My guests all seem to prefer the pool temp between 85 and 87. I prefer it to be 87. We use a solar cover and a solar heater that runs through the pool pump.
I’m a Brit and live in the north of Portugal. I have back and joint problems. I can’t get into get water below 30°C/86°F for exactly the reasons you said! I’m also 66. 😂 I have pool cover that keeps up to 5°C from dissipating overnight..which saves on the heating. I have an air heat source pump water and it’s brilliant. Only comes on if the water is below 30°C... and often with the cover saving the heat, and if we’ve left it on in the morning it actually heats the water too , we find the heater doesn’t come on often if at all! Especially in high summer! Thank you for all your help. Now..if only you had a way of getting out the water and not freezing even in hot air! 😂 I know, I need to put a roof and walls on it! Nope can’t do that! ;)
87 degrees is our sweet spot but you're def right about having to stay on top of it. We keep the thermal blanket on it at night, our salt generator at 80% and shock once a week and 2 cap fulls of Leslie's Perfect Weekly also
Here in southeast Texas, there's no way on earth you're going to keep any pool less than 85 degrees from June through September. Just keep the chlorine cranked to keep the nasties down.
Thank You! I never had a pool in the Caribbean and I am finding that shocking it weekly helps. With our pool reaching 90 on its own (no heater) Its a constant fight against allege down here.

If your pool smells strong of Chlorine guess what...it's the Chloramines responding to uric acid in human urine. No one wants to swim in a giant toilet. That usually gets a few volunteers to hop out of the pool to go potty. I generally make all kids go potty before entering and to shower outside messy birthday cake or hot dog ketchup before entering my pool. Also tablet floaters are great for when pool is not in use .
29°C (84.2°F) is my preferred temperature during the UK summer, as it's usually mid 20's air temperature. I loses e or 4 degrees at night even with a solar cover
I live in Phoenix and it's tough to keep it within those "ideal" temps. Blocks of ice help a bit, running the fountain and we hung sail shades above the shallow end.
You must be somewhere in the north US. I'm on the Gulf Coast. It's like having a pool on the surface of the sun. Cooling is a much bigger deal than heating. Summer water can rise to mid and upper 90's, simply by the sun and ambient temperature.
I was wondering what the temp should be. Mine’s between 20 and 25 degrees C so feels a bit chilly. I’d love some way to heat the water from the sun, without connecting it to the pipework of the in ground pool.
78-82 is where I like it. I'll enjoy as low as 70 though. Here in NY it drops quick in late summer, but my pool is direct sunlight and will warm up to 8 degrees in a day.
I think 86 ish is the nicest feeing pool temperature...... here in Michigan it’s windy almost always so if the water is 82 or less it still feels pretty cool.
Do you have an opinion about using heat exchangers that tie into a home's central ac system? I have seen these on some home improvement shows who like their efficiency, but no word from a pool expert's POV.
My pool has full sun and this summer has been very hot. Our pool temp has been up to 94-95 degrees. Is there a method you like cool down a swimming pool?
Do you need to shock every week a 10 foot round Intex pool? its a thousand gallons. i have not set it up yet. also, it came with filter tubes but no pump. Do I need a pump? guess so.
One or both of your thermometers are either not accurate or haven’t been calibrated. To get an accurate reading, you need a very good quality (not cheap) thermometer.
Temperature vary bya few degrees at different locations (and depths) within a pool due to incomplete mixing of the water and shade. Five degrees is an unusually big difference. If the two thermometers give different readings AT THE SAME LOCATION then one of them is clearly defective
@@drdrew3 thank you for this! It makes total sense to me reading it but I’d never come up with that on my own. I’ve been struggling to learn about pools for the past year now & I just realized this is one of the reasons it’s been so difficult for me & why it’s taking so long - I need to find a site that includes info like this that most people/sites probably assume is common sense so it doesn’t need to be said. Unfortunately, not all of us were blessed with common sense 😬
But wasn't there an issue with the effectiveness of chlorine - if the water is too hot.. Could you make a video explaining the perfect parameters for the best effectiveness of organic and unorganic chlorine - with temperature, cyaurinic acid levels and alkalinity.. And then maybe a second one on brome.. would be great!
Within the temperature range for swimming the effect on chlorine, bromine and CYA is negligible. Chlorine is not actually less potent at higher temperature but greatly effected by UV light exposure. The higher chlorine levels needed in summer are needed because algae growth in stimulated. Chlorine is a halogen chemical which is not organic. The active form is hydrochlorous acid regardless of the source
Good point! I actually talk about that in my video about solar pool covers. Here are 3 things you can do: add bags of ice, install a fountain or waterfall, and run your filter system at night. Also don't use a solar cover at night.
Negative to the ice... And I think your book "The Art of Pool Care" even said that it'll take way too much ice to drop the temp. I live in Houston, no solar cover, no heater and it was 90 degrees in the beginning of May. I run the waterfall at night and have cantilever umbrellas providing shade. I think next year I'm installing a heater/cooler because by August it's about 98
Matthew D, I own my own pool cleaning business in Vero Beach Florida. I wanted to let you know that here in Florida you can install a system that both heats and cools your pool. I am sure that if it is available here in Florida, it should also be available in your area of the country. Look at Aqua-Cal pool heat pumps.
Ok before I tell you my optimal pool temperature I want everyone to remember that the body's core temperature is 98.6F. I hate the shock of getting into a cold pool so, if the water is to cold it take forever to slowly get yourself into the pool, letting your body adjust to the cold water, inching your way in ( you all know what I'm talking about). 92F to 94F is the sweet spot.

I have a heater and I am so happy with it. It was 2500 dollars. Well worth the extra money. I get 2-3 more months of comfortable swimming here in Ohio.
My pool heater came with the house. I rarely use ot her in south Florida. I just don't use the pool Dec through March. If i have guest i heat the pool up. It takes two days in the cooler weather.
