High Blood Sugars in the Morning? How to Treat High Blood Sugars!

  • In this video, Diana Bytyqi, DNP, FNP-C explains the reasons why blood are elevated in the morning. There are times that blood sugars are high in the morning as a result of diet and lack of exercise. However, there are other causes, such as, the liver "over working" during the night and also the SOMOGYI effect.
    The Somogyi effect occurs when there is a low blood sugar level around 3-4 am followed by a rise in blood sugar level in the early hours of awakening.
    We often treat morning high blood sugar levels by altering the diet or adjusting medications, accordingly.

    Seems like I was in the same boat with some of your responders. My fasting glucose was consistently above 100. For years I was addicted to sweets…still am. I used to wake up in the middle of the night with a strong craving. Donuts, cookies, peanut butter and jelly on Ritz crackers, etc. I was also told I had metabolic syndrome. I was scared with the recent diagnosis of 60 to 70 percent blockage of my coronary artery. I am 71 years old and I weighed 180 lbs in March. So I went cold Turkey and cut out all sweets, potatoes, bread, pasta, sugar and anything with high carbs. I’m a good cook so I prepare meals high in fat, and protein. I also eat green vegetables and for the first time avocados.
    My fasting sugar has come down 10 pts and I lost ten pounds since March. Being only human it’s a challenge going to special occasions where I go off the wagon. But I think I can stay with this life style for the long haul. I look forward to loosing another ten lbs. Bust of all I no longer wake up with those nasty sugar cravings!

    This describes me to a T. I look forward to learning how this is treated for Type 1s. I never know I had this going on until I got a CGM; I highly recommend all diabetics get one to monitor their sugars, especially in the AM. Suggestion, you should do a video (s) comparing the CGMs on the market and their pros/cons.

    • @thevoiceofdiabetes
      @thevoiceofdiabetes  3 года назад +3

      Thanks for the feedback, Steven! I will definitely have a video on the CGM's. They are the greatest invention we have, so far, for diabetes. It's amazing how much it has changed both patient lives and our lives as providers. Being able to catch things we couldn't before and target better care has been amazing. I went to a conference in Barcelona.... There are more advanced sensors being worked on as we speak.... it's so exciting.... I remain optimistic that treating diabetes will continue to get better and easier and more convenient. Thanks to science and all the knowledge we have today regarding this disease.

    This really helped me understand the “dawn effect “. I eat carnivore and do 36 hour fasts three days a week, and eat 2 meals on eating days though never in the morning yet I still have that spike every single morning. Maybe I should switch to a breakfast and a late lunch so my body has more time to adjust. Anyway, ty so much for the education!

      I've been a year on keto, mostly carnivore now, & my blood glucose levels are great, mostly 85-115 even after a meal, but I experience the dawn effect. Take this morning: went for a 11 mile bike ride at 3:30, fasting for 12 hours I took my BG and it was 90, 4 hours later fasting 16 hours it went UP to 97, 2 hours later though it had dropped down to 88. I guess that's just my "normal" but my BG never spikes anywhere near to be considered high.

    I hardly know anyone who doesn't have issues with Metformin. It has a bad reputation amongst the diabetics I know. Also, it can be very hard on the kidneys and the stomach. Most doctors I come across seem to be more concerned with treating the symptoms rather than the cause and try curing the patients. It's so frustrating. It's like the Statin drug epidemic. A drug that eliminates less than 1% of strokes and heart attacks and yet is still very over-prescribed. Try finding a doctor who doesn't get pissed when you simply bring things up because you care what goes into your body and are concerned about your own health.
