In the span of 10 seconds, you got more rings on that plastic spike than I ever did throughout my childhood every time I would go to my friend's house. For some reason, this impresses me as a 30 year old adult.
Lazy Game Reviews I'd love that! They were useless, but still so cool to have because there's no way most people could just afford a cell phone back then and at that age.

***** I assume the statement implies that the OP was young, when you consider that the mother took the toy away. If they were old enough to drink underage, the mother would likely either make them clean it out, as well as any other fluids caused by drunken activities rather than take a toy away.
I've got the Pac Man variation of this game Tomy released int he early '80s. Unfortunately it's completely useless now as the rubber cork to keep the water in has dried out and rotted. It crumbled apart when I tried to get it out :(
Larry, source a new bung or cork from somewhere....otherwise there is you could fabricate something out of resin and a custom mold, but knowing you, you never could be arsed to do the latter. The one I had, had one of those water pistol style corks in it, I expect it is still in the land of the living, even though it is probably at the bottom of some stinking landfill!
Does anyone also remember the McDonalds variants of this in the 1980s? There was a Mcdonalds commercial for it even way back then! all four variants are as far as I can remember: Ronald, Birdie, Hamburglar and Grimace!
They must have acquired the Pac Man license later on, because that game already existed in the original 1976 line. It must have just looked so much like Pac Man or people referred to it as Pac Man, that following the popularity of the game it seemed like the right move.
Me also, plus an 'Erudite' word game, lotto with small wooden barrels, a Soviet clone of 'Monopoly' called 'Empire', a pantograph, coloring books, sticky gun, sticky tennis paddles, ping-pong launcher cones.
joey4track Impressive how many people say they played with these at the dentist. All my dentist had were those weird thing with the shapes you could move around on twisty metal rods.
It's funny how many variations of this concept there were.... Heck, I remember a really odd one I had when I was a kid.... So get this, there was a Sonic the Hedgehog shampoo (or was it conditioner? I can't 100% remember) That had one of these things built into the bottle. I kid you not. It's really odd looking back on it. I think it also had two buttons instead of just the one like on the actual Waterful Ring Toss.
Oh my god, I had the exact same variation!! I remember keeping my bottle of Sonic as a regular in my line-up of bath toys. Kept that thing around for awhile... I'm pretty sure I had other variations as well growing up... But the Sonic one is the one I remember most clearly. C:
I completely forgot about these toys until I saw the video. I think I had the same one shown in the video and a variant like that shampoo/bubble bath bottle thing!
I'm really enjoying this videos where you don't look at games or hardware. It's something so new and refreshing, makes me wonder what will you cover next.
Found your channel about a week ago, and gotta love that script, and the use of words/delivery you got going. Awesome stuff man! :D PS. I got Ring Toss as a child too.
Once I had such Waterful games by Tomy. Loved them!! It was back in 1981, 1982 or so when I was 13 years old. No batteries were required, no electrical current, just water! Brilliant. I've purchsed simular games now for my two year old daughter! Thanks for posting this video!
This is why you are my favourite youtuber, you're not afraid of uploading random stuff and being extremely entertaining while speaking about a 39 year old toy that almost everyone had at some point.
I remember my grandmother got me one of these in the '90s when I was little and haven't seen one in action since then. I always thought aliens made that game possible until I saw you take that apart but now I know it's magic. Wow.
I was born the year these came out. Several years back, I'd get the fuzzy memory of owning at least 2 of these at different times. I believe the first was probably in the early '80's and maybe toward the mid-80's with the second. They didn't stick around for long and I don't remember why. I was able to find one doing a Google search. And I just bought one for the sake of nostalgia and for showing to the other children in my family. Your review is spot-on. For some reason, I thought they'd be a little smaller than I remembered them. But that's because I was making an adjustment for being a tiny child with tiny hands the last time I held one. They're actually a pretty good-sized toy and I should give my memory a little more credit. LOL When I ordered the Waterful, I also ordered a bag of 36 of those colorful plastic bird water whistles after they popped into my head. I also have a vague memory of owning one of those for a brief period of time when I was between 6 and 8. For $6 total, I thought I'd keep one for myself and give the rest to the young ones in the family. But it seems that half of them don't work. LOL I believe there are burrs and other imperfections around the fipples that I may try to fix with a box cutter. I went on another nostalgic binge a couple years back and bought a couple of electronic pinball machines, as well as the Entex Baseball 3 handheld game, as well as the Mattel Basketball and Football 2 handheld games, all of which we once owned. It's amazing how we change as we get older. Of course, these are all bought for historical purposes and will be mostly preserved instead of being played vigorously until broken. But in many ways, it seems that most of us do tend to revert back to our own childhoods in some ways. I mean...I would not have been caught dead buying these back when I was 20. LOL
LGR is confirmed for the more laid back channel ever. Really man, i love your videos: the jazzy music, the laid back attitude and the nostalgic nature of it all... Man it's so hard to describe it.
So I'm just about 10 years younger than you and remember having a toy like this. It had three poles inside and was shaped roughly like a Gameboy. It was awesome. Thanks for this video!
