Honestly, I just did as you suggest, and listened to Fantasia Barrino's version and it's great, but it is too shrill for the mood it was written for. She does a fantastic job, but let's not argue. I met Michel Legrand and listened to him play this song live. It was written in the 60s and it requires this type of delivery. This is a better rendition in my opinion.
