN 24/7, they cost $50/hr, at least here in California, Los Angeles. Having a RN at your mansion 24/7 is going to cost 36,000 per month. A year of that is $432,000. I'm sure he'll be fine but my point was just that medical costs can be insane, especially if you want medical services brought to your home and 24/7 care by professionals instead of family. Of course the rest of us with have to suffer with what we can afford but I have heard of older people blowing through millions in medical expenses during the last few years of their life. It's plausible at least.
      Also when you are old you can't keep your money in stocks due to volatility and short time horizon, so 6% return is out of the question. Most will be cash and short-term bonds.

    • @SamConnelly
      @SamConnelly 3 года назад +81

    Good vid. Some of these billionaires turned from what they knew in business to becoming gamblers at the casino. If you bet on a direction, make sure when you do, you can get out of it if you are wrong to live to fight another day. Don't go into a room that you can't get out of. Betting on a direction of a market that is about to trend or turn is one of the toughest things to do.

      Usually, these persons are extreme psychiatric cases. They go "undetected" because noone dares to have them checked and there is nothing you can do against that if they don't consult by themselves (and by and large they are the last persons on earth to seek mental health, - according to mental health professionals -, because they think themselves as essentially perfect) or are not ordered by a judge to be examined.
      A very well-known absolutely textbook case of narcissistic personality disorder, most likely with sociopathic tendencies, is Donald Trump. Every single psychologist/psychiatrist on the planet knows this, but none is allowed to make a diagnostic without a formal examination and especially to do it publicly. But we have sufficient material for them to be 100% certain of the diagnostic.

      This is a good point. You can’t discount how much more opportunity you have access to in making a business possible when you have connections like this. A random Stanford drop out wouldn’t get the time of day from all the people she did thanks to her family.
      Buffett I think isn’t entirely fair in comparison but definitely has some similarity. Buffett learned a lot from his father about the business from a young age. And his fathers career in investing had a huge impact. Example, Warren invested in his fathers farm at an extremely young age and made a large profit from it. But outside of that he spent years operating as a businessman and making wild decisions about money and investment you’d never see from a kid his age. He had the equivalent of $100K saved by the time he was in college from his choices growing up.
      But where his fathers influence definitely played a role is Warren aligning with Benjamin Hraham. Graham went into business with him because of his clear intelligence but one has to imagine Warren would be laughed out of a building if not for who his father was. But he is also one who demonstrated an immense track record of merit prior to any of this unlike Holmes. He was clearly qualified for the endeavors he entered, it being proven for years at a young age, before he did anything with Graham. Holmes on the other hand was never qualified and never became qualified for any of what she did.