I had one of these as a kid it worked until my little brother took it apart. Like you LGR my brother would take stuff apart but would fail in putting it back together.
Had the same reaction when I saw this video. Suddenly remembered having one of these when I was very young, but never really thought of it again until seeing the thumbnail.
I had that exact ring toss game growing up and wish I still had it. I used to play it all the time and took it on car trips to pass the time. It would do wonders for stress relief now haha
I had one of those too! wow. The lost cap thing is what really jogged my memory. Maximum nostalgia! This also reminded me of a head-to-head early 80's water board (water board, not waterboard) game we (brother and I) got for Christmas one year. It was called *Quicksilver* (or some odd spelling that sounded that). have you ever seen one of those? The enclosed in clear plastic relatively horizontal "board" was angled up to a ridge in the middle with some obstacle, and the entire thing inside was covered in some type of water resistant material (wax, or something.. doubt it was hydrophobic ). Each player had a water gun you could aim, and the goal was the drown the other side (once the water got so high, the gun stopped working iirc). The water looked like mercury on the board.
omg!! I was so obsessed with this toy as a kid and I too completely forgot about it. This definitely instilled a love of playing with water that is still with me today. Thanks for reminding me of a nostalgic delight.
That was a waterful review Clint. The sounds of watery flatulence at your fingertips, really brings back memories. Yep, they don't build 'em like they used to.
LGR, you can make a video about anything, and it's BJ guaranteed, I never commented on your videos, but I've been watching you for years, and I gotta say you da classiest and swaggest reviewin dawg. For fucksake this thang? Yet, it's still a class-say video and still a video you drink your red-wine, or black coffee to while receiving a BJ. All thanks to your invincible charisma.
Oh my! I used to have one like this, except some generic tiny handheld one, and I totally forgot about it. and i'm not one to forget. You just made that part of my brain bolt awake too!
Never had one of these, but I remember a small toy shop in Germany in the late 80's that was filled with Tomy toys, including the waterfuls and robots. That store was amazing!
I'm 3 years late to this one. But that line, "Just as I suspected, magic" made me laugh so freaking hard. Thanks for the many hours of amazing content LGR.
That's a leftover from RUclips's old "shows" system, where they had uploaders provide US TV-standard content ratings for each video added to a show page. It is long since obsolete.
Not to be a douche or anything, but that got me thinking hmm... "Partner rating: No mature content" _must_ be implying there is only immature content. J/K. ^_^' Cool video, and game/toy though.
How nostalgic, I had that game too, plus a couple others, including one that you make a pyramid with a bunch of triangles, and a tic tac toe like game. Thanks for sharing your memories of it.
Oh. My. God. Serious nostalgia trip. My dad used to have one of these me and my sisters played with. Probably never would have thought of it again in my life if not for this video. Thank You
I had no idea these were from way back in 76'. I was born in 84 and I had one to! Must of been a hand me down from my older brother. Love your style LGR
I had this model growing up, I absolutely loved it. there was no frustration like the feeling of filling the spike and then the water jet pushing the rings off.
Yep. Fondly remember playing with one of these at my grandmother's house, same base and big button, albeit I think it involved stacking triangles on a platform. Kind of like analog moonlander. Ah, what an amazing time to be alive.
I had several of these, and for what they were, they were good clean 'healthy' fun. Tomy did a number of variants over the years, including the smaller "tube" versions, and more deluxe versions, of this size, but with various different "button" mechanisms. My original was "Crabby Claws", where the aim was to get gently floating balls through the mouth of a crab. The jets of air would move his pivoted claws, which helped/hindered the balls. I recall having a second one involving translucent coloured shapes that again had to be aimed at some sort of target, and possibly a third that involved getting hoops onto a dolphin's 'nose'. I still have at least two of these, with box, my parents attic, but sadly time has not been kind to the materials. When I found 'Crabby Claws' a couple of years back, the rubber bung had eroded and ripped off, still stuck in hole. Nice items, though.
They had a couple of these in the aftercare room at my school in kindergarten and first grade! I had totally forgotten about them until stumbling upon this video.
You know, the fact that you're able to talk about such a simple toy for 5 minutes without repeating any of your points says a lot for your ability to write a good script.
Oh man, I remember having one of these when I was a kid. You certainly got the car trip thing right. We moved around a lot when I was younger and this was one of many things I tinkered with while sitting for many hours in the car.
I LOVE these. My grandmother had a few in her house when we were kids and I literally spent a month hunting them down online one time trying to figure out what this amazing game was!
I loved them. Back in 1991 especially, many restaurants had them for kids (like me) to play. They came in all variety. The retro guy in me would like to collect them again.
Wow, jut randomly came across this and it brought back so much memory I used to be really hooked on this, and managed to do weird things, like stacking them by color, or alternating colors with specific sequence, very challenging and satisfying
Holy crap. I forgot these things existed. Your reaction you described at the beginning of this video is exactly what this video did to me. Wow. I can't remember what one I had, but I definitely had at least one or two of these things. I think I had a really small one, and then also a big one similar to yours in the video.
I had a couple of these things as a kid, if I remember correctly they made several different types of these with different pieces and catching mechanisms (I remember one of them having something like fish in it, and instead of ring poles it had a little plastic "basket" thing). Oh, I just got to the part where you mentioned that. For me, these things are so much more than what face value suggests. As simplistic as they are, I remember as a kid getting absurd amounts of enjoyment out of them. It's brilliant that these things were refillable, so if any water leaked out it was easily remedied (something tells me that a 2017 version of this would be completely sealed in a way that would render it useless if that seal was broken). The feel of the button was almost magical, and in about 2 seconds you realize that you can control the height, speed, and chaos of the pieces inside. Sometimes I'd give it gentle presses, hoping to catch my pieces and other times I'd just mash that button as hard as I could, repeatedly, just to see the chaos ensue. These things, as aggravating as they can be, had a weird calming effect on me, the subtle motions of the water and the pieces inside had a way of just transfixing my brain. It's almost like a stress reliever, just gently pushing the button and watching the pieces gently float around. I did that a lot when I had them. It's funny to hear you talk about seeing it in the thrift store. That was basically my reaction when I saw the thumbnail to this video. "Oh yeah! Those things were awesome!" I had long forgotten them, but instantly remembered at the sight of it.
I'm four years your junior, Clint, and I had a Tomy Sonic the Hedgehog one. It was essentially the same thing but with a Green Hill Zone theme. Awesome video as usual.
To this day my brother still has is. I dont think the water has been changed in about 20 years but the button still works and the game is fun. It's great watching my nieces play it
I bought one of those football (soccer) variations of this on a school trip in Germany ten or so years back. Never really played it much, but I still have it!
1:14 As I remember from my childhood, the instructions that came with this game told you to fill it with boiled water (cooled down to room temp of course).
Wow, that's pure nostalgia, not only because you're talking about something you don't usually do but because that's a niche toy that some specific generations remember like the one I belong. My cousins and friends had one of these and I always wished to have one.
Wow, i remember them as you said in the beginning. It seems there was a time in the 80s where every fifth kid had one. And that was in west Germany, so somehow this things even made their way to us in mass
Glad you covered the original before the DLC came out!
Daahhhhhh! The DLC was much better, it added more rings
waterful was really the dark souls of water games

The whole console is water resistant tho. Big plus.

Frame rate seems too low though.

i remember my grandparents having one of these when i was like 3 or 4. that was like the only thing i would play with.
I HAD THIS
Wow so many memories now
I'm 3 years late to this one. But that line, "Just as I suspected, magic" made me laugh so freaking hard. Thanks for the many hours of amazing content LGR.
Why does this video specify it doesn't have any mature content?
That's a leftover from RUclips's old "shows" system, where they had uploaders provide US TV-standard content ratings for each video added to a show page. It is long since obsolete.
Not to be a douche or anything, but that got me thinking hmm... "Partner rating: No mature content" _must_ be implying there is only immature content. J/K. ^_^' Cool video, and game/toy though.
Fart jokes.
I had one of these! Didn’t think mine was that old but holy cow! One of those flashback moments when I saw your thumbnail.
Your not real gamer if you haven't beaten one of these.
Jupp, I too remember that thing. A cousin of mine had one of those.
Someone please make an app of this game :D
How nostalgic, I had that game too, plus a couple others, including one that you make a pyramid with a bunch of triangles, and a tic tac toe like game. Thanks for sharing your memories of it.
Nostalgia is running through me! I had the little portable ones you got in your McDonald's kids meal. I'M LOVIN' IT!!!
Oh. My.
Ohlaird, I had one of these. This and this bubble-blowing teaset I had as a six year old were my life for a long time. Thanks for reminding me!
Never thought you could make a video on an old ring toss toy so entertaining. Well done!
“Childhood is strange...” what a beautiful opening! “Strange conversations” indeed.
Ah! My first handheld. Nice!
I was a mid 90s kid but I had one of these from 1977 (yellow with a dolphin inside, I've still got it on my shelf of childhood things)
It really is amazing how these things LASTED
Dude I totally remember this game back in the day this game was fun when I was a little kid
:OOOO I had one of these! I totally forgot about this toy until now! I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!
"Ah yes, just as I suspected. Magic." had me cracking up for no good reason.
Wow, jut randomly came across this and it brought back so much memory
I used to be really hooked on this, and managed to do weird things, like stacking them by color, or alternating colors with specific sequence, very challenging and satisfying
I used to have one of those when I was a kid, in fact I may still have it I'm ditching my pc for this masterpiece.
Ohhh Clint...the nostalgia. I played this so much when I was a kid. Great to see again after all these years
Wow, i remember them as you said in the beginning. It seems there was a time in the 80s where every fifth kid had one. And that was in west Germany, so somehow this things even made their way to us in mass
That old picture of you had me in tears. You look sooooo much like your father! And those glasses! Wow! I love you Clint, I freakin' love you.
